Build your first squad around the mission, not around the strongest individual units. Check the game’s squad limit and role descriptions, work out what the next mission asks of you, then pick roles that cover different jobs and fit the game’s own rules. No single lineup works across tactical games, because squad size, roles and action rules change from one title to the next.
Why there is no universal beginner squad
“Tactical strategy game” covers turn-based squad games, shooters with squad play and sports-style management systems. Their rules differ, so a build that works in one can fail in another. Two official EA guides show how different the logic can be:

- EA’s guide to Battlefield V squad play, “How to Fight and Win as a Squad”, recommends a mix of classes and combat roles and notes that battlefield situations differ. A Battlefield V squad holds up to four players, and that figure belongs to that game alone.
- EA’s “EA SPORTS FC 25 | FC IQ Deep Dive” (August 21, 2024) describes a system built on football positions and player roles. Roles shape off-ball behavior, and squad building is about balancing players against the tactical system. These details apply to that edition only.
The shared lesson is that composition should answer the task and the game’s mechanics. Treat any “best squad” list as an example from one game unless it names yours.

1. Find the hard limits
Read the tutorial or official manual for the squad size, the available roles or classes, and any mission-specific restrictions. These facts decide everything that follows.
#1 Best Overall
- Stratego is the strategic game where you challenge your opponents in the heat of battle
- Your task is to capture your opponent’s flag while defending your own
- Lead your men into battle, every move is crucial
- Includes 2 x 40 pre-printed playing pieces, Game board, Screen and 2 sorting trays for the pieces
- Suitable for 2 players, aged 8+
2. Identify what the mission asks
Is the goal to eliminate enemies, hold a point, escort someone or reach an exit? Use the game’s own role descriptions to cover complementary needs. Filling every slot with the same strength leaves gaps that a different kind of encounter will expose.
3. Match roles to the game’s system
Some games reward role familiarity or class specialization. EA’s FC 25 article treats this as a way to improve a tactic, and base roles remain viable. A specialization bonus is not compulsory, so weigh it against how well the unit fits the rest of the lineup.

4. Check the action economy
Look at how movement, attacks, abilities and other actions compete for turns or resources. An unofficial Zero Company beginner guide (Zero Company Wiki Team, June 13, 2026) describes action points as a trade-off among movement, attacks and abilities. That is one game’s rule, not a general one. Confirm any such detail in the publisher’s documentation. The guide’s framing of the beginner worry, how to keep your first squad alive, is a useful reminder to favor survivability over flashy damage early on.

5. Change one thing at a time
After a mission, swap a single unit or role based on what caused trouble. If you change several things at once, you will not know which change helped. This is practical advice inferred from the need to fit composition to situation, not the result of a tested build.

Comparing roles when you have real choices
| Question to ask | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| What job does the game assign this role? | Whether it duplicates or complements a unit you already have |
| How does it help the current objective? | Whether it earns a slot this mission, not just in general |
| What constraints or trade-offs do its abilities carry? | Whether a beginner can use it reliably under the action rules |
| How well does it fit the rest of the lineup? | Whether cohesion beats an isolated stat advantage |
Role names and effects vary by game, so use these questions as a framework and fill in the answers from your game’s own descriptions.

Common beginner mistakes
- Copying a squad from a guide for a different game, version or mission type.
- Stacking identical strengths instead of covering different needs.
- Treating a specialization or familiarity bonus as mandatory.
- Skipping the action rules, then finding that a unit cannot both move and use its key ability.
