You can batch-convert files without adding avoidable quality loss, but no setting guarantees that every file will stay identical. If a compatible container change is all you need, copying the encoded streams avoids re-encoding; if the codec or image format must change, choose a lossless output where available and expect larger files. The safest workflow is to use a tool suited to the file type, test representative files, and keep originals until you have checked the results.
What “without losing quality” can—and cannot—mean
Conversion may change a file’s container, codec, pixel representation, metadata, or supported features. Preserving one does not necessarily preserve all the others, and a lossless conversion does not mean the output file will be byte-for-byte identical to the source.

For audio and video, distinguish remuxing from transcoding. Remuxing puts existing encoded streams into a different container without re-encoding them. Transcoding decodes and encodes streams again. FFmpeg’s documentation explains that encoding is typically lossy to reduce file size, although some encoders are lossless at the cost of much larger output files: FFmpeg documentation.

A lossless destination cannot restore detail already discarded by a lossy source. For example, converting a JPEG to PNG does not recover information lost during JPEG compression. The realistic goal is to avoid unnecessary additional loss and confirm that important tracks, frames, transparency, and metadata remain usable.

Choose a converter for the file family
Audio and video: FFmpeg
FFmpeg is an open-source media toolkit for reading and writing many audio and video formats. Its basic command pattern is ffmpeg -i input output. For a batch, apply a tested command to each input with an operating-system-appropriate loop or a batch interface. The appropriate command depends on the actual formats and what must be preserved; there is no universal command that safely converts every media file.
If you only need a different container, try stream copy when the destination container supports the existing codecs and streams. FFmpeg uses -c copy to copy streams without re-encoding; it does not convert their codecs. If the destination cannot contain a source stream, this approach may fail or require a different output choice. See the FFmpeg manual for options and behavior.

If a codec change is necessary, select an encoder deliberately. A lossless encoder can avoid another lossy encoding step, but may substantially increase file size. Do not assume that a smaller output is better: a smaller lossy file may have discarded information.
Raster images: ImageMagick
ImageMagick’s magick command converts formats; its documentation demonstrates magick rose.jpg rose.png. Keep resizing and other image-processing operations out of a format-only batch unless you intend those changes. A PNG can retain pixel values from the decoded source representation, but it cannot restore details already lost in a JPEG. Format capabilities also matter: JPEG does not support transparency. ImageMagick documents format-specific support and notes at its formats reference; command examples are in its conversion documentation.

For animation, verify that all frames survive. ImageMagick notes that APNG should be opened with an explicit apng: format specifier; without it, the program assumes PNG and reads only the first frame. Consult the format notes before processing animated files.
Office documents and other specialized formats
Documents are a separate conversion problem from media and raster images. Choose a converter that explicitly supports the source and destination document formats, and check layout, fonts, embedded media, formulas, and other features that matter to your files. The tools above are not universal converters for every document type.

A safe batch-conversion workflow
- Inventory the inputs and keep a recoverable copy. Note the formats and any important characteristics: multiple audio tracks, subtitles, metadata, image transparency, or animation. Work on copies or retain the originals until review is complete.
- Choose the tool and output format. Use FFmpeg for audio/video and ImageMagick for raster images; use a format-specific tool for documents or specialized files. Confirm that the destination supports the features you need.
- Decide whether to copy streams or re-encode. For media, use stream copy only when changing the container is sufficient and the destination supports the existing streams. If a codec change is required, choose lossless encoding when strict fidelity matters and storage allows it; otherwise recognize that lossy re-encoding can reduce quality.
- Run a representative sample first. Include edge cases, such as an animated image, an image with transparency, or a video with several audio tracks. Check playback or rendering, dimensions, duration, streams, and metadata as applicable before starting the full batch.
- Write outputs to a separate destination. Avoid overwriting inputs. Choose collision handling deliberately and preserve subfolders if that matters to your workflow. A desktop project may offer controls for recursion and name collisions, but availability and behavior depend on its version and build.
- Review outputs before cleanup. Open or play representative results and confirm the features you need. Keep the originals until the batch passes those checks.
Check more than appearance
A file can look or sound acceptable while losing a stream, metadata, transparency, or animation. Make checks that match the contents and intended use:
- Audio and video: confirm the expected video and audio streams, track count, subtitles, duration, and playback.
- Metadata: verify the fields that matter. FFmpeg supports explicit stream selection with
-map; its documentation also describes how metadata mapping normally works and how explicit mappings affect behavior. Do not assume that every track or metadata field survived—inspect the output. - Images: compare dimensions and appearance, check alpha transparency where needed, and verify every frame in an animation.
- Batch outputs: confirm filenames, folder placement, and collision handling so files were not skipped or unintentionally overwritten.
When a desktop batch interface may help
The Media Batch Converter repository describes a community desktop application for image, audio, video, and document batches, with recursive folder processing, collision options, and format and quality settings. These are project-described features, not an independent assessment of every release. The repository also says codec availability depends on installed Pillow and FFmpeg builds, JPEG output uses a white background, and transparency is retained only when the destination supports alpha.
