Partly, but not reliably across every app, website, and device. Parental controls can reduce exposure in services they cover, but their filters are not a universal ad blocker. Google says its child-account ad protections apply to Google services, while children may still see ads from other providers on third-party sites and apps. Check the specific control’s documented coverage and report unsuitable ads when the service provides that option.
What parental controls can—and can’t—do to ads
Some parental controls restrict websites or apps, filter content, or apply ad policies within a particular platform. Those functions are not interchangeable with blocking every advertisement. A filter may limit access to a site without inspecting ads embedded in an app, and an ad-personalization setting does not by itself remove ads.

For children under 13, or the applicable age in their country, Google says it strives to label ads and filter ads on Google services to limit those unsuitable for younger audiences. Google also says it does not serve personalized ads to those children on its services. These are scoped safeguards, not a promise that all ads will be removed. Why a child may still see an inappropriate ad
An ad can come from a company other than the service or parental-control provider. Google notes that children may see ads on non-Google sites and apps, where non-Google providers may serve them. A control that applies to Google services therefore cannot be assumed to govern advertising across the wider web or every third-party app. Google’s child privacy policy

Filters can also miss content. Google’s Family Link FAQ says: “Family Link does not block inappropriate content, but the settings within provide you with filtering options.” It warns that explicit, graphic, or otherwise unwanted content may get through. Family Link FAQ
How to assess a parental-control feature
Before relying on a setting to prevent inappropriate ads, check what it actually controls. Look for documentation that names the relevant service, operating system, and type of content rather than assuming that a general “filter” also blocks advertisements.

- Coverage: Does it name the browser or apps where the child saw ads, or claim broader device coverage?
- Platform support: Does the feature work on the child’s device and operating system? A parent’s phone app alone does not establish coverage on the child’s device.
- Control type: Is it a website restriction, app limit, content filter, ad-personalization setting, reporting tool, or documented ad blocker? These functions do different things.
- Account and age scope: Does the stated protection apply to the child’s account category and location?
- Known limits: Does the provider disclose that unsuitable content can still pass through?
For example, Microsoft describes its app and game filters as working on Windows and Xbox; that description does not establish that those filters block ads. Microsoft Family Safety filter support

- Identify where it appeared. Note the app, website, browser, and device. That helps distinguish an ad shown within a platform’s own service from one served by a third party.
- Review the relevant service’s settings. Check its reporting and restriction options, then confirm the parental-control provider documents support for that app and device.
- Report the ad where possible. Google’s guidance says: “If, however, your child sees an inappropriate ad, report the ad and we’ll review it.” Google’s ad guidance
- Adjust expectations and access. If the ad appeared in an app outside the control’s documented coverage, consider whether restricting that app or site is appropriate. Do not treat screen-time limits, app approval, website filters, or disabling ad personalization as proof that ads are blocked.
What the available evidence establishes
Official platform documentation supports a limited conclusion: controls may reduce some exposure in covered services, but they are not guaranteed to stop inappropriate advertising everywhere. The cited documentation does not establish independent, comparative effectiveness for third-party parental-control apps, nor does it establish how reliably DNS or network filters block in-app ads. A specific product should be judged on its documented ad-specific coverage and limitations, not on the general label “parental control.” Google’s Family Link parent disclosure also cautions that SafeSearch, Chrome website restrictions, and Play Store filters can limit inappropriate content but are not perfect.
