AWS Elemental Link is a physical contribution device: it sends a camera or production feed into AWS Elemental MediaLive, which ingests and transcodes it. Link is one input in a larger platform, not a complete viewer-facing streaming service. Plan the destination, packaging or origin, content delivery network (CDN), and playback experience as well as the input. AWS also documents network-input paths, so Link is optional when another supported input better fits your production.
What AWS Elemental Link does in a streaming platform
Link connects an on-premises camera or production source to MediaLive over an AWS-managed secure connection. MediaLive receives that contribution feed and transcodes it into the outputs configured for the channel. The viewer-facing service comes from the rest of the workflow: commonly an origin or packager, a CDN, and a website, app, or other playback experience.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
In practical terms, the path is:
- Production source: camera or other production equipment creates the feed.
- Contribution input: Elemental Link carries the feed to MediaLive. For a Link UHD workflow, AWS also documents use with MediaConnect.
- Encoding: MediaLive ingests the input and transcodes it according to the channel configuration.
- Packaging and origin: a service such as MediaPackage can expose packaged playback formats, or an S3-based design can host HLS segments.
- Delivery and playback: CloudFront or another planned delivery path distributes the stream to a player on a website, app, or device.
Do not treat purchasing or configuring Link as the whole platform: without a configured MediaLive workflow and a usable output and playback path, viewers do not have a finished service.

Plan the viewer experience before creating the channel
Start at the audience end and work backward. Decide how viewers will watch, what playback endpoint the player will use, and whether the design needs a packaging/origin service and a CDN. Then choose the input and encoding workflow that can supply that destination. AWS recommends preparing upstream and downstream systems before channel creation rather than choosing channel settings in isolation.

Write down the output requirements
- Playback formats: determine which formats the player or distribution plan needs. AWS’s Live Streaming reference pattern uses MediaPackage to package adaptive-bitrate output for HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints.
- Hosting and delivery: an AWS S3 reference pattern instead sends MediaLive’s adaptive-bitrate HLS output to S3 and distributes the segments through CloudFront.
- Media characteristics: identify the source’s video and audio characteristics, captions, codecs, and the output requirements before configuring the channel. The appropriate settings depend on the actual source and destination; the available evidence does not prescribe universal codec or bitrate values.
- Resilience: decide whether the event needs redundant source feeds. AWS’s Live Streaming reference architecture uses two input feeds, but that is a reference design choice, not a requirement for every deployment.
- Region: confirm that the selected AWS Region supports the services, device workflow, and solution you plan to use. If the design uses MediaConnect flows, the deployment guide requires the deployment to use their Region.
Choose Link or another input path
Use Link when the production setup calls for a physical contribution device feeding MediaLive. It can be a fit when the source is on premises and the production workflow benefits from a dedicated device-to-cloud contribution path. The device must be deployed and configured for the intended MediaLive workflow; it does not remove the need to plan the channel and downstream services.
Link is not mandatory in every AWS live-streaming build. AWS’s S3 reference design also lists RTP, RTMP, and HLS input paths. Choose among these based on the source you actually have, the venue network, and the workflow requirements. Before committing to hardware or an architecture, check the current device status, setup conditions, and availability in your Region; these can change.

Build the AWS workflow step by step
The steps below describe the architecture decisions and build sequence. Exact console labels, settings, and prerequisites can vary with the current AWS service and solution versions, so use the current AWS instructions for the specific device and deployment rather than relying on guessed menu paths.
- Choose a playback and delivery design. Decide whether your downstream path will use MediaPackage for HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints, or an S3-hosted HLS path distributed with CloudFront. Define where the player will obtain its playback endpoint.
- Prepare the production source and input. Confirm the camera or production feed, venue network, and input type. If using Elemental Link, deploy and configure the device for the MediaLive workflow. If using another supported input path, verify that it matches the source and planned design.
- Create the MediaLive input and channel for the planned workflow. Configure the input to match the selected source, then configure the channel to ingest and transcode it for the chosen downstream destinations. Set audio, video, captions, codecs, and outputs to the real source and playback requirements; do not select values solely because they appear in a generic example.
- Configure packaging or hosting and delivery. For the MediaPackage pattern, connect the MediaLive adaptive-bitrate outputs to the planned packaging endpoints. For the S3 pattern, configure the HLS segment destination in S3 and CloudFront distribution. Ensure the player is pointed at the intended playback endpoint.
- Deploy in the intended Region and check dependencies. Confirm that every service and any provided solution template is available in the chosen Region. If using MediaConnect flows, follow the Region condition in the deployment guidance. Review current template prerequisites before deployment.
- Validate the full path before the event. Test from source through MediaLive and the selected packaging or hosting and delivery path to the actual player. Check that the intended audio, video, captions, and playback behavior arrive at the audience endpoint. Test redundant feeds if the design includes them.
Choose between the two AWS reference patterns
| Design choice | MediaPackage pattern | S3 and CloudFront pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding and output | MediaLive creates adaptive-bitrate outputs; MediaPackage packages them for HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints. | MediaLive creates adaptive-bitrate HLS output and sends encoded segments to S3. |
| Delivery path | Packaged endpoints feed the planned playback and delivery setup. | CloudFront distributes HLS segments hosted in S3. |
| Input options | Depends on the chosen MediaLive workflow and source. | The reference design lists RTP, RTMP, HLS, and Link input paths; Link is optional. |
| Best starting question | Do the player and distribution requirements call for the documented MediaPackage formats? | Does an S3-hosted HLS path fit the intended playback and delivery design? |
These are reference patterns, not a claim that one is universally cheaper or better. Choose based on player format needs, source and venue fit, redundancy requirements, Region availability, and the services the team can operate.

Use the AWS CloudFormation solution carefully
AWS provides a CloudFormation-based live-streaming solution with three progressive 30 fps encoding profile choices: HD-1080p, HD-720p, and SD-540p. The guide estimates deployment at approximately 20 minutes. Treat that as an estimate for the template, not a guarantee for a production project: preparation, permissions, regional availability, configuration choices, and validation can add work. Review the current template, prerequisites, and service availability before launch.
Estimate costs for the actual audience and workflow
There is no single platform cost for an Elemental Link build. Cost depends on the encoding configuration and duration, packaging and other selected services, and the volume of viewer delivery. Use current regional prices and model the actual output bitrate, viewing hours, and audience traffic before committing.

AWS’s guide gives an illustrative estimate of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour SD-540p event with about 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia): approximately $2.50 for encoding and packaging and $67.24 for CloudFront distribution. The guide’s publication year is not stated, and this is a guide-specific example rather than a current quote or a forecast for another Region, resolution, audience, or configuration. Its key planning implication is that viewer distribution can dominate the example’s cost, so calculate delivery traffic rather than budgeting only for encoding.
Troubleshoot by checking the workflow boundary
- No feed reaches MediaLive: check that the selected source is active, the Link device or alternative input is configured for the intended workflow, and the input type matches the source. Confirm network and Region prerequisites for the chosen path.
- MediaLive receives input but viewers cannot play it: inspect the downstream chain, not just the input. Confirm that the configured outputs reach the intended MediaPackage endpoints or S3 destination, that the delivery path is configured, and that the player uses the correct playback endpoint.
- Playback format does not match the player: revisit the destination requirements and selected architecture. The MediaPackage reference supports HLS, DASH, and CMAF packaging; the S3 reference is an HLS path. Do not assume an HLS-only design supplies another format.
- Redundancy does not behave as expected: verify that redundant feeds are actually included and configured in the workflow. The AWS reference design’s two feeds are not automatically present in every build.
- Deployment fails or a service cannot be selected: check the template’s current prerequisites, the selected Region, and service availability. For deployments using MediaConnect flows, ensure the Region condition is met.
- Costs are higher than the estimate: compare actual viewer traffic, bitrate, hours, and regional rates with the assumptions in the guide example. Its one-hour SD-540p scenario is not a general cost ceiling.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your actual goal is a prerecorded-video YouTube channel that stays live around the clock, that is different from building a camera-based AWS production platform. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera or replace the MediaLive architecture above.
