To block adult content on a Mac, use Screen Time’s built-in website filtering: choose Limit Adult Websites to restrict many adult sites, or Approved Websites Only to allow access only to sites you approve. These settings reduce access but are not a guarantee that every adult site will be blocked.
Choose the right website restriction
Screen Time offers two useful levels of website filtering. The first applies an automatic filter that you can customize; the second uses an explicit allow-list.

Apple documents both options in its Screen Time website-restriction settings and Mac Screen Time guide. Labels or paths can vary somewhat by macOS version.
Set up filtering on your Mac account
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Screen Time.
- Open Apps & Websites, then select Restrictions.
- Under Websites, select Filtering.
- Choose Limit Adult Websites or Approved Websites Only, depending on the level of restriction you want.
With Limit Adult Websites, use the available allowed and restricted lists to make exceptions for particular sites. With Approved Websites Only, add the destinations that should remain accessible.

Manage a child’s restrictions through Family Sharing
A parent or guardian can manage a child’s website restrictions from the family settings rather than configuring only the Mac in front of them. Apple’s instructions direct the parent or guardian to System Settings > Family, select the child, then open Apps & Websites > Restrictions. The available choices include unrestricted access, limiting detected adult websites, and allowing approved websites only.
Apple states that the child-safety features described on its family apps-and-websites guidance require version 27 or later across family devices. Defaults can vary according to the child’s age and country or region, so check Apple’s current instructions against the software installed on the family’s devices.

Know what the filter can—and cannot—promise
Apple describes the automatic option as limiting access to “many adult websites” and also refers to “detected adult websites.” That wording does not promise comprehensive detection. The Apple documentation cited here provides no independent blocking-rate measurement or evidence that the setting cannot be bypassed. Treat Screen Time as a restriction that can reduce access, not as guaranteed universal blocking.

When device management is the better route
For an organization managing enrolled Apple devices, device-management configuration offers a separate way to apply content-filter policies. Apple’s content-filtering deployment guidance covers adult-content filtering, URL allow and deny lists, and configurations for specific sites. Its web content filter device-management settings describe the relevant management payload.
Apple points organizations with complex or legally mandated filtering needs toward options such as a global HTTP proxy or advanced content-filtering options from a third-party filtering app. Those approaches involve policy and device administration beyond the ordinary Screen Time setting; the appropriate configuration depends on the organization’s requirements.
