If you missed Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, play it first: it is the direct predecessor to Shadow of War and the closest way to stay in the same story world. If you have already played it, choose your next game by what you want to keep—stealth and melee action, a broader historical RPG, naval combat, or timing-based counters. None of the alternatives listed here is established as a replacement for Shadow of War’s Nemesis system.
Choose by what you want from Shadow of War
| If you want… | Try… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| The same story world and an earlier chapter | Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor | It is the direct predecessor to Shadow of War. Warner Bros. Games describes the latter as its sequel, and Xbox’s listing identifies Talion’s story and the origins of the Rings of Power. |
| Open-world stealth and melee action in another setting | Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut | PlayStation describes an open-world action adventure with katana and ranged combat, stealth, and exploration. |
| A broad historical action-RPG | Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | Ubisoft positions it as an RPG with advanced RPG mechanics and lists multiple platforms and storefronts. |
| Historical exploration and naval combat | Assassin’s Creed Odyssey | PlayStation highlights ship customization and naval combat. |
| Timing-based counter combat | Batman: Arkham series | PC Gamer characterizes Shadow of War’s combat as being in the Arkham mould, with timed counters and an expanding set of moves and powers. That is a combat comparison, not confirmation that a particular Arkham edition is available on your platform. |
Best games to play after Shadow of War
1. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor — the best next step if you missed it
This is the clearest recommendation for players who want more of the same world, rather than a game that merely resembles one part of Shadow of War. The official Warner Bros. Games sequel page establishes the relationship between the games, while Xbox’s game listing describes Talion’s chronicle and the origins of the Rings of Power.

Play it if you have not experienced the earlier chapter and want the series’ Middle-earth setting. If you already completed it, move on to a different setting rather than treating a replay as the obvious follow-up.
2. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut — for stealth, exploration, and direct melee combat
PlayStation’s official page describes an open-world action adventure set in feudal Japan, combining katana and ranged combat with stealth tactics and exploration. It makes sense if you want to roam a different open world while switching between direct fighting and stealth.
#1 Best Overall
- PLAY THE DEFINITIVE EDITION OF MIDDLE-EARTH: SHADOW OF WAR FROM THE AWARD-WINNING MONOLITH STUDIOS
- Winner of over 60 awards and nominations, conquer Mordor for the Bright Lord and enjoy 50+ hours of story content, 3 playable characters and the expansive Nemesis System.
- The Definitive Edition includes all DLC Slaughter Tribe Nemesis Expansion Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansion Blade of Galadriel Story Expansion Desolation of Mordor Story Expansion
It is an adjacent recommendation, not a substitute for the Nemesis system or the Middle-earth setting. The page lists PS4 and PS5 editions as well as a Blu-ray version; check your region and platform before choosing a listing.
3. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla — for a larger historical action-RPG
Ubisoft describes Valhalla as using advanced RPG mechanics and lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Amazon Luna, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Ubisoft+. It is worth considering if a historical setting and a broader role-playing adventure matter more to you than staying in a fantasy world.
Rank #2
- Immerse yourself in the epic scale of Middle-Earth as you forge a new ring and siege epic fortresses to face the dark lord and Nazgul.
- Experience a richer and more personal world full of new enemy types, stronger personalities and deeper stories - anyone you face can now evolve from a lowly soldier to a mighty overlord.
- Go behind enemy lines and use strategy, cunning or brute force to conquer Sauron' s fortresses and turn them against him.
The available description does not establish it as a close match for Shadow of War’s Nemesis system or prove that its combat feels the same. Treat it as a genre-adjacent choice, not a one-for-one replacement.
4. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey — for ship customization and naval play
If you want a historical action-adventure with a substantial ship-based element, PlayStation’s Odyssey page describes customizing a ship and recruiting crew members with distinct perks for naval combat. That is a different appeal from Shadow of War’s army and fortress loop, so choose it for the seafaring angle rather than for a similar enemy-rivalry system.

- PLAY THE DEFINITIVE EDITION OF MIDDLE-EARTH: SHADOW OF WAR FROM THE AWARD-WINNING MONOLITH STUDIOS. Winner of over 60 awards and nominations, conquer Mordor for the Bright Lord and enjoy 50+ hours of story content, 3 playable characters and the expansive Nemesis System. The Definitive Edition includes all DLC Slaughter Tribe Nemesis Expansion Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansion Blade of Galadriel Story Expansion Desolation of Mordor Story Expansion
5. Batman: Arkham — for the counter-combat rhythm
PC Gamer’s review of Shadow of War describes its combat as being in the Arkham mould, with timing-based counters and a growing range of moves and powers. That comparison makes the Arkham series a sensible direction if the fighting rhythm was your favorite part of the game.
The source does not verify a specific Arkham collection, current platform support, or regional availability. Confirm the edition and platform you want before looking for a purchase listing.

- A MONUMENTAL STORY: Immerse yourself in the epic scale of Middle-earth as you forge a new ring and siege epic fortresses to face the Dark Lord and Nazgul.
- NEMESIS SYSTEM EVOLVED: Experience a richer and more personal world full of new enemy types, stronger personalities and deeper stories – anyone you face can now evolve from a lowly Soldier to a mighty Overlord. Personal Nemesis or Ally.
- TURN MORDOR AGAINST SAURON: Go behind enemy lines and use strategy, cunning or brute force to conquer Sauron’s fortresses and turn them against him.
- IN MIDDLE-EARTH: SHADOW OF WAR, NOTHING WILL BE FORGOTTEN.
Can another game replace Shadow of War’s Nemesis system?
These recommendations do not establish an equivalent to the Nemesis system. The reviewed coverage identifies Nemesis as a central feature of Shadow of War, but does not substantiate a direct counterpart in the other games here. If emergent rivalries are the feature you most want to keep, the evidence supports returning to the Middle-earth series—not promising that another franchise recreates that experience.
