You build a Flipkart-style homepage clone by writing a static front end: a semantic HTML5 page, a Flexbox header, CSS Grid product rows, and a small amount of JavaScript for carousels and loading states. Developer Rakesh Daniel describes this exact approach in a DEV Community post published September 1, 2026, and the structure below follows the same layout pattern. The result is an interface exercise, not a store. There is no real catalogue, payment flow or order backend behind it.
What the reference project includes
According to the author’s write-up, the clone has four parts that map well to a practice project:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Header and navigation: a delivery-location selector, login, a “More” menu and a cart element.
- Promotional carousels: wrappers for main banners, bank offers and product deals.
- Product sections: “Top Products” and “Trending Products” rows, with fallback text shown while items load.
- Deployment: the author names Vercel as the host.
The post presents these as learning outcomes: navigation menus, banner grids and loading fallbacks. It does not include performance figures, accessibility audits or a repository walkthrough, and I could not confirm that the live demo is still reachable. Treat the post as one developer’s account of the build, and the original is worth reading alongside this guide: How I Built a Full Flipkart Page Clone From Scratch Using My Own Code.

What a homepage clone is and is not
A homepage clone reproduces the visual structure of a page: where the header sits, how banners stack, how product rows scroll. It does not reproduce how the business works. Search suggestions, pricing, stock checks, login sessions, cart totals and checkout all depend on servers and data that a static page cannot supply. If you need those, the project grows into a full-stack application, which is a different exercise.
Keeping this boundary clear also shapes your file choices. Everything in a homepage clone can live in three files and open in a browser.
Build order
Work from the outside in: skeleton first, then layout, then behaviour. Each step below can be checked in the browser before you move on.
#1 Best Overall
1. Set up the project folder
- Create a folder such as
flipkart-clone/. - Add
index.html,styles.cssandscript.js. - Open
index.htmldirectly in a browser, or serve the folder with any static server, and confirm the page loads with no console errors.
2. Write semantic HTML5 landmarks
Use real landmark elements rather than a stack of div tags. Screen readers and developer tools both rely on them, and they make the CSS easier to write.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
<title>Shop Clone</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="styles.css">
</head>
<body>
<header class="site-header">
<!-- location selector, search, login, More, cart -->
</header>
<main>
<section class="promo-carousel" aria-label="Main banners"></section>
<section class="products" aria-labelledby="top-heading">
<h2 id="top-heading">Top Products</h2>
<div class="product-grid"></div>
</section>
</main>
<script src="script.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
3. Build the header with Flexbox
The header is a single row on desktop: logo, location, search, then account and cart links. Flexbox handles this well because the items have different widths and the search field should take the remaining space.

.site-header {
display: flex;
align-items: center;
gap: 16px;
padding: 8px 24px;
background: #2874f0;
color: #fff;
}
.search { flex: 1; }
Check the header at 1280 px and at 375 px. If the cart link wraps or pushes off-screen at the narrow width, add flex-wrap: wrap to the header and give the search field a min-width.
4. Lay out product rows with CSS Grid
Product sections are a grid of equal-sized cards. Use grid-template-columns with repeat(auto-fill, minmax(...)) so the number of columns adjusts to the screen width without media queries for every breakpoint.
Rank #3
.product-grid {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fill, minmax(180px, 1fr));
gap: 12px;
}
5. Add carousel behaviour in plain JavaScript
The carousel can be a horizontal flex row of slides that scrolls on a timer or on button clicks. Keep the logic small: track an index, move the track with a CSS transform, and clamp the index at both ends.
const track = document.querySelector('.promo-carousel');
let index = 0;
function showSlide(i) {
const slides = track.children.length;
index = (i + slides) % slides;
track.style.transform = `translateX(-${index * 100}%)`;
}
setInterval(() => showSlide(index + 1), 4000);
Pause the timer when the user hovers over the banner, and offer previous and next buttons with visible labels. Automatic rotation alone is hard to use for people who need more time to read.
6. Add loading fallbacks
Product data often arrives late. Render placeholder cards with the text “Loading…” as soon as the page opens, then replace them when data arrives. If the data request fails, replace the placeholders with a short message and a retry button rather than leaving empty grey boxes. The reference project describes this fallback text pattern, and it is one of the most useful habits to practise in a clone.

7. Deploy a static build
A folder with no build step can be deployed as a static site. Import the repository into Vercel, or drag the folder into a static host. Then open the deployed URL on a phone-sized browser window and on desktop. Confirm that images load from relative paths, that the carousel script runs, and that no console errors appear.
Common failure points
- Images do not load after deployment: paths that work locally can break when the file structure changes. Use relative paths such as
images/banner1.jpg. - Grid columns collapse on small screens: a fixed
grid-template-columnswith pixel widths wider than the viewport causes horizontal scrolling. Switch tominmaxwithauto-fill. - Carousel jumps or stalls: the transform percentage must match the slide width. If slides have margins, include them in the calculation.
- Script runs before the DOM exists: place the script tag before the closing
bodytag, or adddeferto it in the head.
Summary of layout methods
| Part of the page | Recommended method | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Header and navigation | Flexbox row with search taking remaining width | No overflow at 375 px and 1280 px |
| Promotional carousels | Flex track with CSS transform, plus JavaScript index | Index wraps correctly; timer pauses on hover |
| Product sections | CSS Grid with repeat(auto-fill, minmax()) |
Columns adjust without horizontal scroll |
| Loading state | Placeholder cards replaced on data arrival | Visible fallback text and retry on failure |
| Hosting | Static deployment (the reference project names Vercel) | Live URL loads and assets resolve |
Where to go next
Once the static version works, the next useful steps are adding real product data from a JSON file, making the search field filter that data, and running an accessibility check on the finished page. Each of these adds skills the visual clone alone does not teach.

A Flipkart-style homepage clone is a practical HTML, CSS and JavaScript exercise: semantic markup, Flexbox for the header, CSS Grid for product rows, and simple scripted carousels with loading fallbacks. It teaches layout and interface behaviour well. It does not teach commerce logic, and the demo’s current availability should be checked before you rely on it as a reference.
