To book a train ticket on the Ixigo app, open Trains, enter your origin, destination and journey date, choose a train and class, add passenger and berth details, then complete payment after signing in with your IRCTC account. Ixigo facilitates the search and booking flow, but Indian Railways issues the ticket through IRCTC. Save the confirmation and electronic reservation slip (ERS) as soon as the booking succeeds.
What you need before you start
Have these items ready before opening the booking screen:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The latest Ixigo app installed and an active internet connection.
- Your IRCTC username and password. Ixigo’s user agreement says train-ticket users are redirected to IRCTC and must provide IRCTC credentials to book.
- Passenger information exactly as it should appear on the reservation: full name, age, sex and berth preference.
- A payment method that you can authenticate on your phone, such as UPI, a card or net banking. The methods displayed can vary by checkout.
- A phone number and email address you can check for booking messages and account verification.
Keep the journey date, station names and preferred class in mind. Station names can be similar, so verify the actual origin and destination shown by the app rather than selecting the first suggestion automatically.

1. Open Trains and enter the journey
- Open Ixigo and select Trains from the home screen.
- In From, type the station where you will board and select the correct station from the results.
- In To, enter your destination and select the matching station.
- Choose the journey date. Check the day and month carefully, especially when booking close to midnight or when a trip crosses a month boundary.
- Submit the search using the button currently shown on screen. App labels and layouts can change between releases, devices and account states, so follow the action label displayed in your version.
The search results are based on the stations and date you submit. If the route looks wrong, return to this screen and correct it before selecting a train; changing details later can require starting the search again.

- Orders are despatched from our UK warehouse next working day.
2. Review trains, timing, availability and fare
Ixigo’s list shows the trains available for the selected route and date. Before opening a booking form, inspect:
- Train name and number, if displayed.
- Departure and arrival times and the journey duration shown for your stations.
- Whether the train actually starts at your origin or reaches it later in its route.
- Available classes, such as Sleeper or an AC class.
- Availability status for the class you want.
- The displayed fare and any service or convenience charges included in the checkout summary.
The official IRCTC “Book E-Ticket” guide describes the reservation flow as exposing route and timing information, class availability and fare before booking. Availability can change while you are completing the form, so treat the result as a live status rather than a guarantee of a berth until payment and ticket issuance succeed.
3. Select a train and class
- Tap the train that fits your timing and route.
- Choose the class you want, for example Sleeper or an available AC class.
- Read the fare and availability for that specific class, not just the lowest fare shown for the train.
- Continue to passenger details using the button shown by the app.
A class selection affects both the accommodation and the fare. If your first choice is unavailable, go back to the train list and check another class or train rather than assuming the app will automatically move you to a different option.
4. Enter passenger information and berth preference
On the reservation form, enter each traveller’s details as requested. The IRCTC guide identifies passenger name, age, sex and berth preference as reservation fields.
- Enter the passenger’s name with the spelling you intend to use for the journey.
- Provide the correct age and sex for each passenger.
- Select a berth preference if the form offers one, such as lower, middle, upper, side lower or side upper.
- Add every passenger who should be included on the same booking, following the app’s current passenger limit and form rules.
- Review the list before proceeding. Fix a spelling, age, sex or preference while you are still on the form rather than relying on a later edit.
A berth preference is a request, not a promise. Indian Railways controls the final allotment, and Ixigo states that it cannot guarantee a particular berth. The confirmed coach and berth, when allotted, are shown in the ticket details issued after booking.

5. Check the journey summary before signing in
Use the review screen as a deliberate error check. Confirm all of the following:
- Origin and destination stations.
- Journey date and selected train.
- Class and availability status.
- Passenger names, ages and sex.
- Berth preferences.
- Base fare plus every service or convenience charge displayed.
- Contact details associated with the booking.
Do not continue if any item is wrong. A successful payment for the wrong station, date or passenger information can create a cancellation problem and additional charges.

6. Sign in to IRCTC when Ixigo redirects you
Ixigo is a facilitator for searching and booking; its user agreement states that train tickets are issued through Indian Railways and that the user is redirected to the IRCTC website or application. When the IRCTC sign-in screen appears:
- Enter your IRCTC username and password.
- Complete any verification step shown by IRCTC.
- Check that the booking summary still shows the intended train, date, class and passengers.
- Continue only when the account and contact details are correct.
Therefore, an IRCTC login is required for an Ixigo train booking. An Ixigo account alone does not replace the IRCTC credentials required to issue the ticket.
7. Choose a payment method and pay
Select one of the payment methods offered on the checkout screen. IRCTC’s payment infrastructure documents card, UPI and net-banking options; the exact choices visible in an Ixigo checkout may differ according to the current integration and your transaction.

- Confirm the final amount, including displayed service or convenience charges.
- Select UPI, card, net banking or another method shown by the checkout.
- Complete the bank, card or UPI authentication without closing the payment screen.
- Wait for the booking result. Do not press Pay repeatedly while the first transaction is still processing.
Ixigo states that its payment-gateway or service fee charged at booking is non-refundable. Other cancellation deductions depend on the ticket type, quota and time of cancellation, so read the amount breakdown before authorising payment.

After a successful transaction, wait for the confirmation page rather than relying only on a bank debit notification. Record the booking reference and open the booked-ticket details. The IRCTC “Book E-Ticket” guide says a successful booking displays confirmation details and provides an option to print or retrieve the electronic reservation slip (ERS) from booked tickets.
- Save the confirmation reference in a secure note or email it to yourself.
- Retrieve the ERS from the booked-tickets area and keep it available offline if possible.
- Check the issued train, date, passenger list, class and any allotted coach or berth.
- Keep the same contact details and account access available until the journey is complete.
If the bank shows a debit but no ticket confirmation appears, do not immediately make a second booking. First check the booked-tickets area and the payment status, then use the recovery options described below.
How fares and fees appear
The amount shown at the final review is more than the basic railway fare when Ixigo service or convenience charges apply. The amount can vary with the train, class, passenger details and booking parameters. Because the app and checkout can change, use the live total presented immediately before payment as the authoritative amount for that booking.
| Amount or status | What to check |
|---|---|
| Railway fare | Matches the selected train, class and passenger count. |
| Ixigo service or convenience charge | Appears in the checkout breakdown; Ixigo says its payment-gateway/service fee is non-refundable. |
| Total payable | Is the final figure you authorise through UPI, card, net banking or another displayed method. |
| Cancellation deduction | Depends on ticket type, quota and the time of cancellation under the applicable railway rules. |
What to do if payment fails or the status is unclear
Payment failed before a ticket was issued
Check the Ixigo or IRCTC booking status before trying again. IRCTC iPay describes an AutoPay or AutoDebit process in which a hold is placed on the payment instrument and released if the booking fails; if the booking succeeds, the amount is debited. This behaviour is an IRCTC payment feature and may not appear identically in every Ixigo checkout.

If your bank or UPI app shows a temporary hold, avoid creating duplicate bookings until the status is resolved. Keep the transaction reference and the time of payment in case the payment provider or booking support asks for them.
Payment succeeded but confirmation did not appear
Look in booked tickets and refresh the status after allowing the payment flow to finish. IRCTC iPay also documents a Resume/Retry Booking feature for certain same-day payment-confirmation failures. It may not be offered in every Ixigo checkout, so use it only if the current screen presents that option and follow the instructions shown there.
Do not treat a bank debit alone as proof that a ticket was issued. Travel only with a booking that has a valid confirmation and ERS.
The app shows no trains or the expected class is unavailable
- Recheck the exact origin and destination stations.
- Confirm the journey date and search again.
- Open other trains in the results and inspect their class availability.
- Try a different class only after checking its fare and availability.
A blank result or unavailable class is not a reason to select a different station accidentally. Correct the search inputs first.

Ixigo’s user agreement states that a ticket booked through Ixigo can be cancelled only before chart preparation. IRCTC’s cancellation guidance likewise allows online cancellation of e-tickets until chart preparation. After the chart is prepared, normal online cancellation is unavailable; an online Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) may be required under railway rules for an eligible case.
Best Value
- Ghost Train to the Eastern Star On the Tracks of the Great Railway Bazaar
Before chart preparation
- Open Ixigo and go to your booked train tickets.
- Select the booking you want to cancel.
- Choose the cancellation action currently shown and review the passengers or segments selected.
- Read the cancellation amount and refund breakdown before confirming.
- Submit the cancellation and retain the cancellation reference.
Cancellation charges vary according to ticket type, quota and the time of cancellation. The Ixigo payment-gateway or service fee charged at booking is non-refundable, so the refunded amount may be lower than the original total even when the railway fare is otherwise refundable.
After chart preparation
Normal cancellation through the booking flow is no longer available after chart preparation. If your situation falls under a railway rule that permits a claim, IRCTC’s guidance points to an online TDR process. Eligibility and deductions depend on the applicable railway conditions; submit only the reason and details that accurately describe what happened.
Ixigo or the official IRCTC app: which flow fits?
Both routes are governed by Indian Railways and IRCTC ticketing rules. The practical difference is where you begin the search and which service displays the booking interface.
| Decision point | Ixigo app | Official IRCTC app or website |
|---|---|---|
| Search interface | Ixigo provides its own train-search and trip-planning interface. | Search and reservation begin directly in the IRCTC environment. |
| Ticket issuance | Redirects or hands the booking into IRCTC; Indian Railways issues the ticket. | Handled directly by IRCTC. |
| IRCTC credentials | Required when the flow reaches IRCTC. | Required for the account used to reserve the ticket. |
| Fees displayed | Review Ixigo’s live fare, service and convenience-charge breakdown before payment. | Review the charges shown by IRCTC’s checkout. |
| Payment methods | Use the methods presented in the current checkout; availability can vary. | IRCTC documents card, UPI and net-banking options through its payment infrastructure. |
| Cancellation rules | IRCTC and railway rules govern cancellation; Ixigo says cancellation is possible only before chart preparation through its flow. | IRCTC’s online e-ticket cancellation and TDR rules apply directly. |
| Support responsibility | Ixigo can facilitate the booking interface, while ticket issuance, charting and railway rules remain with IRCTC and Indian Railways. | IRCTC is the direct booking platform for the reservation. |
Choose the interface you find easier to search, but do not expect Ixigo to override IRCTC availability, berth allotment, chart preparation or railway cancellation rules.
Quick Recap
Final pre-payment checklist
- Correct origin and destination stations selected from the app’s station list.
- Correct journey date and train.
- Desired class selected, with current availability checked.
- Passenger names, ages and sex entered accurately.
- Berth preferences reviewed as requests rather than guarantees.
- IRCTC username and password available for the redirect.
- Fare, Ixigo service or convenience charges and final total checked.
- Payment method ready and authentication device accessible.
- Plan to retrieve the confirmation and ERS immediately after success.
Key points to remember
- Ixigo starts the search, but the train ticket is issued through IRCTC and Indian Railways.
- An IRCTC login is required when Ixigo redirects into the reservation flow.
- Berth preferences are requests; Indian Railways controls the final allotment.
- Use the live checkout total because fees vary by booking parameters.
- Cancel online before chart preparation. After chart preparation, normal cancellation is unavailable and an eligible case may require an online TDR.
- Keep the confirmation and ERS; a payment debit without a ticket confirmation is not proof of a valid reservation.
