A phone’s wallpaper preview may crop an image to fill the display; adding canvas preserves the original, while stretching it to fit distorts it.
Why phone wallpapers crop photos
A photo and a phone screen often have different aspect ratios—the relationship between their width and height. A landscape photo is much wider relative to its height than a tall phone display. When wallpaper settings enlarge the photo to cover the screen, parts of its edges can fall outside the visible area. Moving or zooming the photo changes which parts are visible, but cannot show the entire image while also filling a differently shaped screen edge to edge.

There are three possible outcomes: crop the photo to fill the display, preserve the whole photo with added canvas that may show as margins or a background, or stretch the photo and distort its proportions. For an undistorted image with all its original edges visible, use added canvas.

- Open the photo in an editor with a canvas-size, border, or background feature. You do not need a paid editor if an app you already have can add space around an image.
- Create a portrait canvas with proportions suited to the phone’s wallpaper preview. If the photo is shorter or wider than the canvas, scale it down until all its edges fit; do not crop it.
- Choose how to fill the extra space. Use a solid color, a soft or blurred background, or another deliberate design. The added area—not the original photo—fills the parts of the screen the photo does not cover.
- Position the photo and save it as a new copy. Keeping the original untouched makes it easy to start over or use the photo elsewhere.
- Select the new copy in the phone’s wallpaper settings and inspect the preview. Reposition it if needed. The phone may still apply a small crop or movement effect, so confirm that the important edges remain visible before applying.
This canvas-and-border method is also described in a practical guide for iOS 17; those instructions are version-specific, so treat it as a general workaround rather than a guarantee about every iOS release. Clouds Press’ iOS 17 guide explains the distinction: cropping to the wallpaper ratio fills the screen but removes content outside the crop, while adding the photo to a taller canvas can preserve it.

Set the prepared image as wallpaper
On iPhone
Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos, choose the prepared image, then tap Add. Apple documents the option to use it as a wallpaper pair or choose Customize Home Screen for a separate Home Screen treatment. The Home Screen can use a selected photo, color, or blur. Menu wording may vary by iOS version, and Apple’s guide does not describe a universal switch that shows every edge of any photo. See Apple’s iPhone wallpaper instructions.
On Samsung Galaxy
Open the wallpaper customization flow, choose the image from Gallery, drag to reposition it, and pinch to zoom before applying. Samsung says its normal wallpaper flow crops the picture to fit the screen and recommends not cropping it beforehand. That advice suits an edge-to-edge wallpaper; if the whole original photo must remain visible, prepare a canvas first. On Google Pixel
Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen, then go to Wallpapers & style > More wallpapers > Change wallpaper > Choose a photo. Select Lock screen or Home screen and apply the image. Google lists optional visual effects for some models—Cinematic effects on Pixel 6 and later, and shape or weather effects on Pixel 9a and later. These are not a general no-crop control. Choose between preserving the photo and filling the screen

If edge-to-edge coverage matters more than retaining every detail, use the wallpaper preview to position the subject and accept some cropping. A centered subject with extra space around it is less likely to lose important content. On Galaxy phones, the preview supports dragging and pinch-zooming; the available controls differ by device.

What to do if the wallpaper still looks zoomed in
- Check the prepared file itself. Confirm the canvas includes the full original photo and was saved as a new copy. If the editor cropped the image or stretched it, remake the canvas from the original.
- Inspect the phone’s preview before applying. If the image appears enlarged, reduce the zoom or reposition it where those controls are available. A preview can reveal whether the system is trimming the added background or the photo itself.
- Consider motion or visual effects. A wallpaper may shift or use an optional effect. Turn off effects or movement if the phone offers that choice and the framing changes, then check the preview again.
- Set each screen deliberately. iPhone offers a paired wallpaper or a separately customized Home Screen; Pixel lets you choose Lock screen or Home screen. Check the screen you actually want to change.
What size should the wallpaper image be?
There is no universal pixel resolution established for all phone models in the official setup guides linked above. Screen proportions, preview behavior, and software vary. For edge-to-edge framing, a canvas with proportions close to the target phone’s display can help, but matching the shape alone cannot preserve every edge of a differently shaped photo; that requires extra canvas. Check the exact phone model’s display specifications and use its wallpaper preview rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all resolution.
