Use three actions together: mute the account or chat to stop immediate exposure, block it to prevent further contact, and report the specific racist message, clip, profile or voice segment so moderators can review evidence. Then restrict who can message, invite or comment, and add keyword or sensitive-content filters as a second layer. Filters alone miss coded language, images and audio, while a report without blocking leaves you exposed during review.
What to do first when racist content appears
Do not argue with the poster or repeat the slur in a public reply. Retaliation can expose you to more abuse, amplify the material and make a later moderation review harder to understand. Work in this order:

- Mute the source. Mute the player, account, conversation or server so its voice, messages or posts stop appearing immediately. Muting is local protection; it does not notify the other person.
- Block the source. Blocking prevents direct messages, invitations or other interaction where the service supports it. A block may not remove a copied clip or a post shared by another account, so check the individual item as well.
- Report the exact item. Select the message, post, image, video, profile, broadcast or voice segment that contains the abuse. Choose hate speech, harassment or the closest race-based abuse category, and include a short factual explanation.
- Leave or restrict the space. Exit a server, group, gaming clan or thread that repeatedly circulates racist material. If you need to remain, mute the space and limit membership, messages and invitations to people you trust.
- Save evidence safely. Record the URL or message link, username or gamertag, date and time, and a screenshot or short clip only if doing so will not expose you to more abuse. Submit it through the platform’s reporting flow rather than reposting it.
If a post threatens imminent violence, publishes someone’s personal information, or targets a child, use the platform’s urgent safety route and contact local law enforcement or an appropriate safeguarding service. Preserve the original link and time details for investigators.

Mute, block, filter and report: what each control actually does

Use account-level controls and item-level reports together. Reporting only a gamertag or profile can leave the actual message, clip or broadcast unreviewed; reporting the offending item gives moderators the material and context.

PlayStation: report messages, profiles, media and PS5 voice chat
PlayStation defines hate speech as abuse involving prejudice, hostility or violence toward a person or group based on protected characteristics, including race, ethnicity and national origin. Its definition also covers threatening verbal or written content and discriminatory text, images or video.
Report a text, image, video, profile or broadcast on PS5
- Open Game Base or the offending player’s profile.
- Highlight the specific message or content item. For a profile report, open the profile, but report the individual message or media as well when possible.
- Choose Report, select the reason that most closely matches hate speech or harassment, and follow the prompts.
- At the end of the flow, choose the option to block the player if you have not already done so.
PlayStation says reports are reviewed by human moderators. Reports can cover messages, profiles, screenshots, videos, broadcasts, comments and other supported content. If the racist material appears inside a game rather than in PlayStation’s own messaging layer, use the game’s in-game report tool too; the game publisher may control that chat and its sanctions.
Include PS5 voice-chat evidence
For PS5 voice chat, a report can include a 40-second clip from the last five minutes of conversation. Submit the clip that contains the abuse and identify the speaker or session in the description. Voice capture is time-limited, so stop and report promptly rather than waiting until the session ends.
Xbox: mute, block and report the offending content
Xbox Community Standards explicitly recommend muting, blocking and reporting inappropriate players and content. Apply all three when a racist message, image, clip or voice interaction appears.

Report the item, not only the gamertag
- Open the offending message, profile entry or content item from your notifications, conversation or recent-player list.
- Select Report and choose the closest hate-speech, harassment or abusive-content category.
- Add the relevant context without quoting the slur in a public post. Identify whether it was text, an image, a video or voice behavior.
- Mute the player and block the account from the same profile or player-options menu.
A gamertag report may trigger only a gamertag review. Always report the offending message or content item separately when the interface offers that option. If the behavior occurred in a specific game, submit that game’s report as well.
What Xbox’s enforcement figure means
Microsoft Xbox reported that from January through June 2024, its AI-enabled tools combined with human expertise prevented 19 million pieces of content that violated Xbox Community Standards from reaching players across text, image and video. That is a platform-reported prevention total for that six-month period, not a guarantee that every report is removed or that voice and coded abuse are detected.
Discord: handle messages, accounts and recurring server abuse
Discord’s policy explainer dated August 29, 2025, says hateful conduct and hate speech are not allowed. It describes hate speech as expression that degrades, vilifies or dehumanizes people, incites hostility toward groups, or promotes harm based on protected characteristics.

Report a Discord message or account
- Use the message’s options menu and choose Discord’s in-app reporting flow for the specific message.
- Choose the category for hateful conduct or harassment and provide concise context, including whether the behavior is repeated or coordinated.
- If the account itself is involved, report the account as well, then block or mute it so further direct contact stops.
- Notify server moderators when they can remove the post, restrict the member or preserve relevant logs.
When a server repeatedly shares racist material, leave it or mute it rather than continuing to monitor the abuse. Discord recommends reporting prohibited conduct and considering removal from the space. Server moderation and Discord’s platform enforcement are separate layers, so use both when appropriate.

X: report posts and direct messages, then reduce contact
X prohibits hateful conduct aimed at individuals or groups because of protected characteristics and applies the rule to posts and direct messages.
- Open the post or direct message’s menu and select Report.
- Choose the hateful-conduct or harassment reason that best describes the racist content and submit the report.
- Block the account to stop direct contact, and mute it if you need to remove remaining posts or notifications from your view without alerting the account.
- Review reply, mention and sensitive-content settings and tighten them to friends or approved users where those controls are available.
Report each materially different post or message when it supplies new evidence, especially if the account is posting a campaign rather than one isolated item. Do not quote the slur in a reply; the original post or message is the evidence.
Set privacy and discovery controls for less exposure
Names and menu locations vary by platform, device, account age and country, but the useful settings are consistent. Check the service’s privacy, safety or communication section and set the most restrictive option that still lets you play with people you trust.

- Friend and follow requests: require approval instead of accepting requests automatically.
- Party and group invitations: restrict invitations to friends, current teammates or a private list.
- Replies, mentions and comments: limit who can address your posts and turn off notifications from unknown accounts.
- Voice chat: use party-only or friends-only channels when public voice is not necessary, and mute individual players as soon as abuse starts.
- Server and group membership: leave spaces with a pattern of racist content; ask moderators to lock channels or remove repeat offenders.
- Sensitive-content and hidden-word tools: add common slurs and variants you personally encounter, while recognizing that these tools are only a supplement.
Keep a short private list of terms you want hidden rather than publishing a list of slurs. Public lists can teach bad actors new spellings and can expose other readers to the language you are trying to avoid.

Why filters miss racist gaming content
Automated filters generally match text patterns, but racist abuse can arrive as a screenshot, meme, edited video, voice line or deliberately misspelled phrase. Coded language changes quickly, and an aggressive filter can also hide legitimate discussions about racism, moderation or history. For that reason, keyword and sensitive-content controls reduce exposure but cannot replace blocking and reporting.
Enforcement speed is uneven. In OBERAXE’s 2024 annual monitoring report, the share of reported hate-speech content removed within one week was 7% for Instagram, 5% for Facebook, 5% for TikTok, 3% for X and 1% for YouTube under that report’s sample and methodology. These percentages are not universal platform scores, do not describe every report, and should not be used to predict the outcome of an individual case.
Build a safe evidence record
Capture only what is needed
- Save the original URL or message link, not just a cropped screenshot.
- Record the username, gamertag or server name exactly as displayed.
- Note the date, time and your time zone, plus the game, channel or thread where it occurred.
- Capture the smallest screenshot or clip that establishes the violation. Blur unrelated usernames or personal information before sharing it outside the reporting form.
- For voice incidents, include the platform’s available clip and identify the approximate point in the recording.
Do not download suspicious files, click links sent by an abusive account, or keep engaging to collect more evidence. If preserving evidence would prolong contact, block first and report with the information already available.
Describe patterns without amplifying slurs
Use factual language such as “repeated race-based insults in team voice chat” or “image targeting a named ethnic group.” Mention threats, doxxing, coordinated behavior and repeat accounts. Quote the exact slur only inside a private platform form when it is necessary for classification; never repost it for attention.
When and how to escalate a credible threat
Platform reporting is appropriate for rule violations, but it is not an emergency service. Escalate immediately when the content threatens imminent violence, gives a target’s address or other personal information, encourages an attack, or targets a child.
- Stop contact, block the account and preserve the original link, username and time.
- Use the platform’s urgent safety or law-enforcement request route, if offered.
- Contact local law enforcement or a trusted safeguarding organization, especially when a real person, location or child is identifiable.
- Tell the potential target or their guardian through a safe channel if doing so will not increase danger.
Do not promise that a platform will remove the content, reveal an anonymous account or prevent a repeat offender. Keep the case number or confirmation message and update investigators if new threats appear.
Troubleshooting common failures
The block did not stop the content
The material may be reposted by another account, embedded in a server or visible through a game’s separate chat system. Report the copied item, leave or mute the group, and apply the game’s own block and report controls.

Filters cannot reliably classify every image, meme, voice line or coded phrase. Keep the filter enabled, then mute or block the source and report the individual media or voice segment.
The platform closed the report without visible action
A closure notice does not establish that the content was acceptable or that every related item was reviewed. Save the confirmation, report distinct offending items with their own evidence, and use an appeal or safety route if the service provides one. Do not submit dozens of duplicate reports for the same item.
The abuse is inside a game, not the platform’s social feed
Use the game’s in-game report and moderation system because its publisher may control the chat, replay or voice recording. Also use the console or social-network controls if the same content was sent through their messaging or profile features.
A repeatable five-minute response checklist
- Mute the player, account or channel.
- Block direct contact and invitations.
- Report the exact racist message, image, video, profile, broadcast or voice segment.
- Save the URL, account name, time and a safe screenshot or clip.
- Leave or restrict the space, tighten privacy settings, and escalate credible threats.
Menu labels, eligibility and evidence-retention periods can change by service, device, account age and country. If a control is missing, look under the platform’s current safety, privacy, communication or player-options menus and use the in-game report path for content the platform does not host.
