One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCustomize PowerToys from its Settings app: use the search box to find a control, use General settings for the app’s theme and startup behavior, and open a utility’s own page for settings such as Keyboard Manager remappings or Command Palette appearance. Keyboard Manager mappings work only while PowerToys is running.
Find a PowerToys setting
Open PowerToys Settings and type a feature name or setting keyword into the search box at the top. Results filter as you type. Select a result to jump to its control, or open all results if you want to compare matches. This is a quick route when you know what you want to change but not which utility page contains it. See Microsoft’s General settings documentation.

Change PowerToys’ overall appearance and behavior
Open General in PowerToys Settings for options that affect the Settings app and its flyout, rather than the appearance of every utility.

Remap keys and shortcuts with Keyboard Manager
In PowerToys Settings, open Keyboard Manager and choose Remap a key or Remap a shortcut. Add a row, choose the input in the Select column, and choose the output. Depending on the mapping, the output can be another key, a shortcut, or Unicode text. Shortcut mappings can also launch an app or open a URI. Microsoft’s Keyboard Manager guide covers the mapping controls.

Choose whether a shortcut applies everywhere or in one app
For a shortcut mapping, set a target app when you want the remapping limited to that app. Without a target, it applies globally across Windows. The target-app option is specific to shortcut behavior; do not assume every key mapping can be scoped in the same way.
Know the limits before assigning a combination
- PowerToys must be enabled and running in the background for remappings to take effect. If you exit PowerToys, the mappings stop applying.
- The reserved Win+L and Ctrl+Alt+Del combinations cannot be remapped. The Fn key also cannot be remapped in most cases.
- Shortcuts generally need a modifier and an action key and cannot exceed four keys, or five for a chord.
- A remapping is not guaranteed to override the operating system or another application. For example, Microsoft notes that Win+G often continues to open Xbox Game Bar even if reassigned. Check PowerToys conflict alerts and consider whether other software intercepts the combination.
Customize Command Palette separately
Command Palette has its own settings page; its appearance controls do not change the overall PowerToys Settings theme. Open Command Palette in PowerToys Settings to change its activation shortcut and personalize its display. Microsoft documents these options in its Command Palette settings guide.

Configure PowerToys across managed devices
For personal changes, the Settings app is usually the simplest option. Teams that need repeatable configuration can use Microsoft’s PowerToys DSC configuration approaches to define utility settings. DSC also provides data resources for Keyboard Manager profiles and FancyZones layouts. If PowerToys is running when changes are applied, the utility picks them up immediately; otherwise, they take effect the next time PowerToys starts.
