A dependable podcast workflow moves in one direction: plan the episode, prepare and test your recording setup, record, protect and edit the audio, publish through a host or destination, submit the show to listening platforms, and verify the release. The tools can vary; the important choice is whether a podcast host maintains your RSS feed or you publish directly to a platform such as Spotify for Creators.
1. Plan the episode before you record
Decide what the episode is about, who it is for, its format, who will take part, and when it should be released. Draft the title and description before upload. Having the basic episode information ready keeps publishing from becoming a last-minute scramble.

- Set a target release date and prepare the title and description.
2. Prepare the microphone, room, and recording levels
Choose the input and monitoring setup
Use a quiet room and reduce echo where practical. In Audacity, choose the microphone under Recording device and headphones under Playback device. A USB microphone connects directly to a computer; an XLR microphone needs an audio interface. Headphones help keep speaker playback from bleeding into the microphone.
For one speaker using one microphone, record a mono voice track. Audacity recommends that normal speech peaks fall between −18 dB and −6 dB, leaving headroom below clipping. These are Audacity’s recording-level recommendations, not a required level for every recording application.

Make a test before the full take
Speak at your usual volume for a short test and listen back. Check that the intended microphone is recording, the headphones work, the room is acceptably quiet, and the peaks are not clipping. A few seconds of room silence can also help if you later need to reduce steady background noise. Preventing clipping and room problems is safer than assuming editing can repair them.
3. Record and check the take
Once the test sounds right, record the episode. Listen to the take before moving on, checking for missing audio, distracting noise or echo, clipped peaks, and sections that need another take. Fix an input or room problem at the source when possible rather than relying on editing to conceal it.

4. Save the project, make a safety copy, and edit
Protect the original recording
Keep the editable project as well as a separate audio export. Audacity’s recording manual recommends making a WAV or AIFF safety export immediately after recording and before editing. Its getting-started guide also covers saving a project and exporting audio.
Make an editorial quality-control pass
In the edit, remove clear mistakes and long dead air, check transitions and levels, and listen to the exported file from beginning to end. Confirm that the export is the intended episode and plays correctly before uploading it. The appropriate editing steps depend on the recording; the workflow sources do not establish a universal loudness target for every podcast.

5. Choose where publishing and feed management happen
RSS-hosted workflow
In an RSS workflow, upload and manage the episode through the podcast hosting provider. The host maintains the feed that directories use to receive show and episode updates. Apple says an episode created from an RSS feed cannot be updated in Apple Podcasts Connect; make changes through the third-party host instead.
Apple requires an episode title and enclosure tags. It recommends tags for episode type, episode number, and release date. New shows submitted to Apple must pass technical validation and review before becoming available.

Direct Spotify for Creators workflow
Riverside documents a separate direct-to-Spotify route: an edited export opens in Spotify for Creators as a draft, where the creator enters episode details and chooses whether to publish or schedule it. That is a destination-specific handoff, not the same workflow as relying on an RSS host to distribute the episode.

6. Submit the show and verify each release
- Prepare the feed or destination draft. For an RSS-hosted show, upload the episode and check its title and enclosure information at the host. For Riverside’s direct Spotify workflow, open the edited export in Spotify for Creators and complete the episode details.
- Submit or connect listening platforms. Submit the RSS feed to the platforms you want to reach, or use the distribution connections available from your host. A new Apple show must pass technical validation and review.
- Publish or schedule the episode. Confirm the intended release timing in the host or destination workflow. A scheduled host release should appear in the RSS feed at the scheduled time, according to Riverside’s documentation.
- Check the result. After the first release and subsequent scheduled releases, open the listing on each intended platform. Confirm the episode appears with the right title and details and that playback works.
Common workflow problems and fixes
- The wrong microphone or no microphone is recorded: check the selected Recording device in Audacity or the recording app, then make and play back another short test.
- Speaker audio or feedback is audible: select headphones for playback and wear them while monitoring instead of playing audio through speakers.
- The recording sounds clipped: lower the recording level and test again at normal speaking volume; do not assume editing can restore clipped audio.
- The voice sounds echoey or noisy: reduce avoidable room noise and reflections, then record a new test. A short room-silence segment may help with steady noise reduction, but it does not replace a suitable recording environment.
- An RSS episode’s details need correction: update the episode through the third-party host. Apple says RSS-created episodes cannot be updated in Apple Podcasts Connect.
- A new Apple show is not available yet: allow for Apple’s technical validation and review process, then check the submission status and correct any issues identified there.
- An episode is missing from a directory: verify that the feed or destination was submitted or connected, that the release occurred, and that the episode appears correctly at the source before investigating the directory listing.
