Balance a 3D-printed RC jet with its exact flight battery and normal flight equipment installed, using the center-of-gravity (CG) marks and method specified for that airframe. There is no safe universal CG distance, battery weight, control throw, or launch method for an unspecified jet. After balancing, check side-to-side balance, secure the battery, inspect the aircraft, verify the controls and radio, and follow the model’s maiden-flight and launch instructions.
Find the correct CG for your specific jet
The CG is the point around which the aircraft balances. Its position affects pitch stability and control; a setting that works for one design cannot be copied to a different jet simply because both are 3D-printed EDF models. Use the manual or build guide for the exact aircraft and revision, including its marked datum, specified range, orientation, and support method.

The published examples below show why model-specific instructions matter; they are not interchangeable recommendations.
| Model and source | Documented first-flight balance guidance |
|---|---|
| J-10 EDF 64mm, manual | 80–90 mm behind the main wing leading edge, with the battery installed. Publication year not established. J-10 EDF manual |
| 3D LabPrint F-86A Sabre, 2018 guide | About 5 mm forward of that model’s CG tag for initial flights. The guide says this nose-heavy setting increases stability. 3D LabPrint F-86A Sabre User Guide |
| OWLplane SuperJet 70mm, current product page crawled in 2026 | Approximately 400 g battery weight is listed for that model; it is not a general battery recommendation. OWLplane SuperJet 70mm |
| OWLplane T-33 70mm, current product page crawled in 2026 | Approximately 400 g or more is listed for that model; it is not a general battery recommendation. OWLplane T-33 70mm |
Balance the jet in flight-ready configuration
- Install the normal flight equipment. Assemble the aircraft as it will fly, including the EDF and other flight systems, receiver, and the specified battery. Manuals for the J-10 and Planeprint Seagull direct builders to check balance with the battery or flight equipment installed. J-10 EDF manual; Planeprint Seagull EDF manual
- Use the airframe’s own marked CG points. Follow the manual’s prescribed orientation and support method. A balancing stand is optional if it supports the aircraft at the specified points; the J-10 manual describes using a commercially available stand. J-10 EDF manual
- Adjust battery position only within its intended mount. Move it to reach the specified CG, without leaving it loose or placing it where it cannot be restrained. If the required position cannot be achieved securely, stop and resolve the setup using the model’s documentation rather than guessing or adding ballast unless the documentation calls for it.
- Secure the battery against movement. Use the intended mount and suitable retention such as a correctly fitted strap or hook-and-loop tape as appropriate to the airframe. The F-86 guide warns that a battery shifting backward moves the CG aft and can lead to uncontrollable flight behavior. 3D LabPrint F-86A Sabre User Guide
- Check lateral balance. Check left-to-right balance as well as nose-to-tail CG, following the design’s procedure. Planeprint’s Seagull manual specifically calls out roll-axis balance. Planeprint Seagull EDF manual
Inspect the aircraft and verify the radio and controls
Before handling the model for control checks, make the propulsion system safe according to the aircraft and radio instructions. Keep clear of the EDF intake and exhaust. Then use the model’s specified control throws; there is no general set of throws established for an unspecified printed jet.

- Inspect the airframe, wiring, electrical connections, linkages, and control surfaces. Do not fly with damage, loose parts, or behavior you cannot explain.
- With the transmitter on and the model powered as directed, command each control and confirm the correct surface moves in the correct direction and through the travel specified by the design.
- Check that radio reception is reliable and perform the transmitter’s ground range check at the flying site, using the transmitter manual’s procedure. The J-10 and Lizard manuals include radio and control checks in their preflight guidance. J-10 EDF manual; Lizard EDF manual
- If a control moves the wrong way, reception is uncertain, or any component behaves unexpectedly, do not attempt the maiden flight. Correct the fault and repeat the relevant checks.
Choose the launch method and site the manual specifies
Do not assume that a jet should be hand-launched. Use the exact design’s recommended launch and takeoff procedure. For example, an RC3DPrint guide recommends a takeoff roll rather than a hand launch for its model; that advice does not establish the right method for other jets. RC3DPrint guide
Use a clear flying area with ample room and distance from people and obstructions, and follow local flying-site rules. If the aircraft’s launch requirements, field conditions, or your ability to manage the model are in doubt, postpone the flight or ask an experienced pilot for help.

Match the aircraft to the pilot
Check the design’s stated experience level, not just whether assembly is complete. 3D LabPrint describes its F-86 as not a beginner plane and recommends experience before flying it. That is advice for the F-86, but the practical decision applies to any model: get qualified help when the jet’s handling demands exceed your current experience. 3D LabPrint F-86A Sabre User Guide

Comparing two printed jets?
Compare each design’s documented CG datum and range, all-up weight and battery specification, control throws, launch and landing requirements, and recommended pilot experience. Raw CG millimeters are meaningful only in relation to the airframe’s own datum and geometry; they do not rank the balance of different jets.
