To run university lectures as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, send a continuous feed from an encoder or cloud streaming service to YouTube Live Control Room. A YouTube watch playlist is not itself a live-stream source: YouTube’s documented workflow requires an encoder feed and a stream URL and key. Before you start, secure rebroadcast rights for every part of the recordings, enable live streaming on the channel, and plan for monitoring and local recording.
How the setup works
Think of this as two separate pieces: the lecture playlist determines what plays and in what order; an encoder or cloud service delivers that playback to YouTube as a live broadcast. YouTube describes playlists as collections of videos and documents live streaming through an encoder connected with a stream URL and key. Its reviewed guidance does not provide a way to turn a YouTube watch-playlist URL directly into a live feed.

YouTube’s encoder directory lists OBS and describes Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. These listings confirm that the options exist, not that they have equivalent features, reliability, pricing, or fit for your lecture collection. Check the chosen provider’s current documentation and test a complete playback cycle.

Choose how the stream will run
| Approach | Where it runs | What your team must operate | Verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local software encoder | A computer operated by your team | The computer, software, network connection, playback or scheduling method, and restart process | Current operating-system and hardware requirements, playback method, and recovery behavior |
| Hardware encoder | A dedicated encoding device | The device, input or signal path, network, and unattended restart process | Supported inputs, output protocol, and behavior after a failure |
| Cloud prerecorded-video service | The provider’s infrastructure | The provider account and service configuration | Current features, service limits, pricing, rights workflow, and any uptime commitments |
The operational questions in the final column are checks, not claims that any option has measured performance. YouTube’s encoder documentation does not establish a universal computer specification. If you use a local encoder, consult its current requirements rather than assuming a particular PC is sufficient.

Before you build the broadcast
Clear rights for the entire recording
YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary rights to use live content on Google services. YouTube scans live streams for third-party material; a match can trigger a warning, replacement placeholder, temporary interruption, or termination. Even licensed material may cause an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting where applicable.
For a lecture collection, check permissions for the lecture recording and every included element: slides, music, images, video clips, course materials, and student contributions. Educational subject matter or public availability does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast. The permissions needed depend on the rights, contracts, jurisdiction, and content.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Confirm channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s current Live Control Room well before announcing a launch, since eligibility and interface behavior can change.
Prepare the lecture sequence
Decide which recordings may be broadcast, their order, and how playback should continue at the end of the sequence. Build or schedule that sequence in the chosen encoder or service; do not assume YouTube’s watch playlist will supply the live feed. Test representative lectures, including any with different audio levels, aspect ratios, or embedded media.

Create the YouTube stream and connect an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create or select a live stream using YouTube’s current encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder or cloud service’s YouTube output settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream.
- Configure the lecture playback. Load or schedule the authorized recordings in the chosen delivery system and confirm how it handles the end of the playlist, file transitions, and restarts.
- Send a test feed. When the encoder connects, check the preview in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast. Confirm that the picture, audio, and sequence are correct.
- Start the broadcast from Live Control Room where applicable. Monitor stream health and confirm that viewers can hear and see the lecture as intended.
YouTube’s encoder workflow creates a watch page when it receives content. Stop the encoder when the broadcast ends. For a continuous channel, test the complete sequence and the recovery procedure before relying on it unattended.
Use encoder settings that match the connection
For an RTMP/RTMPS workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. These are starting points from YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the target resolution, then confirm that the actual upload connection can sustain it. Do not rely on a generic bitrate copied from an old guide.

HLS is a separate ingest option. YouTube describes it as higher latency than RTMP and specifies segment and rolling-playlist requirements. In that technical context, “rolling playlist” means HLS media segments; it is not a creator’s playlist of lecture videos. Use HLS only if the selected encoder supports YouTube’s current requirements for that ingest path.

A 24/7 broadcast needs someone or something responsible for monitoring, recovery, and an independent archive. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only recording of a continuous channel; retain a local archive or another recording under your control.

- Test a failure and recovery before launch. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation.
Troubleshoot common launch problems
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | Channel verification, a restriction in the prior 90 days, or first-time activation still processing | Check current channel eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first activation. |
| YouTube receives no encoder feed | Stream URL or key entered incorrectly, or encoder output configuration | Re-copy the URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the encoder’s YouTube output settings, and check its connection status. |
| Preview is unstable or stream health is poor | Bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity, or settings do not match the chosen ingest path | Use YouTube’s current settings table for the target resolution, test upload capacity, and monitor stream health. |
| Broadcast is interrupted after a copyright match | Third-party content in the lecture or an unallowlisted channel despite a license | Confirm rights for all included material and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. |
| The stream has no usable YouTube archive | Broadcast exceeded 12 hours | Retain a separate archive; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may also be limited or unavailable. |
