You can keep shows on a USB stick only when you have compatible video files you’re entitled to store and play. Downloads made inside Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney+ are controlled by those services’ apps; they aren’t ordinary files you can copy to a flash drive. If your goal is to watch on a trip, check the show’s official download option and save it in the supported app on the device you’ll carry.
Can you put streaming downloads on a USB stick?
Usually, no. A streaming app’s offline download is intended for playback within that service’s app on supported devices. It should not be treated as a transferable video file, and copying app data to removable storage does not turn it into one.

A USB stick makes sense only for video files you are legally entitled to store and play, in a format your playback device supports. A file being technically copyable does not itself establish permission to copy it. Because file size, format, and device compatibility vary, there is no universal capacity recommendation.

How to check whether a show can be downloaded for a trip
- Open the service’s app on the device you will bring. Look for a download icon or a download option on the show or episode page. A title’s presence in the streaming catalog does not guarantee it can be downloaded.
- Check the exact title and episodes. Download eligibility can vary because of rights or other factors. Netflix says some titles are unavailable for download and provides country-specific guidance in its download availability help page.
- Confirm your plan and device qualify. Requirements differ by service, plan, device, and country. Verify them in the service’s current help pages before relying on offline playback.
- Download while you have reliable internet. Complete the download in the official app, then check that the episode appears in its downloads area. If practical, test playback before leaving.
- Make room and check app settings. Downloads consume device storage. Some services offer options to manage or replace watched episodes; these may depend on plan eligibility.

Choose the right setup for your travel device
If you’ll watch on a phone or tablet
Download eligible episodes inside the relevant service app on that device. Check that the device and plan are supported, and make sure there is enough free storage. If you use Netflix Smart Downloads, remember that it may replace a watched episode with the next one; its availability depends on plan.
If you’ll watch on a laptop or television
Do not assume that a download available on a phone is also available on a computer or TV. Prime Video’s UK guidance lists its macOS and Windows 10/11 apps and describes certain supported TV setups for offline playback, while excluding Chromecast and AirPlay playback. Disney+’s cited US guidance says downloads are not available on computers or TV-connected devices. Confirm the current rules for your service, country, and specific device before travelling.

If you have transferable video files
Use a flash drive only if the files are lawful to store and play, and your television, computer, or media player supports both the file format and USB playback. Check the device’s own instructions for supported formats and storage systems. Keep a separate copy if the files matter; a USB stick is portable storage, not a backup by itself.

Before you leave
- Confirm each show and episode has an official download option in your country.
- Check plan and device eligibility, especially if travelling with a computer or planning to connect to a TV.
- Download episodes in the service app on the device you will carry, then confirm they appear in its downloads area.
- For a USB stick, use only compatible video files you are entitled to store and play—not files extracted from a streaming app.
