On PS4, use the built-in full-console backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. On PS5, protect saves primarily with PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a console-to-console transfer; Sony does not allow PS5 saved data to be copied from the console to a USB drive. Treat game files separately: digital purchases can be downloaded again from Game Library, while compatible USB extended storage or an installed M.2 SSD can save you from downloading large titles again.
Pick the backup method that matches what you need
A save backup and a game-library backup solve different problems. Saved data contains your progress, settings and, in some games, locally stored profiles. Game data is the much larger installation used to run a title. Your account entitles you to redownload digital purchases, but redownloading can take hours, so local game storage is useful even though it is not a substitute for save protection.

| Method | Protects saves | Keeps downloaded game files locally | Needs PlayStation Plus | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 full USB backup | Yes, along with settings and selected content | Yes, when games and apps are included | No | Restoring erases data on the destination PS4; the drive must be FAT32 or exFAT and have at least twice the backup-file capacity |
| PS4/PS5 console transfer | Yes, on supported transfer paths | Transfers supported game data | No | Both systems need the same account, current software, a network connection and uninterrupted power |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Yes | No; games are redownloaded or restored from local storage | Yes | Capacity and features depend on the available PlayStation Plus service; some PS4 saves on PS5 require a manual download |
| USB extended storage | No; it is not a save backup | Yes | No | PS5 games must be copied back to internal console storage before they can be played |
| PS5 M.2 SSD | No; it is not a save backup | Yes, for compatible PS4 and PS5 games | No | It must be a compatible expansion installed in the PS5, not a portable save archive |
If you are retiring a PS4, start with its full USB backup and then use the PS4-to-PS5 transfer process if you are moving to a new console. If you are replacing a PS5, enable cloud synchronization before the old console is wiped and use a transfer or cloud download for the replacement. Keep game storage as a separate decision.

What a PS4 backup can contain
Sony’s PS4 backup tool can create a local image containing saved data, games and applications, screenshots, video clips and system settings. Including games and applications makes the backup much larger but lets you restore locally stored installations instead of downloading every title again. A backup is especially useful before replacing a hard drive, selling a console or moving to another PS4.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The USB drive used for this operation must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Sony requires at least twice as much free capacity as the backup file itself, so check the estimated backup size and leave substantial headroom rather than choosing a drive that barely fits. This requirement applies to the PS4 full-backup function; it is not the same as the requirements for PS5 USB extended storage.
Step-by-step PS4 procedure
- Synchronize trophies. On the PS4, open Trophies, press the OPTIONS button and choose Sync Trophies. Trophies are handled separately from the save files, so do this while the source console is still online.
- Prepare the USB drive. Connect a drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Confirm that its free space is at least twice the capacity Sony’s backup screen reports.
- Open the backup tool. Go to Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
- Select content. Include saved data at minimum. Select games and applications if you want a more complete local copy, and include screenshots, video clips and settings when those matter to you.
- Start and monitor the backup. Keep the console powered until the process finishes. Large game installations can make the operation take considerably longer than a save-only operation.
Restoring a PS4 backup safely
To restore, connect the backup drive to the destination PS4 and use Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore PS4. Sony warns that restoring a PS4 backup erases data already on the destination console. Copy anything you still need from that destination before confirming. A restore is therefore a replacement-console operation, not a way to merge two consoles without consequences.
Do not confuse a full PS4 backup with simply dragging folders to a computer. Use the console’s own backup and restore screens so the system can recognize the archive, its settings and its saved data. Keep the drive disconnected and stored safely after the backup; a single drive left beside a console is not protection against theft, fire or accidental damage.

Protect PS5 saves with cloud storage
Why PS5 does not use a USB save export
Sony’s transfer guidance explicitly states that you cannot copy PS5 saved data from a PS5 console to a USB drive. A USB drive can hold game installations as extended storage, but it cannot serve as a conventional PS5 save archive. Plan around cloud storage or a supported console transfer instead of expecting a folder-copy workaround.
Turn on automatic cloud synchronization
- Open the saved-data controls. On PS5, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose the platform. Select Saved Data (PS5) for PS5 games or Saved Data (PS4) for PS4 games running on the PS5.
- Enable automatic synchronization or auto-upload. Follow the on-screen cloud-storage controls for the selected platform.
- Allow background syncing. Keep the console connected to the internet and enable Rest Mode networking if you want uploads to occur while you are away. Let a game close and the console reach an idle state before assuming its newest progress is online.
PlayStation Plus cloud storage provides up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data. Sony’s guidance also allows up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are service limits, not per-game guarantees, and access depends on having an eligible PlayStation Plus subscription and the features available to your account.
Understand the PS4-on-PS5 difference
PS4 saves used on a PS5 can be uploaded automatically, but Sony notes that they may need to be downloaded manually to PS5 console storage before you can use them. After signing in on the replacement PS5, open the same saved-data area, choose cloud storage and download the relevant PS4 save files. Do not assume that seeing a save in the cloud means it is already present in local console storage.

Download cloud saves to a replacement PS5
Sign in with the account that owns the saves, update the replacement console, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, select the appropriate PS5 or PS4 saved-data category and choose the cloud-storage download command. If a game presents a conflict between console and cloud versions, inspect timestamps and select the version with the progress you intend to keep; downloading an older cloud copy can overwrite newer local progress.
Move data from a PS4 to a PS5
Prepare both consoles
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account on both systems.
- Update both consoles to current system software before starting.
- Connect both to the same network. A wired LAN connection can make a large transfer faster and more stable.
- Keep both consoles connected to power and prevent them from entering an interruption state during the transfer.
Run the transfer
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer.
- Follow the prompts to detect the prepared PS4 and choose the saved data, user data and supported games or applications you want to move.
- Start the transfer and leave both consoles alone until the PS5 reports completion.
Sony warns not to power off either console during this process because data can be damaged or lost. A transfer is not a reason to unplug the PS4 immediately: verify that the PS5 can launch the games and load the expected saves first. Some titles may still require a download or update after the transfer, particularly when the destination does not receive every component of the source installation.
When a transfer is not possible
If the old PS4 cannot boot, cannot connect to the network or is tied to a different account, use the PS4 USB backup if one exists, or rely on saves previously uploaded to PlayStation Plus. Digital purchases remain associated with the owning account, so game licenses can be recovered after signing in even when the original installation cannot be copied.

Keep downloaded games without confusing them with saves
Redownload digital purchases from Game Library
Digital games are tied to the purchasing account. On the destination console, sign in to that account, open Game Library, select the title and choose the download option. This recovers the entitlement even if the old console was erased. It does not restore local progress by itself; the corresponding save must come from a PS4 backup, cloud storage or a supported transfer.
Use PS5 USB extended storage for large installations
Sony specifies a minimum capacity of 250 GB and a maximum of 8 TB for PS5 USB extended storage. A compatible drive can store supported PS4 and PS5 games so you do not have to download them again after moving consoles. The drive is storage for game data, not a PS5 saved-data backup, and its formatting and setup requirements differ from the FAT32/exFAT media used by the PS4 full-backup tool.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- PS4 games: Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from PS5 USB extended storage.
- PS5 games: They can be stored on the extended drive, but must be copied back to the PS5’s internal SSD before playing. Sony describes this copy-back step as necessary for PS5 games.
- Capacity planning: Choose a drive within the 250 GB to 8 TB range and leave room for updates. A drive filled to its limit can prevent installations even when it technically meets the minimum size.
When moving to another PS5, connect the same extended-storage drive and let the console recognize the installed games. You may still need to sign in with the purchasing account and install updates. Keep the drive safely connected while transfers or copy operations are running; disconnecting it during writes can corrupt game data.

Expand a PS5 internally with an M.2 SSD
A compatible M.2 SSD installed in the PS5 can store and launch supported PS4 and PS5 games. It is useful when you want fast internal capacity without repeatedly copying PS5 titles from USB. It remains an expansion-storage choice, not a portable archive of saved data. Continue using cloud synchronization or console transfer for saves, even when every game is installed on the M.2 drive.
Handle PlayStation Plus games that are streamed or downloaded
Streaming changes where the save lives
Sony states that when a PlayStation Plus game is streamed, the saved data is stored on PlayStation. You are not writing that streamed session’s save to the local console in the same way as a downloaded installation. This matters when switching hardware or changing how you play the title.
Downloaded versions use console storage
When a PlayStation Plus game is downloaded, its saved data is saved to the console storage of the PS5 or PS4. If you move between a streamed version and a downloaded version, upload the save to online storage and then download it to the other device. Use the same account and check that the game edition is compatible; a save from one version may not appear in another edition’s menu.

Before wiping or selling a PS4
- Sync trophies from Trophies > OPTIONS > Sync Trophies.
- Run Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up to a correctly formatted, adequately sized USB drive.
- Confirm that saved data is selected and include games and applications if avoiding redownloads is important.
- If moving to PS5, update both systems and complete the network transfer before resetting the PS4.
- Test at least one important game save on the destination system.
Before wiping or replacing a PS5
- Open the saved-data settings for both PS5 and PS4 categories and verify automatic sync or auto-upload is enabled.
- Leave the console online in Rest Mode long enough for recent sessions to upload.
- On the replacement PS5, sign in to the same account and download or transfer saves before deleting the old console’s local data.
- Move large game installations to compatible USB extended storage if you want to avoid downloading them again; remember that PS5 titles must be copied to internal storage to play.
If a save is missing
- Check that you are signed in to the account that created the save.
- Check whether the title was streamed or downloaded, since the save location differs.
- For PS4 saves on PS5, open cloud storage and perform the manual download to console storage.
- Compare cloud and local timestamps before replacing a newer local file with an older cloud copy.
- If the source was PS4, look for the console’s full backup rather than a PS5 USB save export; Sony does not support exporting PS5 saves to USB.
If a game is missing but the purchase is valid
Open Game Library on the destination console and sign in to the purchasing account. Download the title again or reconnect the USB extended-storage drive containing its installation. A missing installation does not prove that the license or save was lost; installation data and saved data are separate recovery tasks.
A practical two-layer backup plan
For a PS4, keep one verified full-console USB backup and, when available, cloud synchronization as a second copy. For a PS5, treat PlayStation Plus cloud storage as the save layer and USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD as the game-installation layer. Before a console change, perform a final sync, transfer or cloud download, then launch a few games to verify progress. This separation prevents a common mistake: assuming that a drive containing every game also contains the PS5 saves that matter most.
