You can block traffic to standard STUN ports or restrict UDP at your router, but neither is a universal way to disable WebRTC. A port rule may not catch every service, while blocking UDP more broadly can disrupt other network activity. Choose the narrowest control that meets your goal, then test the specific apps you rely on.
What STUN and ICE do in WebRTC
WebRTC applications use network traversal techniques to establish connections through routers and firewalls. STUN helps an endpoint discover the address and port that its router exposes to the internet, check connectivity, and maintain NAT bindings. It is a tool used by other protocols, not a complete traversal solution by itself; see the IETF’s RFC 8489.

ICE gathers and tests possible transport addresses, using STUN and TURN to find a workable route. TURN can relay traffic when a direct path is not available. The IETF describes this process in RFC 8445.

Choose the scope of the restriction
| Approach | Scope | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Block standard STUN ports | Traffic matching the specified ports and protocol | Narrower than blocking UDP, but not a guaranteed WebRTC block. These are STUN defaults, not a complete port list for every service. |
| Block or restrict UDP | Potentially many UDP-based connections on the affected device or network | May prevent some direct WebRTC paths and affect unrelated apps. Some WebRTC implementations can use TCP-based TURN, but successful fallback depends on the service and its reachable relays. |
| Limit one app or device | Only if the app, device, or router provides a suitable control | Can reduce the effect on other household devices, but the available settings and results vary. |
Block standard STUN ports at the router
RFC 8489 specifies default STUN ports: 3478 for UDP and TCP, and 5349 for TLS and DTLS. These defaults are not a universal WebRTC port map. Services may use other ports or connection methods, so blocking these ports can restrict some STUN traffic without stopping all WebRTC sessions.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Open your router’s administration interface and look for firewall, access-control, or traffic-filtering rules. Menu names and capabilities vary by model and firmware.
- If the router supports port-based rules, create a rule for the specific device or network scope you intend to restrict. For a rule intended to match standard STUN defaults, account for UDP and TCP on port 3478 and TLS/DTLS on port 5349, if the interface supports those protocol choices.
- Apply the rule and test the apps and devices that matter to you. Check both whether the unwanted traffic or behavior is reduced and whether calls still connect.
- If the result is not what you need, remove or revise the rule rather than expanding it blindly; a broader restriction can affect more than WebRTC.
Understand the trade-off in blocking UDP
Blocking UDP is broader than blocking traffic on standard STUN ports. It can interfere with direct connectivity for WebRTC and other applications. The IETF’s RFC 8835 requires WebRTC implementations to support TURN over TCP and TURN over TLS over TCP for networks that block all UDP. That requirement does not ensure that a particular app has a reachable relay or will connect successfully after UDP is blocked.
For that reason, use a UDP restriction only when you are prepared to test the affected services and accept possible connectivity failures. A successful call in one app does not establish that every other WebRTC app will behave the same way.

Limit only the app or device you mean to restrict
If the goal is to limit one application or a single device, first check for controls in that app, on the device, or in your router. Apply a rule to the narrowest available scope and verify the result with the specific service. Router controls and app behavior differ, so there is no menu path or firewall rule that can be guaranteed across home networks.
Browser WebRTC implementations are required to implement ICE, but the IETF’s RFC 8827 does not establish a common user-facing setting for disabling ICE across browsers and apps. Do not assume one browser setting or router rule will turn off WebRTC everywhere.

Check the result and recover if something stops working
- Test the intended calling or conferencing app, including making and receiving a call if both are important.
- Check other devices and services that use the affected network scope; a router-wide rule can have effects beyond the device you had in mind.
- If an app cannot connect, disable or narrow the rule and test again. The failure may reflect a blocked connection path or a service that cannot use an available fallback.
- Keep the rule only if the behavior meets your goal without breaking services you need.
