There isn’t one iPhone or iPad setting that removes every inappropriate ad. Use Screen Time to control which apps and websites your child can access, Safari’s pop-up setting to handle browser pop-ups, and—if needed—a separate Safari content blocker or DNS-filtering app. Ads built into a game or other app may require blocking or removing that app instead.
Choose the control that matches where the ad appears

Apple documents Screen Time as a way to manage app and website access, restrictions, and approvals—not as a tool that selectively removes ads from every third-party app. Apple’s child-safety guide describes website filtering, including limiting detected adult websites or allowing only approved websites. These controls restrict access; they do not promise to remove ads on sites a child can visit.

Set up Screen Time restrictions for your child
Menu labels can vary by iOS or iPadOS version. Apple’s current family guidance also notes features that require iOS or iPadOS 27, so check the child’s installed version if a label or option differs.

- On the parent’s device, open Settings > Family and select the child.
- Open Apps & Websites and review the available controls for blocking or allowing specific apps and sites.
- Open Restrictions to review app age limits and website filtering. Choose the level that fits your child, or allow only approved websites if you want a more limited list of destinations.
- Consider enabling Ask to Buy for eligible app downloads and purchases, and Ask to Browse or approved-site access where available, to add a review step for new apps or website access.

Block pop-ups in Safari
- On the child’s device, open Settings > Apps > Safari.
- Turn on Safari’s pop-up blocking setting.
This setting targets pop-up windows; it is not a general ad-removal switch. Don’t tap suspicious prize claims, security warnings, or fake update prompts. Apple warns that some pop-ups imitate trusted companies to trick people into sharing personal or financial information. See Apple’s guidance on blocking pop-up ads and windows in Safari.
If the ad is inside a game or another app
Screen Time can limit or block access to the app, and app age limits can help restrict which apps are available. But the Apple guidance cited here does not describe a built-in setting that removes only the ad placements inside an otherwise permitted app.

- Check the app’s age rating and its own parental, privacy, or advertising settings.
- If its ads are unsuitable and there is no effective in-app control, block or remove the app.
- Use download approval where available to review future app requests before installation.
What Safari blockers and DNS filters can—and can’t—do
Safari content-blocker extensions
These are separate extensions, not a Screen Time setting. Apple’s developer documentation explains that content blockers provide rules to Safari. Their scope is Safari; the documentation does not establish that they remove ads inside third-party apps or block every ad on every site. See Apple’s content-blocker documentation.
DNS-filtering apps
A DNS-filtering product may advertise filtering beyond Safari, but its actual coverage depends on its implementation and how the app or website delivers ads. The App Store listing for AdGuard Ad Blocker for Safari, for example, is a vendor description, not independent evidence of complete coverage. No blocker should be treated as a guarantee that all inappropriate ads will disappear.
