Choose Chromecast if you want your photos on a TV you already own; choose a smart display such as Google Nest Hub if you want a separate, always-visible photo frame with touch and voice controls. Both options can show Google Photos, but they suit different rooms and routines. Exact features and availability depend on the device and region.
Can Chromecast show Google Photos?
Yes. Google lists Chromecast among the eligible destinations for its photo-frame feature, though it cautions that the feature is not available on every device or in every country or region. Check Google’s list of eligible devices and availability before relying on a particular setup.

There are two ways to use a TV: leave Google Photos as the ambient screensaver, or actively cast a selected photo or album from a compatible Android device. The first is for idle display; the second is useful when you want to show something on purpose.
Use ambient display for photos that rotate while the TV is idle
For older Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra devices, configure the ambient screensaver in the Google Home app. Choose Google Photos and select private or shared albums. You need a Google Photos account, and archived photos are not shown by this ambient feature. A factory reset removes ambient screensaver preferences.

Google separates instructions for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer from those for older Chromecast devices. Google TV products use their own Ambient mode settings, so identify your exact device rather than assuming all products called Chromecast have the same menus.
Cast a photo or album when you want to show it now
On a compatible Android phone or tablet, open Google Photos and cast a selected photo or album to Chromecast. The mobile device and Chromecast should be on the same Wi-Fi network. You can swipe through the photos or stop casting in the app. See Google’s instructions for showing photos on a TV with Chromecast.

Supported devices may offer dynamic or basic slideshow modes, along with controls for slideshow speed and attribution. Dynamic slideshows are limited to eligible Google TV devices worldwide with at least 2 GB of RAM. Consult Google’s Google TV Ambient mode instructions for the settings available on your device.

Can a Google Nest Hub be used as a digital photo frame?
Yes. Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max can show selected Google Photos albums in Photo Frame while idle. Set it up in Google Home or on the display, then choose photos, art-gallery images, or clock faces for the idle screen. Google’s Nest Help explains how to set up and manage Photo Frame.

You can move to the next or previous photo by touch or voice, and remove or favorite a displayed photo. Voice controls depend on a supported Assistant language. Unlike casting a slideshow from a phone, Photo Frame is built into the smart display as its idle-screen feature.
Chromecast vs. a smart display: which fits your home?
| Consideration | Chromecast or Google TV | Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | Uses a TV you already have; useful when you want photos on a large shared-room screen. | Has its own screen; suited to a counter, desk, or other spot where a TV is inconvenient. |
| Photo display | Can show an ambient screensaver; compatible Android devices can also cast a photo or album. | Photo Frame shows selected Google Photos albums while the display is idle. |
| Interaction | When casting, use the phone or tablet to swipe through photos or stop casting. | Photo Frame supports touch and, in supported Assistant languages, voice controls. |
| Settings | Older Chromecast ambient settings are in Google Home; Google TV screensaver settings are in Ambient mode. | Photo Frame settings are available in Google Home or on the display. |
| Best fit | You already own a suitable TV and want a large display, either on demand or as an idle screensaver. | You want a dedicated photo frame that is also an interactive smart display. |
The choice is mostly about where and how you want to see the pictures, not whether Google Photos is supported. A TV is the practical choice for a larger shared display if you already have compatible equipment. A Nest Hub is more convenient for a separate screen that stays available in a smaller everyday space. These are usage trade-offs, not a claim that one option has better image quality; that depends on the specific hardware.

What to check before choosing
- Identify the exact device. Distinguish an older Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra from Chromecast with Google TV, a Google TV television, or Google TV Streamer; their setup paths differ.
- Check regional and device availability. Google says photo-frame functionality is not available on all devices or in all countries and regions.
- Decide between idle display and active casting. Ambient mode and Nest Photo Frame rotate photos while idle; casting lets you deliberately put a selected photo or album on the TV.
- Consider where people will interact. Nest Photo Frame offers on-display touch controls and supported voice controls. With Chromecast casting, the phone or tablet is the control.
- Confirm your album workflow. The documented Chromecast ambient setup requires a Google Photos account and lets you choose private or shared albums; archived photos are excluded from that ambient display.
How to decide
Pick Chromecast if the TV is already in the room where you want to share photos and you are comfortable using Google Home, Google TV Ambient mode, or your phone to manage display. Pick Nest Hub if you want a dedicated screen that can serve as a photo frame when idle and offer touch or voice interaction. If compatibility is uncertain, check Google’s eligibility information for your exact model and region before buying or setting up either option.
