For a first instruction-tuning run, choose a model whose license and chat format fit your use, prepare examples in that format, and use supervised fine-tuning (SFT) with a small held-out evaluation set. If memory is tight, LoRA or QLoRA can reduce what must be trained; neither removes the need to match the model, data, software and hardware.
What should fine-tuning improve?
Start by describing the behavior you want to change: for example, answering in a particular format, following domain-specific instructions, or handling a recurring task more consistently. Write down what a good response looks like and gather representative inputs and outputs. Fine-tuning is one training option, not an automatic solution for every task; the general training-library guidance does not establish when it will outperform other approaches.

Before preparing a run, choose an open-weight base model and check its own license, tokenizer, chat template and supported training format. Licensing is model-specific; check the dataset’s terms as well, especially if you plan to distribute a trained model or its adapter.
What data format do you need for instruction tuning?
For conversational instruction tuning, you need both a conversational dataset containing instruction-response examples and a chat template. The template defines the roles, special tokens and turn boundaries the model expects. Hugging Face’s TRL SFTTrainer documentation describes these requirements and supports conversational data.

Pair with NVIDIA NemoClaw for sandboxed agentic workflows and policy-based privacy controls. Build, fine-tune, and run sensitive workloads without a single packet leaving your lab.
Match the base model’s conversation format
Use the selected model’s template and end-of-turn conventions rather than inventing a generic format. Some models include a template already. Check whether the template’s end-of-sequence token aligns with the token used in your training setup; a mismatch can change how turns are represented.
Curate examples for the intended behavior
Use examples that resemble the inputs the model will receive and the outputs you want it to produce. Keep training examples separate from held-out evaluation examples so the evaluation does not simply measure recall of training data. The cited guidance does not establish a universal dataset size or quality threshold, so choose and assess data in relation to the task.
TRL also documents prompt-completion data: completion-only loss is the default for that data type in the relevant configuration, while assistant-only loss is available for conversational prompt-completion data. Confirm the behavior in the documentation matching your installed TRL version.

How do you run a first SFT experiment?
Supervised fine-tuning (SFT) is a straightforward starting point when you have examples of prompts or conversations paired with desired responses. TRL’s SFTTrainer supports SFT, including conversational data and chat templates. The library is actively maintained, so check your installed package version and use its matching documentation before copying code or configuration.
- Define the task and evaluation cases. Set aside representative examples that will not be used for training, and decide what qualities matter for the task.
- Verify the model and data. Check the base model’s license, tokenizer, template and supported format; verify dataset terms and format your examples accordingly.
- Choose the training approach. Use full fine-tuning if your compute and workflow support updating all model weights, or consider PEFT if you want to train a smaller set of added parameters.
- Configure and run a small baseline. Use the TRL documentation corresponding to your installed version to set up
SFTTrainer, then run a limited experiment before committing more data or compute. - Evaluate on held-out cases. Compare outputs with the base model on the task-specific examples you set aside. The sources do not prescribe a universal benchmark or pass threshold.
- Save for the intended use. Confirm that the resulting model or adapter format is supported by the deployment path you plan to use; deployment mechanics depend on that path.
Should you use full fine-tuning, LoRA or QLoRA?
Full fine-tuning updates the model’s weights. Parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) instead trains added parameters while keeping the base model frozen. LoRA is one PEFT approach; QLoRA combines LoRA with quantization to reduce memory needs. The best fit depends on task performance, compute, compatibility and how you intend to manage the resulting checkpoint or adapter.
| Approach | What changes | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Full fine-tuning | Updates the model weights. | Trainable parameter count, memory and compute, flexibility, and checkpoint handling. |
| LoRA / PEFT | Trains added parameters while the base model stays frozen. | Adapter size, target modules, learning rate, task quality and portability. |
| QLoRA | Combines 4-bit quantization with LoRA. | Memory reduction, task quality, hardware and software compatibility, and run stability. |
When LoRA or QLoRA can help
Hugging Face’s TRL PEFT integration guide says PEFT can reduce computational and memory requirements by training a small number of additional parameters while the base model remains frozen. It describes QLoRA as using 4-bit quantization with frozen base weights and LoRA adapters, and says memory requirements can be reduced by up to 4× compared with standard LoRA. That figure is the guide’s claim, not a guarantee for every model or setup.

The guide shows example settings, including a learning rate of 2.0e-5 for full SFT and 2.0e-4 with LoRA, and describes PEFT learning rates around 10 times full fine-tuning rates as typical guidance. These are documentation examples, not universal optimal settings. It also discusses LoRA rank, alpha, dropout and target modules; treat them as configuration choices to assess on your task, not values that can be assumed to fit every model.

Why DPO and reward-based methods are not the default first step
TRL lists DPO, reward modeling, GRPO and other trainers separately from SFT. These are additional post-training paths, not prerequisites for an initial SFT experiment. They involve different objectives and data or feedback needs, so consider them when the task and evaluation design call for them rather than adding them automatically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What hardware do you need?
There is no general GPU or VRAM minimum established by the cited TRL guidance. Requirements depend on the base model, sequence length, batch size, quantization, training method and software stack. QLoRA may be useful when memory is constrained: TRL describes it as a way to lower memory needs and says it can enable training large models on consumer hardware, but that does not establish that a particular card can handle a particular workload.

How do you evaluate whether fine-tuning worked?
Use held-out examples that reflect the real task, and compare the fine-tuned model with the base model on the same cases. Assess the outcomes that matter for the intended use—for example, whether responses follow the required format or handle the target instructions correctly. This is a task-specific evaluation approach, not a universal benchmark or success threshold: the cited sources do not specify a complete evaluation protocol.
Record the base model identifier and revision, dataset version, tokenizer and chat template, training-library versions, seed, configuration and evaluation results. This makes it possible to interpret and reproduce a run; the sources do not prescribe a single experiment-record format.
