A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is generally closer to building and deploying a working system for a customer; a Solutions Engineer (SE) is generally closer to helping a customer evaluate a solution and reach a technical buying decision. Both roles are technical and customer-facing, and the boundary is not universal: some SEs build proof-of-concepts, while FDEs may work closely with sales and product teams. Compare the actual work and success measures in each job posting, not just its title.

What does a Forward Deployed Engineer do?

In the OpenAI FDE postings reviewed on October 4, 2026, the role covers technical work from discovery through production rollout. That can include scoping a customer problem, designing a system, building and integrating it, and supporting its adoption. OpenAI describes its Forward Deployed Engineering team as partnering with customers to turn research breakthroughs into production systems: OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineer posting.

The engineering is not limited to configuring a product or presenting a proposed design. OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Software Engineer posting describes custom full-stack software for customer problems, coding alongside customer technical teams, and creating reusable abstractions that can improve future engagements. The posting specifies seven or more years of professional full-stack experience for that particular San Francisco role; it is not a universal FDE requirement. See OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Software Engineer posting.

The job can change substantially with the customer’s industry. OpenAI’s healthcare FDE posting extends the work through evaluation, adoption, and handoff, and names privacy, security, governance, and regulated-system expertise among relevant concerns. It also makes clear that the FDE owns the technical solution, not necessarily the commercial or executive relationship: OpenAI’s healthcare FDE posting.

Salesforce describes its FDEs as building and deploying custom Agentforce solutions and carrying customer feedback back into product development. Its description reinforces the delivery focus while showing that FDE responsibilities can be shaped by a company’s product and strategy: Salesforce’s Forward Deployed Engineer posting.

What does a Solutions Engineer do?

In the Salesforce pre-sales postings reviewed, the SE partners with Sales to understand a prospect’s needs and demonstrate how a product could meet them. The work may include discovery and qualification, demos, workshops, architecture recommendations, proof-of-concepts (POCs), and technical validation. Salesforce describes the outcome as securing the technical win for a sales opportunity, rather than owning production implementation from end to end. See Salesforce’s pre-sales Solution Engineer posting.

A POC can involve real technical work, so it is too simple to say that SEs do not code or build. The distinction is usually the purpose and extent of that work: an SE’s demo or POC helps validate a solution during evaluation, while an FDE role may continue into production delivery and adoption. The Salesforce posting describes technical sales partnership and alignment with a customer’s vision; another Salesforce SE description explicitly focuses on the technical win and closing sales opportunities.

SE roles can also involve internal collaboration beyond Sales, including Product, Engineering, and Professional Services. Some postings ask for prior hands-on delivery experience or product- and industry-specific credentials. Those requirements depend on the role; a Solutions Engineer can be highly technical even when the primary outcome is a validated purchase decision.

How the roles compare

Dimension Forward Deployed Engineer Solutions Engineer
Typical center of gravity in the postings reviewed Technical delivery: scoping, system design, build, integration, production rollout, and adoption. Presales evaluation: discovery, solution design, demonstrations, workshops, POCs, and technical validation.
Common success measure Production adoption and workflow impact, as described in OpenAI’s FDE posting. The technical win and support for a sales opportunity, as described in Salesforce’s SE postings.
Build or code ownership May include production-grade software and ownership through rollout; verify the specific role’s scope. May include hands-on demos or POCs, usually to validate a proposed solution during evaluation.
Customer-engagement stage Can span discovery, implementation, productionization, adoption, and handoff. Often concentrated on evaluation and the sales cycle, though duties vary by employer.
Commercial relationship Technical ownership does not necessarily mean owning the account or executive relationship. Typically works in partnership with Sales; confirm who owns the account relationship.
Requirements Can emphasize full-stack engineering, production systems, integrations, ambiguity, communication, and domain-specific needs such as healthcare governance. Can emphasize product and architecture fluency, discovery, presenting, sales partnership, and POC design; prior delivery or credentials may be requested.

This is a comparison of the employer descriptions cited here, not a universal job-family standard. Salesforce’s SE postings include POCs, and Salesforce describes FDEs as a direct customer link; work can overlap even when the role’s main outcome differs.

Which role involves more coding?

FDE postings are more likely to make hands-on engineering and production delivery central to the job. The OpenAI examples explicitly describe custom software, full-stack work, and ownership extending to production rollout. An SE may also code, configure a system, or build a POC, but the Salesforce examples position that work in support of evaluation and a technical sales win.

Do not infer the answer from title alone. Look for verbs in the job description: “build,” “integrate,” “deploy,” and “productionize” suggest sustained delivery ownership; “demo,” “validate,” “present,” and “qualify” suggest more presales work. Ask whether prototypes are expected to become production systems and who is responsible when the customer moves beyond the evaluation.

Skills and experience to compare

For a Forward Deployed Engineer role

  • How much production-grade coding is expected, and which languages or parts of the stack matter?
  • Does the engineer own design, integration, reliability, evaluation, rollout, and adoption, or only a defined piece?
  • How much work takes place in customer environments, and what travel or on-site expectations apply?
  • How does the role handle ambiguity, changing requirements, and collaboration with customer technical teams?
  • For regulated or specialized domains, what privacy, security, governance, interoperability, or evaluation knowledge is required?

These are dimensions to check, not a standardized checklist. OpenAI’s postings illustrate a mix of engineering, scoping, communication, and customer delivery; the healthcare posting adds responsibilities specific to regulated systems.

For a Solutions Engineer role

  • How much time goes to discovery, demos, workshops, architecture sessions, and technical qualification?
  • What is the expected scope of a POC, and does the SE build it directly or coordinate with another team?
  • How is success measured: technical validation, progression of an opportunity, customer outcomes, or a combination?
  • Which product, platform, industry, or architecture knowledge is essential?
  • Does the role require prior implementation experience or specific certifications, and are those requirements mandatory?

A strong SE needs enough technical fluency to design and explain a credible solution, but presentation, listening, and partnership with Sales can be just as central as coding. The balance varies by product and employer.

Career paths: what is established and what is not

The employer descriptions show adjacent work, not a single standard career ladder. FDE postings point toward deeper engineering delivery, reusable implementation practices, customer-informed product work, and leadership; Salesforce also lists FDE leadership roles. SE postings describe collaboration with Sales, Product, Engineering, and Professional Services. These relationships make moves into engineering delivery, sales engineering, product, architecture, or leadership plausible, but the postings do not establish typical promotion timelines or prove that one role leads to better long-term outcomes.

Before choosing a role for its presumed career prospects, ask the employer how performance is evaluated, what senior-level scope looks like, and what internal moves people have actually made. Confirm the answers against that company’s career framework rather than assuming titles mean the same thing across organizations.

How to choose between the roles

  1. Compare the outcome. Decide whether you would rather be accountable primarily for a working system in production or for technical validation that helps a customer make a buying decision.
  2. Ask who owns delivery after a POC. Find out whether the role carries an implementation through production and adoption, hands it to another team, or supports the customer only during evaluation.
  3. Clarify the customer relationship. Ask who owns commercial conversations, executive communication, technical decisions, and post-sale support. FDE technical ownership does not automatically include commercial ownership.
  4. Check the day-to-day technical work. Compare coding expectations, integration and architecture work, demo preparation, workshops, POC scope, and any domain requirements against the actual description.
  5. Verify practical conditions. Confirm location, travel, experience thresholds, role status, and compensation directly with the employer. Job postings change, and requirements in one posting should not be generalized to another.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The comparison above uses employer postings to describe what those employers expect, not an independent survey of all companies. The Salesforce SE posting cited here is dated June 19, 2026; the OpenAI and other Salesforce pages were live when reviewed on October 4, 2026. Titles, requirements, and responsibilities can differ across employers and change over time. The cited postings do not establish a role-wide pay range, demand figure, or typical career outcome, so a specific employer’s current posting and career framework are the right sources for those decisions.
