Neither Facebook Marketplace nor Craigslist can be called categorically safer based on the available evidence. The sources describe different safety tools and guidance, but do not compare scam, theft or harm rates using the same definitions, geography or number of transactions. For a local sale, your communication, payment and meetup choices matter more than an unsupported platform ranking.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Platform safety advice explains what a service recommends; it does not prove that the service has fewer incidents. The sources reviewed do not provide an apples-to-apples comparison of incident rates for Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist.

Incident figures that may sound comparable have different scopes. Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs reported 4,550 scam reports in 2023 and 1,138 in 2022 across Facebook products including Marketplace, Messenger and Pages. These are not Marketplace-only totals, do not account for the number of users or transactions, and have no Craigslist comparator. The Ministry’s page was updated on 30 January 2026: Facebook Marketplace: Tips for transacting safely.

Portland Police Bureau reported that its Major Crimes Unit had investigated at least 10 similar online-marketplace transactions involving robberies or other crimes since the beginning of 2026. That local count is not a rate or platform ranking. The Bureau also described an armed robbery on 9 June 2026 during a Facebook Marketplace e-bike sale: PPB Urges Caution When Buying and Selling Items Online.

The FBI’s account of a robbery crew targeting local classified transactions describes a case, not current frequency or relative risk: Craigslist Robbers. None of these figures or cases establishes which platform is safer overall.

How the platforms’ published guidance differs

Craigslist: prioritize face-to-face exchanges and avoid advance payments

Craigslist advises users to deal locally and face-to-face, avoid giving or accepting payment before meeting, protect personal and financial information, use its mail relay, and arrange a public meetup. It warns about shipping or mover arrangements, “guaranteed” transactions, payment-processing services and requests for verification codes. The advice appears on its Avoiding Scams help page, which says: “Deal locally, face-to-face —follow this one rule and avoid the vast majority of scam attempts.” This is Craigslist’s own claim, not an independently measured comparison.

Craigslist’s In Person Transactions guidance recommends meeting in public—giving a bank or police department as examples—rather than inviting a stranger home or meeting somewhere secluded. It also advises taking extra care with high-value items, telling someone where you are going, considering a companion and trusting your instincts. Its statement that “The overwhelming majority of craigslist users are trustworthy and well-meaning” is reassurance from the platform, not a risk-rate estimate.

Facebook Marketplace: profile signals and reporting, with payment off-platform in the reviewed guidance

The Singapore Ministry of Home Affairs page describes ways Marketplace users can review profiles, activity and ratings; report sellers or listings; keep messages on-platform to retain a record; and use spam filtering and inline warnings for some suspicious requests. It recommends a public, well-lit meeting place and sharing the plan with someone trusted.

That same page says Marketplace does not process payments and transactions are conducted off-platform. Its description is specific to Singapore; it does not establish that features or payment arrangements operate identically in every country or remain unchanged over time. A profile or rating can provide information to consider, but is not proof of identity or a guarantee of a safe transaction.

How to reduce risk when selling locally

  1. Keep communication in the platform where practical. Use Craigslist’s mail relay or, for Marketplace as described in the Singapore guidance, keep messages in-platform so you retain a record. Be cautious if someone pushes to move the conversation elsewhere without a good reason.
  2. Agree on a public meetup. Choose a place with other people around and good visibility. Craigslist specifically suggests a bank or police department; Marketplace’s Singapore guidance recommends a public, well-lit location. Check whether your local police department offers an exchange area rather than assuming one is available.
  3. Share your plan and consider company. Tell someone where and when you are meeting, and consider bringing a companion. Do not invite an unknown buyer into your home or agree to a secluded location for convenience. Extra care is sensible for high-value items.
  4. Reject suspicious payment arrangements. Be wary of advance-payment demands, overpayment checks, gift cards, wire transfers, suspicious escrow or payment-processing arrangements, and requests for personal information or verification codes. Never give a prospective buyer a verification code.
  5. Verify payment independently before handing over the item. Check the bank or payment provider’s own interface; do not treat a message or screenshot as proof that funds arrived. The FTC warns that fake payment notifications and fake checks can make money appear available temporarily before a bank reverses it. Its advice concerns online selling generally, not a comparison of these platforms: Selling stuff online? Here’s how to avoid a scam.
  6. Pause or leave if the plan changes in a concerning way. Pressure for personal information, a last-minute change to the agreed arrangement, or anything that makes you uncomfortable is reason to stop. A public place and careful planning reduce avoidable exposure, but cannot guarantee safety.

How to choose between them for a particular sale

Choose based on the features and practices that suit the transaction, not on a claim that one has a proven lower incident rate. If retaining an in-platform message record and reviewing the profile, ratings and reporting options described by the Singapore guidance are useful to you, factor those in while remembering their geographic scope and limits. If you use Craigslist, follow its mail-relay and face-to-face guidance. For either service, treat a buyer’s account details as signals rather than guarantees, verify payment yourself and set meetup terms you are comfortable with.

For context on general marketplace precautions, Portland Police Bureau’s June 2026 release quotes Detective Sergeant Matt Jacobsen: “Online marketplaces provide a convenient way for people to buy and sell items, but criminals can take advantage of these transactions when proper precautions are not taken.” The warning applies to online marketplaces generally, not just one platform.
