How to Boot ChromeOS Flex from a USB Drive on a Mac

Use Option at startup to select a ChromeOS Flex USB installer on a Mac. Check model compatibility first, and choose live boot—not installation—to try it without replacing macOS.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To boot ChromeOS Flex from a USB drive on a Mac, create the installer on a USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity, shut the Mac down completely, connect the drive, then turn the Mac on while immediately holding or repeatedly pressing the Option key. Select the USB installer in the startup choices. Choose the live-boot option if you want to try ChromeOS Flex without replacing macOS; installing it is a separate, destructive step that erases the Mac’s existing system and data.

Before you start: check the Mac and protect the USB drive

ChromeOS Flex is not guaranteed to work on every Mac. Google guarantees operation only on models in its certified-model list, and the exact model variant matters. Check your Mac’s exact model against the current list and read any model-specific notes before making an installer. The list is maintained and can change; Google’s certified-model page was last updated September 2, 2026. For example, it lists Mac mini 7,1 through 2026, MacBook Air 6,1 through 2026, and MacBook Air 7,2 through 2027. Those examples do not establish compatibility for other Macs with similar names.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use the model identifier, not just a broad name such as “MacBook Air,” when checking. Two Macs with similar product names can be different model variants, and the certified list may treat them differently. Also look for the listing’s status and model-specific notes: a model that appeared on the list in the past may now be decertified. Support dates and certification status can change, so check Google’s current ChromeOS Flex certified-model list again before relying on an older compatibility claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s general minimum requirements are an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible processor, 4 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, the ability to boot from USB, and BIOS administrator access. These broad requirements do not replace checking the certified list for a particular Mac. A Mac that meets the general specifications is not necessarily a certified or guaranteed model. Treat the requirements as a basic eligibility screen, not a promise that every device meeting them will boot or work as expected.

  • Use a USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. A 16 GB drive is also a reasonable capacity to search for, but Google does not require a particular brand.
  • Back up any files on that drive first. Creating the installer erases its contents, so do not use a drive containing the only copy of important files.
  • Keep the Mac connected to power if practical, and save any open work before shutting it down.
  • Know which outcome you want before startup: a temporary live trial or a full installation. The latter is not a way to simply test the system and undo the change later.

Create the ChromeOS Flex USB installer

You can create the installer using Chromebook Recovery Utility on a Mac, Windows PC, or Chromebook that has Chrome installed. The device used to make the USB does not have to be the Mac you plan to boot. Google recommends Recovery Utility as the straightforward option. Alternatively, download the ChromeOS Flex image and write it to the USB with a compatible image-writing utility if you are comfortable with that process. Both methods erase the USB drive, and neither requires a specific USB brand.

The choice between these methods is mainly about familiarity. Recovery Utility is the recommended guided route; downloading and writing the image is an alternative for someone comfortable choosing a disk image and target drive in an image-writing tool. In either case, the critical safety check is selecting the intended USB drive. A wrong target selection can erase the contents of the wrong drive, so confirm the drive identity and capacity before continuing. Google’s setup instructions list 8 GB as the minimum USB capacity.

Option 1: Use Chromebook Recovery Utility

  1. On a device with Chrome, open the Chromebook Recovery Utility.
  2. Start the process to create recovery media and choose ChromeOS Flex as the device to recover. Follow the utility’s prompts to select the USB drive.
  3. Confirm that you selected the correct drive. Its contents will be erased.
  4. Let the utility download and write the installer, then safely eject the USB drive when it reports that the process is complete.

Option 2: Write the downloaded image

  1. Download the ChromeOS Flex image using Google’s instructions.
  2. Use an image-writing utility compatible with the downloaded image format to write it to the USB drive.
  3. Check the target drive selection before writing: this process erases the selected drive.
  4. When writing finishes, safely eject the USB installer.

The Recovery Utility route is generally easier to follow; direct image writing is an alternative for readers already comfortable selecting and writing disk images. The finished USB is used the same way regardless of which creation method you chose. If the installer later fails to appear at startup, do not assume that buying a particular brand will fix the problem: first verify that the installer was created successfully, then try another drive or port as part of troubleshooting.

Boot the Mac from the USB drive

  1. Shut the Mac down fully. Do not leave it asleep or merely close the lid.
  2. Insert the ChromeOS Flex USB installer into the Mac.
  3. Press the power button and immediately begin repeatedly pressing the Option key. Option is next to Command on an Apple keyboard. Keep it held or press it repeatedly as startup begins.
  4. When the Mac shows startup choices, select the USB installer. The drive may appear under a recognizable device name or by its storage size; if several choices appear, look for the one that corresponds to the inserted USB drive.
  5. Wait for ChromeOS Flex to start. If your purpose is to explore it without replacing macOS, choose the live-boot or try option when prompted.

Google’s boot instructions say to press the power button and immediately begin repeatedly pressing the device’s boot key; for Apple, the listed key is Option, next to Command. The point is to bring up startup choices before the Mac proceeds into its usual startup. If you press the key only after macOS has begun loading, the startup-choice screen may not appear.

The timing of the key press matters: begin immediately after pressing power. If macOS starts normally instead, shut the Mac down and try again, pressing Option sooner. Make sure the Mac was fully shut down and that the USB drive is connected before powering on. When the startup choices do appear, take a moment to identify the external installer rather than selecting the Mac’s internal startup volume. Names can be less obvious than expected; a recognizable USB brand or capacity may help distinguish it.

Enfain 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive 10 Pack | Swivel Thumb Drives with 31 Labels | Gift-Ready Packaging for Corporate Events, Office & Team Distributions (Black)
  • FAT32 pre-formatted for broad compatibility: These drives work with Windows (XP through 11), macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, Smart TVs, Car Stereos, and USB-enabled printers without requiring drivers or software installation. For files larger than 4GB, reformat to exFAT using the built-in format utility on your computer.
  • 31 labels included – pre-printed and blank: Each pack contains 19 pre-printed color-coded labels and 12 blank white labels for organizing drives by project, department, person, or event category. Labels attach directly to each drive for quick identification during multi-user distributions.

Selecting the USB entry starts the process of loading the installer environment; it does not itself mean that the Mac’s internal system has been erased. The potentially destructive choice comes later, if you select full installation. If your goal is only to see whether the system starts, stay with the try or live-boot path and do not proceed into installation.

Live boot or full installation: choose deliberately

Booting the live system from USB and installing ChromeOS Flex are different actions. Live boot is intended for temporary exploration or testing and leaves the installed operating system in place. Google notes that live boot has performance and storage limitations, does not support automatic updates, and cannot enroll the device for management. Google recommends full installation for ongoing use, but that recommendation does not make installation a safe test: installing replaces the existing system.

Choice What happens Important limits or risks
Live boot / try ChromeOS Flex Runs temporarily from the USB installer without replacing the installed operating system. Performance and storage are limited; automatic updates and management enrollment are not supported.
Full installation Replaces the existing operating system on the Mac. Erases existing data, applications, settings, and operating system. Google warns that lost data is permanently unrecoverable even if installation fails.

For a short trial, live boot is the lower-risk choice because it does not replace the system installed on the Mac. It is also not equivalent to an installed, regularly updated setup: Google lists performance and storage limitations, and says live boot does not support automatic updates or management enrollment. A live trial can answer whether the startup path works and let you explore temporarily, but it should not be mistaken for a full assessment of how an installed system will perform.

If you only want to see whether ChromeOS Flex starts or to explore its interface, remain in the live environment and do not choose full installation. If you intend to install it, back up everything you need before proceeding and be prepared for the Mac’s existing system and contents to be erased. Do not treat the live-boot choice as an installer confirmation or assume that selecting installation can be undone. Google warns that data lost during a full installation is permanently unrecoverable, even if that installation fails. The decision should therefore come after you have checked the exact model, considered the live-boot limitations, and made a separate backup of anything you need to keep.

If the Mac does not boot from the USB

Work through the checks below in order. A startup failure may be caused by the drive, port, startup selection, or model compatibility; changing the installer drive does not make an uncertified Mac guaranteed to work. Google’s general requirement that a device support USB boot also matters, but it does not replace the model-specific certification check.

The USB drive does not appear in startup choices

  • Confirm that the installer was created successfully and that the drive is connected before startup.
  • Shut the Mac down fully, then power it on and immediately press Option repeatedly.
  • Try another USB drive. Google notes that some drives, including some SanDisk drives, may not work as installers. This is not a requirement to use another brand unless the drive you have is failing to work.
  • Try a different USB port. If the Mac has more than one, the port itself may be relevant.
  • Check whether USB boot is enabled where applicable. The general requirement includes USB boot capability; the exact availability of related settings depends on the device.
  • Recheck the exact Mac model and any notes on the certified-model list.

Make changes one at a time where possible. For example, check the startup-key timing before changing drives, then try another port or another USB drive if the installer still does not appear. This makes it easier to tell which factor helped. If you remake the installer, remember that creating it erases the USB drive again; verify the target before starting the write process.

The Mac starts macOS instead

The startup-key timing is the first thing to revisit. Power off completely, leave the USB connected, press the power button, and start pressing Option immediately. If the startup choices appear, select the USB entry rather than the internal drive. Closing the lid or leaving the Mac asleep is not the same as shutting it down for a fresh startup.

The screen is black or startup takes a long time after installation

Google’s Mac-specific guidance says to choose EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex as the default startup choice in this situation. The applicable choice can vary, so use the entry that appears on your Mac. This advice concerns a black screen or long delay after installation; it is not a reason to install ChromeOS Flex if your purpose is only to test it from USB.

Google also describes clearing PRAM/NVRAM as a troubleshooting measure, but it is not a universal first step: Google specifically warns not to reset NVRAM on several very old models, including iMac 5,2 and MacBook 2,1, 3,1, and 4,1. Check the Mac-specific guidance and model notes before trying that procedure. In particular, do not apply the reset advice indiscriminately to an older Mac without confirming whether Google’s warning applies to it.

What to verify before relying on ChromeOS Flex

A successful USB boot shows that the Mac can start the live environment; it does not by itself establish that every function will work reliably or that the model is supported. Google’s certification status is model-specific, and its list includes models that are decertified as well as currently certified ones. Check the current listing and any notes for the exact model before deciding whether to install. For a temporary trial, live boot lets you explore without committing to replacement; for a permanent change, first confirm compatibility and make a separate, complete backup of anything you cannot afford to lose.

Keep the different checks in their proper roles. The minimum requirements—x86-64-compatible architecture, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, USB boot capability, and BIOS administrator access—are general device requirements. Certification is the model-specific check Google uses to identify supported devices. The USB installer has its own requirement of at least 8 GB and is erased during creation. Meeting one of these conditions does not substitute for the others: a sufficiently large USB drive does not prove that the Mac is certified, and meeting the general hardware minimums does not guarantee that a specific model is supported.

Finally, keep the test and installation decisions separate. A live boot is temporary and preserves the existing operating system, but has limitations and is not a managed or automatically updated installation. A full installation is intended for ongoing use, but replaces the operating system and erases existing data, applications, and settings. If you are not ready for that loss, stop at the live environment. If you do intend to install, make a backup before beginning and treat the erasure warning as permanent, not as a routine setup prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What key do I press to boot ChromeOS Flex from USB on a Mac?

Use Option, which is next to Command on an Apple keyboard. Shut the Mac down fully, connect the installer, press the power button, and immediately begin repeatedly pressing Option. Then select the USB installer from startup choices.

Can I try ChromeOS Flex without erasing macOS?

Yes. Choose the live-boot or try option after starting from the USB installer. Live boot is temporary and leaves the installed operating system in place. Do not choose full installation for a trial: Google says installation replaces the existing system and erases data, applications, and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How large does the USB drive need to be, and will creating the installer erase it?

Google specifies at least 8 GB. Creating the installer erases the USB drive, whether you use Chromebook Recovery Utility or write a downloaded image, so back up anything on it first and confirm that you selected the right drive.

Will ChromeOS Flex work on any Mac that meets the minimum requirements?

No. The general requirements include an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible architecture, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, USB boot capability, and BIOS administrator access, but Google guarantees operation only on certified models. Check the exact Mac model and its notes on the current certified-model list.

What if the Mac does not show the USB installer?

Make sure the installer was created successfully, shut the Mac down fully, connect the drive before startup, and press Option immediately after powering on. If needed, try another USB port or USB drive; Google notes that some drives, including some SanDisk drives, may not work. Recheck the exact model’s certification as well.

Should I reset PRAM or NVRAM if startup fails?

Not as a universal first step. Google describes clearing PRAM/NVRAM for some Mac troubleshooting, but warns not to reset NVRAM on several very old models, including iMac 5,2 and MacBook 2,1, 3,1, and 4,1. Check the Mac-specific instructions and model notes first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do about a black screen or long delay after installation?

Google’s Mac-specific guidance says to choose EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex as the default startup choice, depending on the entry available on that Mac. For older models, check the NVRAM warning before attempting any reset.

The Bottom Line

To boot ChromeOS Flex from USB on a Mac, use an installer of at least 8 GB, shut down completely, and press Option immediately after powering on. Check the exact model against Google’s current certified list. Choose live boot to try the system without replacing macOS; full installation erases the existing system and data, so back up first.
