Choose RAM for the software and tasks you expect to run at the same time—not just for the minimum needed to start Windows. For general use, Microsoft’s buying guide suggests 8–16 GB; photo or video editing may suit around 16 GB; and its guidance for gaming or streaming spans 16–64 GB. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is a compatibility floor, not a general-purpose target. Before upgrading an existing PC, confirm that its memory is upgradeable and that the capacity and module type you plan to buy are supported.
What RAM does, and why capacity matters
RAM is the computer’s temporary working memory. Apps and files are loaded into it so the computer can access them more quickly than if it had to fetch everything from long-term storage each time. RAM contents are lost when you turn off or restart the computer. Microsoft explains this in its computer memory guide.

Capacity affects how much working data a computer can hold at once. If your usual routine involves several open apps, many browser tabs, a large creative project, or a game alongside streaming software, those simultaneous tasks matter when choosing a configuration. More RAM can help a computer handle more activity at once, but Microsoft’s guidance does not quantify the performance gain from a particular upgrade. Do not treat a larger number as a guaranteed speed increase for every app or PC.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no single capacity that is right for every computer. Microsoft gives different recommendations by workload, and software publishers may set their own requirements. The useful question is not simply “How much RAM does a PC need?” but “How much RAM does this PC need for my software and the way I use it?”

How much RAM do I need?
Use Microsoft’s figures as broad shopping guidance, then check the requirements for the programs you intend to run. The figures below are recommendations or category requirements, not benchmark results. The linked Microsoft pages do not show a publication year for these recommendations.
| Use or category | Microsoft guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| General and student use | 8–16 GB, according to Microsoft’s PC and Laptop Buying Guide. | A range rather than a universal minimum. Consider which apps you run together and whether your needs are likely to grow. |
| Longer-term general use | 8 GB recommended, according to Microsoft’s computer memory guide. | This recommendation is distinct from the same guide’s lower 4 GB figure for basic browsing, documents, and video streaming. |
| Photo or video editing | Around 16 GB, according to Microsoft’s buying guide. | Check the exact creative application and project requirements; the broad recommendation does not establish what every project needs. |
| Gaming or streaming | 16–64 GB, according to Microsoft’s buying guide. | A wide range that reflects differing setups. Check the game and any streaming or recording software you plan to use. |
| Copilot+ PC category | At least 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5, alongside other requirements, according to Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications. | This is a specification for the Copilot+ PC category, not a universal RAM requirement for every computer or AI workload. |
Microsoft’s guidance comes from pages that do not state a publication year. Treat the values as the current recommendations and requirements shown on those pages, not as dated performance findings.
The ranges are useful for narrowing a comparison, but they are not a ranking in which every higher number is automatically the better choice. Start with the software and activities you expect to support, then compare configurations that meet those needs. If two PCs otherwise suit your purpose, RAM capacity and the possibility of upgrading later are both relevant comparison points. A system’s supported limit and memory type still determine whether an upgrade is possible.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep recommendations separate from requirements. Windows 11’s minimum and the Copilot+ PC minimum are specifications for those categories. Microsoft’s figures for general use, editing, and gaming or streaming are shopping guidance. Neither kind of figure establishes a measured speed improvement from moving between capacities.
How to match RAM to your workload
Browsing, documents, and video streaming
For basic browsing, documents, and video streaming, Microsoft Support says to aim for at least 4 GB, while recommending 8 GB for longer-term use. Microsoft’s buying guide gives 8–16 GB for general and student use. These are different pieces of guidance for different contexts: the 4 GB figure should not be read as a recommended universal target for a new general-purpose PC.
If this is your main workload, think about what “basic” means in practice. A PC used for one document and a small number of tabs has a different workload from one used with many tabs, messaging and office apps open together, or several people sharing the same device. The Microsoft range helps frame the decision, but does not specify an exact capacity for each combination of apps.

For a new computer intended to last through changing everyday needs, weigh the 8–16 GB buying-guide range against the applications you expect to use and whether that model can be upgraded. Microsoft separately recommends 8 GB for longer-term use in its memory guide. These recommendations do not promise a particular lifespan or dictate the right amount for every household; they are starting points to compare against your actual software and usage.

Gaming
How much RAM do I need for gaming? Microsoft lists 16–64 GB for gaming or streaming, and notes that 8 GB can suit many tasks while gaming or streaming may call for closer to 16 GB. Read that as broad buying guidance, not a promise that a particular capacity will suit every game, graphics setting, or computer.
Start with the requirements published for the games you play. If you also stream or record while playing, check the requirements for those programs and consider the combined workload rather than the game alone. Microsoft’s broad range does not identify a specific capacity for a particular title or streaming setup.
When comparing gaming configurations, do not use the top of Microsoft’s range as an automatic target. First establish what the specific game and any streaming or recording software require. Then compare the RAM capacity each candidate PC offers and whether its memory can be upgraded if your needs change. Microsoft’s 16–64 GB span covers a broad category; it does not say that every game or player needs 64 GB.
Photo and video editing
Is 16 GB enough for video editing? Microsoft’s buying guide suggests around 16 GB for photo or video editing. That is a useful starting point for comparing configurations, not a guarantee that 16 GB will meet the needs of every editing app or project. Verify the requirements from the publisher of your chosen software and account for the projects and other apps you expect to have open at the same time.
The same qualification applies to photo editing: a broad category recommendation cannot replace the requirements for a specific program. If those requirements call for more than a configuration offers, prioritize the software’s stated needs over a general-use recommendation.

Before choosing a creative-work PC, identify the specific editing application and check its published requirements rather than relying only on the category-level figure. If you expect to keep other programs open while editing, include that combined use in your decision. Microsoft’s “around 16 GB” guidance is not a guarantee for every project, and the sources do not provide a universal project-size threshold at which more RAM is required.
Copilot+ PCs and other AI workloads
Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC category has a minimum of 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5, alongside a qualifying processor/NPU and storage requirements. This is a specification for that category of PC. It does not mean every computer running AI software requires 16 GB, or that RAM alone makes a computer qualify as a Copilot+ PC. Check the complete specifications for the category and the requirements of the software you want to use.
This distinction matters when comparing product descriptions. A Copilot+ PC must meet the stated memory specification as well as the other category requirements. A PC that runs some AI software is not necessarily a Copilot+ PC, and the category minimum should not be applied to all AI programs. For a particular application, its own published requirements are the relevant check.
Is 8 GB of RAM enough?
It can be a reasonable choice for some general-use tasks: Microsoft recommends 8 GB for longer-term use in its memory guide and includes 8–16 GB in its buying guidance for general and student use. But “enough” depends on what you run. Microsoft’s gaming guidance says 8 GB can suit many tasks, while gaming or streaming may call for closer to 16 GB. Its guidance for photo or video editing is around 16 GB.
Use 8 GB as a workload-specific decision, not as a rule that applies to every PC. Check the software requirements and think through the apps you expect to use together. If you are buying a new PC and cannot upgrade its memory later, the available configuration is a longer-term constraint; confirm the machine’s upgrade options before you decide.
Also distinguish 8 GB as a recommendation from 4 GB as a minimum. Windows 11 requires 4 GB, but Microsoft says that its minimum may not be enough for specific apps, features, and added hardware. Meeting the operating system minimum does not establish that a PC will suit your workload or the software you plan to use.

How to check an existing PC before buying a RAM upgrade
Do not choose a memory kit from capacity alone. A PC may have a limit on supported capacity, may require a particular memory generation or physical form factor, may have no open slots, or may use memory that is soldered and not user-upgradeable. Microsoft recommends checking with the PC manufacturer or a retailer for upgrade options in its Windows 11 system requirements guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Decide whether an upgrade addresses your workload. Compare the RAM already in the PC with the needs of the programs and tasks you want to support. Microsoft’s recommendations are broad; they do not establish that a particular upgrade will improve performance by a measured amount.
- Find the exact PC or motherboard model. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the specific machine, rather than assuming that two PCs with similar names share the same memory support.
- Confirm that memory is upgradeable. Check whether it is soldered or otherwise not user-upgradeable, and whether the PC has an available slot or other supported upgrade path. If the manufacturer does not specify an upgrade option, ask the manufacturer or a retailer, as Microsoft advises.
- Verify supported capacity and module type. Confirm the maximum supported capacity, memory generation, and form factor for that exact PC or motherboard. These details must match the system; a kit’s capacity by itself does not establish compatibility.
- Compare your candidate kit with the documentation. Check its capacity and module type against the manufacturer’s stated limits before purchasing. The sources cited here do not establish compatibility for any specific computer model or RAM kit.
- Reconsider the purchase if a requirement cannot be verified. Do not assume a memory kit will work because it fits physically or because another PC accepts it. Get confirmation for the exact system or choose a configuration whose compatibility is documented.
When comparing two PC configurations, compare the workload they must support, their RAM capacity, and their upgrade path. For an existing PC, also compare supported capacity, memory generation and form factor, available slots, and whether the memory is soldered or otherwise not user-upgradeable. Manufacturer documentation for the exact model is the deciding reference for compatibility.
If you are shopping for an upgrade, a compatible RAM upgrade kit, desktop memory kit, or laptop SO-DIMM memory may be the relevant product category—but none of those labels alone confirms a fit. Verify the exact PC’s supported memory generation, form factor, maximum capacity, and upgradeability first. Microsoft notes that some PCs can be upgraded and recommends checking with the manufacturer or a retailer. If any of those details are uncertain, seek confirmation before buying rather than relying on a generic kit description.
For a new PC, the comparison is different: review the RAM capacity included in each configuration and whether the manufacturer says it can be upgraded. A model with a capacity that suits your current workload may still be a poor match if it cannot be upgraded and your software requirements differ from the broad guidance. Conversely, an upgradeable model gives you an option to check later, but does not make an incompatible kit suitable. Confirm the exact machine’s documentation either way.
Common RAM-selection mistakes
- Treating the Windows minimum as a buying target. Windows 11 requires 4 GB RAM, but Microsoft says that is a minimum; specific apps, features, and added hardware may need more. The requirement is not a recommendation that 4 GB is sufficient for general use.
- Applying one workload recommendation to every PC. Microsoft’s figures differ for general use, creative work, gaming and streaming, and Copilot+ PCs. Use the guidance that matches your intended workload, then check exact software requirements.
- Assuming more RAM always means a measurable speed increase. Microsoft’s pages provide recommendations and requirements, not a controlled benchmark or quantified gain for a specific capacity upgrade.
- Buying on capacity alone. Supported capacity, memory generation, form factor, slots, and upgradeability vary by system. Check all of them in the exact PC or motherboard documentation.
- Confusing Copilot+ PC specifications with all AI use. The 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5 figure applies to that PC category and accompanies other requirements. It is not a blanket requirement for every AI app or computer.
- Assuming a familiar-looking model name is enough. Memory compatibility is specific to the exact PC or motherboard. Confirm the model documentation rather than transferring a specification from a similar machine.
- Reading a range as a promise. Microsoft’s gaming and streaming range is 16–64 GB, but it does not determine what a specific game or setup needs. Check the requirements for the software you will actually use.
A practical decision sequence
- Write down your normal workload. Include the apps you use together, not just the one task you perform most often.
- Use the closest Microsoft category as a starting point. General and student use: 8–16 GB. Photo or video editing: around 16 GB. Gaming or streaming: 16–64 GB. Copilot+ PC: at least 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5 plus the other category requirements.
- Check specific requirements. If an app, game, or project has its own requirement, use that rather than treating a broad recommendation as a substitute.
- Check the upgrade path before committing. For an existing machine, confirm upgradeability, supported capacity, memory generation, form factor, and slots with the manufacturer documentation.
- Choose a configuration that fits both the workload and system. A capacity recommendation is useful only if the PC supports the memory type and amount, and the chosen capacity suits the software you plan to run.
- For a new PC, compare the configurations on equal terms. Check the offered RAM capacity against your workload guidance and software requirements, then compare whether the exact model permits an upgrade. Do not treat an upgrade option as proof of compatibility for any particular kit.
- For an upgrade, verify before purchasing. Match the candidate kit’s capacity and module type to the exact machine’s supported capacity, memory generation, form factor, and available upgrade path. Ask the manufacturer or retailer if the documentation leaves a question unresolved.
Conclusion
Choose RAM by matching your expected workload to software requirements and the PC’s supported configuration. Microsoft’s general-use guidance is 8–16 GB, its creative-work guidance is around 16 GB, and its gaming or streaming guidance spans 16–64 GB; the 4 GB Windows 11 minimum is only a compatibility floor. For an upgrade, verify the exact system’s limits and memory type before buying.
