To block adults-only games reliably, give your child a separate account, set an age limit on the platform they actually use, and protect the parent account with a private PIN or password. On PS5, the child’s age and the console’s game-restriction level determine access. Xbox can filter by age and override individual titles. Windows uses Microsoft Family Safety, but games launched through Steam, Epic, PlayStation PC, Ubisoft, or another store may require controls in that launcher too. Steam now uses Steam Families rather than Family View.
“Adults Only” is the ESRB’s highest age category in the United States. Other countries use different rating organizations and labels, so choose the equivalent highest age category shown in your region. Menu names and available features can change with software updates or vary by country; test the child account after saving every setting.

Set up the accounts before changing game restrictions
Parental controls are easy to bypass when a child is using an adult account. Start by creating or confirming a child account in the platform’s family group, then sign the child into that account on every device. Keep your own account separate and protect it with a PIN or password that the child cannot guess.
Recommended Free Tools
The Entertainment Software Rating Board recommends setting up a child account for each child and using a parent-only password or PIN. This separation lets the platform apply the child’s age automatically and records exception requests under the family manager instead of exposing unrestricted settings.

Game ratings address game content only. Communication, user-generated content, web browsing, purchases, and playtime have separate controls on modern consoles and family services. Configure those categories independently if they matter to your household.
Block mature games on a PS5
PS5 applies its game restriction from the child’s age and the family manager’s selected preset or custom level. Under Sony’s preset system, a PS5 game can start only when its age rating is the same as or lower than the child’s age setting. A title above that level is blocked rather than merely hidden.
Configure the child’s PS5 game level
- Sign in to the adult account designated as the family manager.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child’s account.
- Open the parental-control settings and choose an age-appropriate preset, or customize the game restriction.
- Save the change, then have the child sign in to their own account and test a game in the restricted category.
If you are in the United States, an Adults Only (AO) title is above the normal child age ranges and will be stopped by an appropriately configured child profile. In another region, select the highest age category available in that region’s rating system; the label may not say AO.

Handle an exception without opening the whole catalog
When a child tries to start a restricted game, PS5 blocks it and displays an option to request access. The family manager can review that request under Allowed Games and approve or deny it. An approval is a title-specific exception, so it does not raise the child’s general age level for every game.
Before approving, check the exact edition and add-on involved. A base game, downloadable expansion, and streaming version can have different ratings or content. If you approve an exception, leave the general age preset unchanged and revisit the Allowed Games list periodically.

Controls that PS5 game blocking does not replace
- Communication and user-generated content: Restrict messaging, voice chat, sharing, and access to other players’ creations as appropriate.
- Web browsing: Apply the separate browser and web-content settings; game ratings do not filter ordinary web pages.
- Spending: Use purchase limits or approval requirements so a blocked game cannot be bought through the adult wallet.
- Playtime: Set schedules and daily limits independently of the age rating.
Block M-rated and other mature games on Xbox
Xbox combines an age setting with content filtering. The numerical age setting maps to the ESRB in the United States and to equivalent regional ratings elsewhere. ESRB gives this example: an age setting of 11 permits E10+ content but not Teen (T) or Mature (M). The exact mapping can differ by country, so use the labels displayed on your account.
Set the console’s age restriction
- On the Xbox console, open Settings > Privacy and online safety.
- Select the child’s account.
- Open Content restrictions.
- Set the allowed age to the child’s appropriate level.
- Save, then test the child profile with a game rated above and below that level.
This setting blocks games whose rating is too high for the selected age. It is more dependable than trying to identify every mature title by name, because new releases inherit the rating data supplied to the platform.

- Open the Xbox Family Settings app and select the child.
- Turn on content filtering and choose Allow Content Suitable for Age.
- Review the games list and individually allow or block a title when your household rule differs from its age rating.
Parents can also manage these family controls through the Microsoft Family website. An individual allow rule is useful for a carefully reviewed exception; an individual block rule can remove a game that falls within the child’s nominal age range.
Keep purchases and online interaction separate
Turn on purchase approval separately if spending is a concern. Content filtering does not automatically prevent a child from buying an allowed game, add-on, subscription, or in-game item. Configure privacy, communication, multiplayer, and user-generated-content permissions in their own sections so a child does not gain broader online access merely because a game is age-appropriate.
Xbox family controls can cover Xbox consoles and Windows devices, but the child must be using the managed Microsoft account. Verify the account shown in the console, the Xbox app, and Windows before assuming a rule is active.

Block mature games on a Windows PC
Windows has two layers: Microsoft Family Safety for the child’s Windows account and the controls belonging to the store or launcher that supplies the game. Family Safety can set age limits and filter apps and games, but coverage depends on the managed account and where the game is distributed.
Prepare a managed Windows account
- Create or use a child Microsoft account and add it to your Microsoft family group.
- Have the child sign in to Windows with that account, not an administrator or adult account.
- Open Microsoft Family Safety and select the child’s profile.
- Set the age limit and enable app and game filters.
- On the PC, sign out of administrator accounts and confirm the child can launch only the software intended for that profile.
Microsoft describes content filters as a way to prevent access to mature web content, apps, and games. They are effective only when the child uses the managed account and the game is visible to the service. A local administrator account, a different Microsoft account, or an unrecognized executable can bypass the intended boundary.
Configure the launcher that actually starts the game
If the game comes from Steam, Epic, PlayStation PC, Ubisoft, or another launcher, configure that service as well as Windows. Each launcher can maintain its own library, account, age gate, or family feature. A Windows age limit is not proof that every third-party executable will be blocked.
PlayStation specifically states that its console age-level, Allowed Games gameplay, playtime, spending, and several other controls do not apply to PlayStation games for PC. Use the launcher’s own family controls where available, then keep Microsoft Family Safety enabled for the Windows account.
Verify the result on a PC
- Check which Windows account is signed in at the desktop.
- Check which account is active inside the launcher.
- Try launching a game installed through the launcher and another installed outside it.
- Confirm that a blocked title cannot be started from a desktop shortcut, the Start menu, or the launcher library.
- Test after updates, because a launcher, game edition, or account change can alter how a title is classified.
Use Steam Families for Steam games
Steam’s current parental-control system is Steam Families. It replaced Family View. Steam Families lets parents restrict the library that a child can use to a subset called Family Games and manage which titles are included.

Restrict a Steam library
- Set up a Steam Family with the adult account as the parent and the child’s account as a child member.
- Open the family-management controls in Steam and review the games available to the child.
- Remove mature or otherwise unsuitable games from the child’s Family Games library.
- Keep the parent account protected so the child cannot change the family membership or library selection.
Steam Families controls Steam titles only. Keep Windows-level restrictions enabled for games installed outside Steam, and configure another launcher separately when the same PC contains games from multiple stores.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the major platforms differ
| Platform | Age-rating model | Individual title exceptions | Where it applies | Parent-account protection | Other controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Child age plus preset or custom game-restriction level; a title must be at or below the permitted age. | Yes. A blocked game can generate a request reviewed under Allowed Games. | PS5 games on the console; PlayStation console controls do not carry over to PlayStation games for PC. | Family-manager account with a private PIN or password. | Communication, user-generated content, web browsing, spending, and playtime are separate. |
| Xbox | Numerical allowed age mapped to ESRB or the local rating system. | Yes. Xbox Family Settings can individually allow or block a title. | Xbox consoles and Windows devices when the child uses the managed Microsoft account. | Parent account and family settings protected by the adult sign-in. | Purchase approval, privacy, communication, multiplayer, user-generated content, and screen-time settings are separate. |
| Windows with Microsoft Family Safety | Child age limit with app and game filters. | Depends on the service distributing the game; configure its launcher separately. | Windows and, through the Microsoft family system, Xbox devices; coverage depends on the managed account and software source. | Adult Microsoft account protected by its password and device permissions. | Web, app, game, spending, and activity controls are configured in separate areas. |
| Steam Families | Parent-selected Family Games library rather than a console-wide age switch. | Yes. Parents decide which Steam games are included. | Steam games; other PC launchers and executables need their own controls. | Parent role and Steam account credentials must remain private. | Library access is separate from Windows, browser, communication, and spending controls. |
The practical difference is scope. PS5 and Xbox can enforce a console-level age rule, while Steam Families is primarily a curated library. Windows sits underneath launchers but cannot guarantee control over software that the managed service does not recognize.
Allow one carefully reviewed exception
Use the platform’s title-specific mechanism instead of raising the child’s general age level. On PS5, approve the request in Allowed Games. On Xbox, individually allow the selected title in Xbox Family Settings. In Steam Families, add only that game to Family Games. For a Windows title, apply the launcher’s own exception and leave the Microsoft Family Safety age limit in place.
Document what you approved and why, especially when several children share a family group. Recheck the game after major updates or when downloadable content is added; an expansion can introduce content that was not present in the original release.
Troubleshoot when a mature game still launches
The child is using the adult account
Sign out and inspect the profile name before launching the game. Change the adult PIN or password if the child knows it, and remove saved credentials from the console or PC.
Best Value
The account is not in the family group
Confirm that the child account appears under Family Management, Xbox family settings, Microsoft Family Safety, or Steam Families. Add the correct account, then sign in again on the device.
The restriction was set in the wrong service
A console rule will not automatically govern a PC launcher. Configure the service that owns the game and retain the Windows account filter as a second layer.
The game is an executable outside the expected library
Test shortcuts, alternate launchers, streaming versions, and copied installations. Remove administrator access from the child’s Windows account and apply the relevant launcher controls.
