You can build a small headless home-network server around a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W by installing Raspberry Pi OS Lite, configuring Wi-Fi and SSH before first boot, and connecting the board to a suitable power supply. This guide targets the Zero 2 W specifically; the original Zero and Zero W are different models, so do not assume their hardware or connectivity is the same.
What this Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W build does—and does not establish
The Zero 2 W has 512 MB of memory, 2.4 GHz single-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.2 BLE, according to Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation. It has no built-in Ethernet port and does not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Its compact, low-power-oriented design makes it a candidate for lightweight network services, but those specifications alone do not establish how well a particular application will perform.

This build gets the board booted, connected to your home network, and accessible remotely. It does not establish an exact wall-power draw, annual electricity cost, file-sharing speed, media-server capability, storage-endurance recommendation, or tested backup method. Check the current requirements and guidance for any service you later install rather than inferring performance from the board specifications.

Gather the board and essential parts
- Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W: the model used in this walkthrough.
- microSD card: Raspberry Pi identifies microSD as the typical boot medium on most models. Choose a card appropriate to your intended use; the cited Raspberry Pi setup guidance does not specify a storage endurance class.
- Power supply: Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 2.5 A supply for Zero models. This is the supply rating, not a measurement of what the server consumes.
- Network connection: use the board’s 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, or add a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter for wired networking.
A wired adapter occupies the board’s USB connection and has its own connection and power requirements. Add a powered USB hub only if the adapter or other peripherals need more ports or power than your setup provides; it is not automatically required.

Install Raspberry Pi OS Lite and configure headless access
A headless Raspberry Pi runs without a monitor, keyboard, or graphical desktop attached. Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite for a headless device and Raspberry Pi Imager for preparing it. Imager can install the operating system and configure the hostname, user credentials, wireless-network details, and remote access before the first boot. For a command-line server, SSH is a straightforward remote-administration choice. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guide for current setup instructions.
- Install and open Raspberry Pi Imager. Insert the microSD card in your computer and select the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, Raspberry Pi OS Lite, and the microSD card as the destination. Confirm the destination carefully before writing, because the card will be overwritten.
- Set the first-boot options. In Imager’s customization settings, choose a hostname, create the user credentials, and enter the details for your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Enable SSH and select an authentication method. You can also choose Raspberry Pi Connect if you prefer that remote-access route, but this guide uses SSH.
- Write the card and let Imager finish. Eject the card safely after the write completes, then insert it into the Zero 2 W.
- Connect power to the correct port. Use the port labelled POWER IN or PWR for the recommended 5 V, 2.5 A supply. The board’s other USB port is for peripherals; it is not the power-input port.
- Allow the first boot to complete. The board should join Wi-Fi using the credentials saved in Imager. The time it takes can vary; do not assume the server is ready the instant power is connected.
Connect over SSH and check that the board is reachable
From another device on the same home network, connect using the hostname configured in Imager and the username you created. For example, if you chose homeserver as the hostname and alex as the username, try:

Some networks or client devices may not resolve the .local name. In that case, find the Raspberry Pi’s assigned address in your router’s connected-device list and connect with ssh alex@IP_ADDRESS, replacing IP_ADDRESS with the address shown there. On the first connection, verify the host-key prompt before accepting it; enter the password or use the authentication method configured in Imager.

- If SSH refuses the connection: confirm the Pi has finished booting, that the client is on the same network, and that SSH was enabled in Imager.
- If Wi-Fi does not connect: recheck the saved network name and password, and confirm the network offers 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The Zero 2 W is single-band 2.4 GHz, not 5 GHz.
- If using wired Ethernet: check that the USB-to-Ethernet adapter is compatible and has an adequate connection and power arrangement.
Choose a service only after confirming its requirements
Once remote access works, the board is ready for further configuration, but the setup itself does not prove suitability for every server workload. Before adding DNS filtering, file sharing, media serving, or another service, consult that software’s current installation documentation for its supported operating systems, memory needs, network configuration, storage assumptions, and backup guidance. No workload-specific benchmark or complete-build power measurement is established by the cited Raspberry Pi documentation.
