Double Glazing vs. Secondary Glazing for Reducing Street Noise

Secondary glazing can create a wider acoustic cavity than standard double glazing, but window labels do not guarantee noise reduction. Compare whole-assembly evidence, seals and traffic ratings.

Secondary glazing can be a strong choice for reducing street noise because it adds a second window with a potentially much wider air gap than the narrow cavity inside a typical double-glazed unit. But neither “secondary” nor “double” is an acoustic performance rating: the panes, gap, frame, seals, installation and noise frequency all matter. Compare evidence for the complete proposed window assembly—not just the glass—and do not assume that a standard thermal double-glazed replacement will automatically make a room quieter.

What is the difference, and which is more promising for street noise?

Double glazing puts two panes in one sealed unit, generally with a relatively narrow cavity between them. Secondary glazing adds a separate internal window behind the existing one. The two-window arrangement can create a much larger air space, which is the main acoustic distinction to investigate when comparing options for a noisy street-facing room. The British Standard BS 8233:2014 advises an air space of at least 100 mm for secondary glazing and says approximately 300 mm is desirable for good performance over the main frequency range of interest. These are design recommendations, not a promise of a particular decibel reduction in every building. BS 8233:2014

A normal thermal double-glazed unit is not automatically an acoustic upgrade over a single pane. BS 8233:2014 says: “A double-glazed unit is unlikely to perform better than a single pane of mass equivalent to the thicker pane of the sealed unit, and should be used in a frame with good seals to realize its full insulating potential.” In other words, simply adding a second pane inside a conventional, narrow-cavity unit does not establish how much traffic noise the finished window will reduce. The standard’s point about a well-sealed frame also applies to the practical decision: a good glass specification cannot compensate for air leaks around a frame or another weak route through the façade. BS 8233:2014

There is no universal head-to-head figure that says secondary glazing beats double glazing by a fixed number of decibels under matched conditions. Published ratings cited in planning assessments belong to specified systems and assessment contexts, not every product carrying those labels. Your best option depends on the existing window, the space available for an inner unit, the noise problem and the evidence a supplier can provide for the exact assembly.

How the two options compare

Factor Double glazing Secondary glazing Why it matters
Construction Two panes in one sealed unit, usually separated by a relatively narrow cavity. A separate inner window is fitted behind the existing window, leaving a larger cavity between the two window systems. The larger separation can be an acoustic advantage, but the labels alone do not specify how the complete window will perform. BS 8233:2014; Greater London Authority guidance
Relationship to the existing window Usually involves replacing the existing window or installing a new double-glazed window system. Can retain the existing primary window and add an internal unit. Suitability depends on the existing window’s condition, how it opens, available reveal depth, installation details and any conservation constraints. A site-specific assessment is needed.
Acoustic design variables Pane thickness and arrangement, any acoustic laminate, cavity, frame and seals all contribute. The inner pane, cavity width, frame and seals contribute alongside the retained primary window. Request evidence for the complete assembly rather than a glass-only claim. BS 8233:2014; Hillcrest NW Ltd. planning noise assessment, 2022
Air-space reference The gap within a standard sealed unit is much smaller than a typical secondary-window cavity. BS 8233:2014 says at least 100 mm, with approximately 300 mm desirable for good performance over the main frequency range of interest. These dimensions guide design; they do not guarantee a result or replace whole-window evidence. BS 8233:2014
Evidence to compare Ask for Rw and any relevant spectrum adaptation term, such as Rw + Ctr for traffic, for the proposed complete window. Ask for the same metrics and check that the rating covers the primary window together with the secondary unit. A single weighted number can conceal frequency-specific differences; compare equivalent whole-window evidence. Hillcrest NW Ltd. planning noise assessment, 2022

What the published decibel examples do—and do not—show

Planning assessments show why it is important to read the system description beside the rating. They do not provide a controlled, universal comparison of secondary glazing with double glazing.

Assessment example Specified construction Reported value How to interpret it
Hillcrest NW Ltd., dated 18 November 2022 4 mm existing glass, 200 mm air cavity and 8 mm secondary pane. Rw 50 dB. This is the rating listed for that specified secondary-glazing configuration in that project assessment—not a typical result or guarantee for another property. Assessment
Hillcrest NW Ltd., dated 18 November 2022 6 mm glass, 16 mm air cavity and 4 mm glass in a double-glazing configuration. Rw 21 dB. The report also gives a separate Rw + Ctr figure. Rw and Rw + Ctr are different metrics; the Rw value alone should not be treated as the traffic-adjusted figure or as a matched test against the secondary system. Assessment
Planning assessment dated 4 August 2025 Typical thermal double glazing, as described in that assessment. Approximately 31 dB Rw. This is a figure cited by one planning assessment, not a universal rating for current double-glazed products or a guarantee for an installed window. Assessment

Do not use these examples to calculate a fixed advantage for one approach. The configurations differ, and the available examples are not a controlled comparison under matched conditions. A planning value may describe a project specification or assessment rather than a product tested in the same way as the option you are considering. Ask the supplier to identify the test or calculation method and exactly which parts of the installed assembly the result covers.

What Rw and Ctr tell you about road noise

Rw is a single-number rating used to describe sound reduction. For traffic, ask whether the evidence also reports Rw + Ctr. Ctr is a spectrum adaptation term relevant to noise sources such as road traffic; it helps account for the character of the sound spectrum in a way that Rw alone may not. Do not compare one option’s Rw directly with another option’s Rw + Ctr as if they were the same measurement.

A weighted figure is useful for comparing evidence, but it cannot tell you exactly how loud a particular street will seem inside your room. The result depends on the actual sound, the façade and the installation, as well as the rating. If the intrusive sound is especially low-frequency, ask for frequency-band data as well as the weighted rating. That information can help assess whether the evidence addresses the type of noise you notice instead of relying on a single overall number.

How to choose between replacing a window and adding an inner one

Consider secondary glazing when retaining the existing window is important

Secondary glazing may be worth investigating if you want to keep the primary window and can accommodate a separate inner unit with a substantial cavity. It is not enough to know that the gap is “wide”: the frame, seals, opening arrangement and the original window all remain part of the performance question. Have the installer assess the condition and geometry of the existing window and explain how the new unit will fit and seal.

For cavity planning, BS 8233:2014 recommends at least 100 mm and identifies approximately 300 mm as desirable for good performance over the main frequency range of interest. A Greater London Authority document gives a 50–150 mm range for acoustic aims. Those recommendations are not identical, and neither should be treated as a universal minimum, maximum or guaranteed outcome. Ask the designer to explain the cavity proposed for your window and the performance evidence for that specific arrangement. BS 8233:2014; Greater London Authority, November 2015

Consider replacement double glazing as a complete window decision

If replacing the existing window is already necessary, assess the proposed double-glazed system on its documented acoustic performance, not on the word “double” or its thermal specification alone. Pane choices, any laminated glass, the unit cavity, frame design and seals all affect the system. Ask for the performance of the complete proposed window and whether that value applies to the exact frame and configuration being quoted.

Where noise reduction is a primary goal, compare a replacement proposal with a secondary-glazing proposal using equivalent evidence: the same kind of rating, relevant traffic spectrum information and clear identification of the assembly. Do not assume that retaining a window is always cheaper or that replacement is always more effective; the evidence here does not establish current installation prices or a universal outcome. Obtain local quotes for the actual work and compare the stated scope and performance basis.

Check the rest of the façade and the seals

Sound can enter through the glass and through other routes in the façade. A better pane cannot make up for a poorly sealed frame, a leaky opening or another weak path. Have obvious air leaks and the condition of the frame inspected as part of the assessment, rather than treating the glazing specification in isolation.

Self-adhesive weather stripping may be relevant to a minor air leak on a suitable frame, but a generic strip is not an established soundproofing fix and may not suit the window. The importance of good seals does not mean that an improvised seal can substitute for a correctly designed and fitted window system. Ask a competent installer to identify the leak and recommend an appropriate repair.

Acoustic laminated glass: an option, not a complete answer

Acoustic laminated glass is available in single, double and triple configurations. Manufacturers describe products designed to improve sound reduction: STADIP SILENCE can be used as monolithic glass or incorporated into double- or triple-glazed units, while Optiphon is laminated glass with a special PVB interlayer and configurations intended for project-specific sound reduction. These product descriptions establish design options, not the performance of a finished window in your home. STADIP SILENCE product information; Optiphon product information

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a proposal includes acoustic laminate, ask which pane or unit uses it, what the glass specification is, and whether the quoted rating belongs to the glass alone or to a tested or calculated complete window. A product name by itself does not let you compare it with a secondary-glazing system, because frames, cavities, seals and the retained window may differ.

A practical checklist for comparing quotes

Give each installer the same description of the noise problem and ask for written answers. This makes it easier to compare the design rather than relying on a headline claim.

  • Identify the assembly: Is the proposal a replacement sealed unit/window or an added secondary window? List the existing pane, proposed panes, cavity dimensions, frame and opening arrangement.
  • Confirm what the rating covers: Is the quoted value for glass alone or for the complete window assembly, including its frame and design features?
  • Request comparable metrics: Ask for Rw and, where traffic is relevant, Rw + Ctr. For especially low-frequency noise, ask whether frequency-band data is available.
  • Ask for the evidence basis: Is the figure from a test or a calculation? What precise construction does it describe, and does that match the system being offered?
  • Check the cavity proposal: For secondary glazing, record the actual separation between windows and ask why that dimension is proposed. Compare it with the relevant guidance without treating a recommended gap as a performance guarantee.
  • Include seals and installation: Ask how the units will seal, how the installer will address existing leaks, and whether any limitations of the existing frame affect the expected result.
  • Check practical fit: Ask whether the secondary unit will interfere with opening, cleaning or access to the existing window, and whether the proposed installation is appropriate for the building and any conservation requirements.
  • Compare the full scope and price: Request current local quotes that state what is included, what work is required to the existing window and what acoustic evidence supports the proposal. No current installation-price comparison is established by the cited assessments.

What to do if the promised reduction is unclear

If the supplier gives only a glass rating

Ask for the acoustic evidence for the finished window, including the frame and design features. If the supplier cannot provide a whole-window test or an evidence-based calculation, treat the glass figure as incomplete for predicting the result in your room. A planning assessment can show a specified system’s rating, but it does not automatically certify a different installation.

If two proposals quote different kinds of numbers

Ask both suppliers to state Rw and the relevant traffic term, if available, for the complete assembly and to identify the test or calculation basis. Do not rank an Rw figure against an Rw + Ctr figure, or compare ratings for different constructions as though they were obtained under matched conditions. If the noise has a prominent low-frequency component, request frequency-band evidence before deciding whether one weighted value answers your concern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a proposed cavity is much smaller than the guidance you have seen

Ask the designer to explain the intended acoustic performance and provide the evidence for that exact configuration. The guidance differs by source and context: BS 8233:2014 describes at least 100 mm, with about 300 mm desirable over the main frequency range, while a London planning document gives 50–150 mm for acoustic aims. Neither range alone predicts the outcome of a specific window.

Make the decision on evidence for your window

For street-noise reduction, secondary glazing’s wider potential air gap makes it a serious option, particularly when retaining the existing window is useful and there is room for an inner unit. Double glazing may still be the appropriate replacement choice, but a conventional thermal unit should not be assumed to outperform a single pane acoustically just because it has two panes. The decisive comparison is between documented, complete window assemblies with relevant traffic metrics, realistic cavity and seal details, and installation plans suited to the property.

None of the cited planning figures is a universal guarantee, and they do not establish a fixed decibel advantage for secondary glazing. Ask for evidence that matches the construction being quoted, then have the existing window and other potential sound paths assessed before committing.
