How to unlock the Pufferfish fight
- Go to Island 3 and speak with the tourist. The guides place the encounter on this island and tie its start to the tourist’s request.
- Complete the endangered-catch exchange. The requested catch earns you Carrot bait, which is used to start the fight. Check the tourist’s active request rather than relying on a fixed species list: the guides do not establish one definitive list that applies across versions.
- Prepare for a moving fight. One guide recommends cooked healing and open terrain. PC Gamer recounts winning with an upgraded SMG while moving and shooting. These are reported tactics, not requirements or a guaranteed best loadout. PC Gamer’s August 25, 2026 account describes that approach.
For patch context, Game Playbook reports reviewing data for patch 1.0.12 on September 5, 2026. How to Fish Game Help says its page was updated September 8, 2026, with evidence reviewed through patch 1.0.9, and cautions that later difficulty-setting changes may affect older expectations. How to handle the first phase
Move out of the roll’s path
Pufferfish rolls toward you. Keep moving and sidestep out of its line instead of standing still to trade attacks. The guides describe avoiding the charge as the central first-phase response.

Attack during the recovery gap
Once the roll passes or the boss resets, use that pause to deal damage. Then reposition before its next approach. PC Gamer also recommends running and shooting rather than stopping for a prolonged attack.
What changes in phase two
Later in the encounter, the guides report a purple poison trail. It makes the route you take as important as dodging the boss: move toward clear ground and avoid doubling back across the trail you have just left. Keep enough open space to change direction as the boss rolls.

Quick troubleshooting
- The fight has not started: Recheck the tourist’s request and finish the endangered-catch exchange to obtain Carrot bait.
- You keep getting hit by the roll: Leave its line and keep moving; take your damage opportunity after it passes or resets.
- The poison trail blocks your route: Turn toward clean, open ground rather than crossing back over the recent trail.
- You won but progression did not advance: Look for the boss’s dropped progression item and take it back to the tourist.
