Use the dungeon item to create each boss’s opening, then attack only during the stun window. The ten major encounters occur in this order: Queen Gohma, King Dodongo, Barinade, Phantom Ganon, Volvagia, Morpha, Bongo Bongo, Twinrova, Ganondorf, and Ganon. The first eight protect dungeons; Ganondorf and Ganon are the final battles. This guide gives the required item, the attack sequence, and the safest way to move in every arena.
Boss order and the item that makes each one vulnerable
Most Ocarina of Time bosses are built around a clear loop: expose a weak point with a dungeon item, stun the boss, land sword damage, and reset your position before the next attack. The table below is the fastest way to identify what to equip before entering each room.

Prepare before entering a boss room
Boss arenas usually give you enough space to recover, but entering without ammunition or the correct item turns a simple vulnerability into a long, risky fight. Refill your hearts and ammunition before crossing the boss-room threshold. Put the required item on an immediately accessible button so you can switch between it and the sword without losing sight of the boss.

- Child Link equipment: Fairy Slingshot, Bombs or Bomb Flowers, and Boomerang cover the first three dungeons.
- Adult Link equipment: Fairy Bow, Megaton Hammer, Longshot, Lens of Truth, Mirror Shield, and Light Arrows are needed for the later encounters.
- Weapons: Keep the Master Sword ready for normal sword damage. The Megaton Hammer, Biggoron’s Sword, or another available weapon can damage Ganon when the Master Sword is unavailable.
- Resources: Carry enough hearts and ammunition to repeat the stun cycle. Missing one shot is much less dangerous when you can immediately try again.
- Movement: Spend the opening seconds learning the arena’s safe path. Most deaths happen while Link is trapped against a wall, under a rolling boss, or in a tentacle’s reach.
1. Queen Gohma — Great Deku Tree
How to create the opening
Look up as soon as the fight begins. Queen Gohma’s eye changes to red before she attacks. Aim the Fairy Slingshot at that eye and fire; Deku Seeds work as the ammunition. A successful hit stuns her and leaves her on the ground.
How to deal damage safely
Run in during the stun and use sword jump slashes. Do not keep swinging after the stun ends: retreat before Gohma recovers and climbs away. Repeat the eye shot, approach, and jump-slash sequence after each stun.
Common failure and recovery
If the eye is not red, a shot will not create the useful opening. Wait for the color change instead of spending ammunition on random shots. If Gohma reaches the wall or ceiling, re-center Link and keep looking upward so the next red-eye window is easy to see.
2. King Dodongo — Dodongo’s Cavern
Use the inhale, not the fire breath
King Dodongo opens its mouth and inhales before breathing fire. Throw a Bomb or Bomb Flower into the mouth during that inhale. The explosion stuns the boss and gives you time to run to its head.

Strike with the sword while King Dodongo is stunned, then move away before it starts rolling. During the rolling attack, raise the Hylian Shield or move to the side. Trying to stand in front of the rolling body is riskier than simply giving up a few seconds and waiting for the next inhale.
Timing mistakes
Throwing too early lets the bomb sit outside the mouth; throwing too late leaves Link in the fire-breathing line. Watch the mouth animation, keep a bomb ready, and prioritize a clean stun over a hurried sword hit.
3. Barinade — Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly
Remove the ceiling tentacles
Barinade begins attached to the ceiling by tentacles. Use the Boomerang to sever those tentacles. Once detached, the boss exposes its moving body and begins a more dangerous attack pattern.
Clear the orbiting electric jellyfish
Stun Barinade with the Boomerang, then deal with the electric jellyfish orbiting its body. Removing them prevents accidental contact while you line up the next stun and keeps the central target accessible.

When the orbiting enemies are gone, stun the central body with the Boomerang and run in for sword attacks. Watch for spinning charges and electrical discharges. After each sword sequence, move back to a clear part of the room before throwing the next Boomerang.
4. Phantom Ganon — Forest Temple
Identify the real rider
Phantom Ganon first appears in the paintings around the arena. Three riders move through the paintings; the real Phantom Ganon exits the brighter painting. Track the riders rather than firing at the first figure you see, then shoot the real one with the Fairy Bow.
Return the energy balls
The second phase changes the fight to a reflection contest. Phantom Ganon sends energy balls toward Link. Use the sword to return them. When the reflected shot hits Phantom Ganon, the boss is stunned and can be struck with the Master Sword.
Keep the center clear
Stay positioned where you can see both the paintings and the incoming projectiles. Chasing the wrong rider or standing too close to a wall makes it harder to react. In the second phase, keep the sword ready and make short, deliberate swings so the reflection travels back toward the boss.

Read the lava pits
Volvagia moves beneath the arena and emerges from one of several lava pits. Watch for the pit that emits smoke; that is the warning for the next appearance. Move toward a clear space while keeping the Megaton Hammer equipped.
Hammer the head, then use the sword
When Volvagia’s head emerges, hit it with the Megaton Hammer. The impact creates the stun window. Follow with sword strikes, then back away before the boss dives again.
Survive the attacks between openings
Keep moving during fire-breathing and falling-rock attacks. Standing still to preserve a preferred angle is more dangerous than circling the room. Once the attack passes, return your attention to the smoking pit rather than searching randomly for the next emergence.
6. Morpha — Water Temple
Pull the nucleus from the water
Morpha’s red nucleus is the target. Use the Longshot to pull it out of the water and onto the platform, then slash it with the sword. The tentacle itself is not the main target; concentrate on the red core whenever it is exposed.
Use a corner without becoming trapped
Standing in a corner reduces the number of directions from which a tentacle can grab Link. It is not a permanent safe zone: if a tentacle closes in, reposition immediately. Keep enough room to fire the Longshot and sidestep the next sweep.
Repeat the pull-and-slash cycle
After each sword attack, regain a clear view of the water and wait for the nucleus to present another pull. Rushing into the pool gives the tentacles more opportunities to catch Link, while a patient Longshot shot preserves control of the arena.
7. Bongo Bongo — Shadow Temple
Stun both hands
Bongo Bongo attacks from the drum surface with two hands. Use the Fairy Bow to stun both hands. Hitting one hand and ignoring the other leaves the boss free to disrupt your aim, so make both hands part of the opening before targeting the body.
Reveal and hit the eye
Equip the Lens of Truth to reveal Bongo Bongo’s body and eye. Shoot the eye with the Fairy Bow. The successful hit exposes the boss to a sword attack.

Control Link on the moving drum
The drum’s movement can throw off both your aim and your footing. Keep Link’s position under control rather than chasing the boss across the surface. Once the eye is hit, move in for sword damage, then reset your stance before the next hand attack.
8. Twinrova — Spirit Temple
Reflect the separate witches’ attacks
Before the fusion, Twinrova consists of Koume and Kotake. Use the Mirror Shield to reflect Koume’s fire attack back at Kotake and Kotake’s ice attack back at Koume. The shield is the key to turning their elemental shots into damage against the correct target.
Charge the fused form correctly
After the witches fuse, absorb three attacks of the same element in a row with the Mirror Shield. Release the stored energy to stun Twinrova, then run in and use the sword. Absorbing the wrong element resets the charge, so do not raise the shield against an attack merely because it is arriving first; identify the element you are building toward.
Stay deliberate during the reset
Once a charge is reset, return to neutral positioning and begin a new three-hit sequence. The fight becomes much safer when you choose one element and wait for it instead of trying to absorb every projectile.

Return his energy ball
Ganondorf sends energy balls across the arena. Deflect them with the sword. The Megaton Hammer or a Bottle can also return the attack. When the reflected energy hits Ganondorf, he is vulnerable.
Use a Light Arrow and strike
Fire a Light Arrow at Ganondorf after his own attack hits him. The Light Arrow brings him down, creating the opening for sword attacks. Move in quickly, deliver your damage, and leave enough space to react when he rises.
Avoid the ground-pound shockwave
Ganondorf’s ground pound sends a shockwave through the arena. Do not stand directly beneath or near the impact point. Keep moving after each attack sequence so the shockwave does not catch Link while you are focused on the next reflection.
10. Ganon — the ruins of Ganon’s Castle
Fight without the Master Sword first
At the start, the Master Sword is unavailable. Create an opening with a Light Arrow or another available stun, roll between Ganon’s legs, and attack the exposed tail. The Megaton Hammer, Biggoron’s Sword, or another available weapon can damage the tail during this phase.
Use the opening Zelda creates
When Zelda creates an opening, retrieve the Master Sword. This is the transition that restores the weapon needed for the final part of the fight, so do not remain at Ganon’s feet after the opening appears.
Finish with the Master Sword
Return to the same basic pattern: stun or evade Ganon, roll between the legs, and reach the exposed tail. Use the Master Sword for the final blow. Keep moving around the legs rather than trying to block the full body, and leave the center immediately after each strike so Ganon’s next swing cannot pin Link.
What to do when a boss strategy is not working
The item appears to do nothing
Check that you are using the item during the boss’s vulnerable animation. Gohma’s eye must be red, Dodongo must be inhaling, Volvagia’s head must be above the lava, and Morpha’s red nucleus must be visible. Using the correct item at the wrong moment usually produces no stun.
You run out of ammunition
Stop attacking during invulnerable movement and wait for a guaranteed opening. Refill before the next attempt, then reserve shots for the eye, rider, hands, or nucleus described in that encounter. A missed projectile is less costly than repeatedly firing while the boss cannot be hurt.
You take damage while trying to reach the target
Separate the fight into two jobs: create the stun, then move in for damage. Use the Hylian Shield against King Dodongo’s roll, a corner with an escape route against Morpha, and continuous movement against Volvagia’s fire and rocks. Retreat as soon as the stun ends instead of trying to add one more sword swing.
You cannot see the target
Use the equipment that reveals or clarifies the vulnerability. The Lens of Truth reveals Bongo Bongo’s body and eye, while the brighter painting identifies the real Phantom Ganon rider. For Twinrova, identify the element before raising the Mirror Shield so an incorrect absorption does not erase your progress.
Quick Recap
A compact run-through checklist
- Enter the Great Deku Tree with the Fairy Slingshot and shoot Queen Gohma’s red eye.
