Build the portfolio around your goals, time horizon, and ability to tolerate losses—not around a preset crypto percentage. Diversify across your whole portfolio first, then decide whether speculative crypto exposure belongs in it, how to obtain that exposure, and how you will review the mix over time. No allocation is right for every investor.
Start with the plan, not a crypto percentage
Before choosing investments, identify what the money is for, when you may need it, and how much loss you could withstand without derailing that goal. Money needed soon may call for a different mix from money invested for a distant goal. Your income, other savings, debts, and comfort with risk also matter.

The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance says in its March 31, 2026, Investor.gov Tips for 2026 bulletin that asset allocation depends on an investor’s risk tolerance and investing timeframe. The sources cited here do not establish a generally correct percentage for crypto. Treat any allocation you consider as a personal decision, not a universal rule or a target implied by this guide.

- Goal: What is this portfolio meant to fund?
- Time horizon: When might you need to withdraw the money?
- Capacity for loss: What would a substantial decline mean for your plans?
- Risk tolerance: Could you stick with your plan through sharp price swings, or would you be likely to sell in response?
If you cannot answer these questions yet, decide on the overall plan before adding a volatile asset.

Diversify across the whole portfolio
Asset allocation is the division of a portfolio among broad categories such as stocks, bonds, and cash. Diversification also means spreading investments within categories rather than concentrating in a small number of holdings. The SEC’s March 31, 2026, bulletin defines it this way: “Diversification means investing in a variety of assets to lower the overall risk of your investment portfolio.” It is a way to manage risk, not a guarantee of gains or protection from losses.
Look across all of your accounts when judging concentration. A portfolio that holds several crypto tokens may still be concentrated in one asset category, and a new crypto position can change the risk of an otherwise diversified mix. Count crypto exposure alongside the rest of your investments rather than treating a list of tokens as diversification by itself.

Check concentration before adding anything
- Review holdings across accounts, not just one brokerage or wallet.
- Consider whether multiple investments depend on the same category or source of risk.
- Decide whether any proposed crypto exposure fits the overall mix and the loss you can accept.
Understand what crypto adds to the risk
Crypto is speculative and can be highly volatile. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy warns in its March 23, 2023, Exercise Caution with Crypto Asset Securities: Investor Alert that crypto-asset securities can be exceptionally risky, volatile, and speculative, and that crypto platforms may lack important investor protections. The alert puts the potential loss plainly: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” That warning is about speculative investments; it does not establish that every crypto product or platform has identical risks.
Depending on the asset, product, and service involved, risks can include difficulty selling or withdrawing, a platform or counterparty failing, fraud, technology or security problems, and regulatory uncertainty. These risks are distinct from market-price risk: an asset can lose value even when a platform is functioning, and operational problems can create losses or impede access even when market prices have not changed in the same way.

Before proceeding, consider whether a full loss of the amount allocated would impair your essential expenses or other goals. If it would, the proposed exposure may not fit your financial plan.
Choose how you would get crypto exposure
Direct ownership and an exchange-traded product (ETP) provide exposure through different arrangements. Neither route is universally safer or suitable. The right comparison depends on what the product holds, who controls the assets or keys, the service providers involved, and the product’s current disclosures.

| Consideration | Direct crypto ownership | Bitcoin or ether ETP |
|---|---|---|
| How exposure is obtained | You acquire crypto through a service or transaction and hold it directly, either with a custodian or through self-custody. | You buy shares or other interests in an exchange-traded product designed to provide exposure to bitcoin or ether; consult the product’s disclosures for its structure. |
| Keys and custody | Custody is a separate choice. A custodian may control the private keys, or you may take responsibility for securing them yourself. | You generally do not personally manage crypto private keys for the ETP position. Review disclosures to understand the product’s custody arrangements. |
| Operational and platform considerations | Consider the trading service, custody arrangement, account security, and how you would handle access or withdrawal problems. | An ETP can avoid some personal transaction and key-management responsibilities, but it still has product and service-provider arrangements to review. |
| Fees and structure | Check the current terms for any service, transaction, or custody charges that apply. | Check current product disclosures for fees, structure, and other terms. The cited SEC materials do not provide a current fee comparison. |
| Crypto price risk | Exposure remains subject to the crypto asset’s price movements. | Bitcoin and ether ETPs do not eliminate the underlying assets’ price volatility or speculative nature. |
The SEC’s September 9, 2024, Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs) Providing Exposure to Bitcoin and Ether bulletin describes the key-management distinction and cautions that ETPs do not remove the assets’ volatility or speculative risk. An ETP may change how you access exposure; it does not make the underlying crypto price stable.
If you hold crypto directly, make custody a deliberate choice
Wallets manage private keys, which are used to access and authorize transactions involving crypto. A wallet does not remove the need to protect those keys. The SEC’s December 12, 2025, Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors bulletin discusses custody choices, wallets, private keys, and security practices.

Questions to answer before choosing custody
- If using a custodian: Understand who controls the keys, what account protections and withdrawal processes apply, and what could happen if the provider has operational or financial problems.
- If self-custodying: Learn how the wallet works and how you will protect private keys and any seed phrase. Losing access credentials can mean losing access to the assets.
- For either approach: Secure the associated accounts and devices, and understand recovery procedures before transferring funds.
Hardware wallets are one possible self-custody tool, not an SEC-endorsed requirement or a guarantee of safety. A device does not substitute for understanding key protection, recovery, and the risks of the services or software used alongside it.
Set a review and rebalancing rule
A portfolio can drift from its intended mix as holdings change in value or as you add money. Decide in advance how you will review it and what you will do if it moves away from the plan. The SEC and FINRA’s December 6, 2012, Investor Bulletin: Year-End Investment Considerations for Individual Investors describes rebalancing as restoring the intended allocation.
- Choose a review approach. Set a schedule or a threshold for checking whether the portfolio still matches your intended mix.
- Compare actual holdings with your plan. Include all relevant accounts and crypto exposure in the review.
- Restore the intended mix if needed. Options described in the SEC/FINRA bulletin include selling holdings that have become overweight, buying underweight categories, or directing new contributions toward underweight categories.
- Check the consequences before acting. Taxes, account rules, fees, and product details can affect implementation; review the rules that apply to your account and location.
A written rule can help keep a review from turning into a reaction to a single price move. The aim is to maintain the allocation you chose for your circumstances, not to predict short-term crypto prices.
Put the decisions together
Before investing, make sure you can state the portfolio’s purpose, explain why any crypto exposure fits your risk capacity, identify how you will obtain and safeguard that exposure, and describe how you will review and rebalance the mix. If any of those decisions is unresolved, pause to clarify it rather than treating crypto as a diversification shortcut.
