To become a forward deployed engineer (FDE), build the combination the job requires: production software engineering, customer discovery, system design, evaluation, and clear communication. Then demonstrate it with an end-to-end project that takes a real workflow from problem definition through a working deployment and measured results. Prepare to explain the choices and trade-offs behind that work; interview formats vary by employer and team.
What a forward deployed engineer does
An FDE works with customers to turn an unclear operational need into a technical solution people can use. The work can span discovery, technical scoping, system design, implementation, rollout, customer adoption, and feedback to product or research teams. In its reviewed FDE posting, OpenAI describes success in terms of production adoption, measurable workflow impact, and evaluation feedback (OpenAI FDE role).

A related OpenAI Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSWE) description emphasizes hands-on work with customer technical teams, full-stack solution design, iterative development, clear scopes for prototypes and production deployments, and work on customer infrastructure. It also names collaboration across product, research, sales, solution engineering, and customer success (OpenAI FDSWE role).

Employers differ in engineering depth, customer-embedding expectations, deployment ownership, domain, location or travel, seniority, and how they measure success. The reviewed OpenAI FDE posting asks for five or more years of relevant engineering or technical deployment experience, while the separate FDSWE listing asks for seven or more years of professional full-stack experience. Those are requirements in those specific listings, not general minimums for every FDE role. Read the exact posting you plan to target.

Skills to build
Production software engineering
Be ready to write, review, and explain maintainable code across the parts of a full-stack application the role needs. The cited OpenAI listings mention production-grade engineering, frontend and backend work, and relational databases such as Postgres or MySQL. A demo that works only on a developer’s laptop does not show how you handle deployment, reliability, or ongoing change.
Customer discovery and scoping
Before suggesting a technical approach, find out who does the work, how the workflow runs today, where time or accuracy is lost, and what constraints cannot be ignored. Ask what observable result would make a solution useful. Turn the answers into a bounded scope: what you will build, what you will not build, and how you will judge success.

System design and integration
Explain how the application fits the customer’s data, APIs, existing infrastructure, and operating constraints. Be prepared to trace information from its source through processing and the user interface, including what happens when an integration fails or data is missing. A sound architecture must function in its intended environment, not just look convincing in a presentation.
Evaluation and production judgment
Define how you will determine whether the solution works before expanding its use. For a workflow involving model output, that may mean evaluating output quality as well as whether users complete the task. Consider rollout stages, failure handling, monitoring, access boundaries, and the evidence needed to proceed. OpenAI’s FDE description explicitly connects the role with adoption, workflow impact, and evaluation-informed feedback.
Rank #3
Communication and ownership
FDEs work across technical and nontechnical groups, so they need to explain trade-offs in terms each audience can use. Practice stating what you know, what remains uncertain, what failed, and what you would do next. The role descriptions emphasize customer communication, judgment in ambiguous situations, and follow-through alongside technical work.
Build a portfolio project that demonstrates the full job
The cited job postings do not prescribe a portfolio format. A strong project is therefore a practical way to demonstrate the responsibilities they describe—not a published employer checklist or a guarantee of hiring success. Choose one bounded workflow, such as support-ticket triage, document search, or a data integration with a review interface. Use synthetic or public data unless you have permission to use real customer data.
Rank #4
- Define the problem. Name the user, the workflow, and the friction you want to reduce. Describe the current process rather than beginning with a particular model or tool.
- Set boundaries and a success measure. State the project’s non-goals and choose a measurable criterion tied to the workflow. Explain how you will collect the evidence; do not claim improvement you have not measured.
- Build a usable application. Show the data or integration path and provide an interface that supports the user’s task. Document important design choices so a reviewer can follow how the pieces fit together.
- Evaluate it. Describe the test data, evaluation method, and results. Include shortcomings or cases the system handles poorly, not only successful examples.
- Address operations. Explain failure handling, access boundaries, monitoring, and a staged rollout. Discuss cost or latency where they matter to the workflow, and identify what you would watch in production.
- Present the work clearly. Provide a short demo and a design note covering alternatives, trade-offs, limitations, and what user feedback might change. Be prepared to defend consequential decisions.
A complete project with measured evidence and honest limitations conveys more about end-to-end delivery than several disconnected model demos. Its value is in making your engineering, customer reasoning, and operational judgment visible—not in promising a particular interview outcome.
Prepare for FDE interviews
Build examples from work you actually did
Prepare concise accounts of a project you owned, an ambiguous requirement you clarified, a technical decision you defended, a failure you handled, and a rollout or adoption challenge. For each, explain the context, your actions, the result, and what you learned. Be specific about your contribution rather than presenting a team outcome as solely your own.

Practice customer solution design
Start by asking who the user is, how the workflow works, what constraints apply, and what success means. Only then propose a smallest useful solution. Walk through integrations and evaluation, surface risks and trade-offs, and explain what evidence would justify expanding use. This order demonstrates discovery and scoping rather than jumping straight to architecture.
Be ready to defend a technical deep dive
Know the consequential choices in your project: data flow, retrieval or another technical approach, evaluation, failure modes, access controls, latency, cost, and rollout. Explain how you know the system works and where the evidence is incomplete. A third-party interview guide recommends this kind of project defense, but it should be treated as preparation advice rather than a prediction of exact questions.
Confirm the process with the recruiter
An independent interview guide reviewed July 13, 2026 reports a possible OpenAI FDE process involving a take-home project, technical deep dive, customer solution-design discussion, and hiring-manager or values conversations (The Forward Deployed interview guide). OpenAI does not publish a universal FDE interview loop, and the guide says reports vary by team. Use the outline to practice, then ask the recruiter which stages apply to the specific role.

Job titles alone do not tell you how a role balances building and customer work. Compare the posting’s engineering expectations, how closely you will work with customer teams, whether you own deployment and adoption, the domain, experience level, location or travel expectations, and the measures of success. The two OpenAI listings illustrate why this matters: they describe related work but specify different experience thresholds and contexts.
