Back up your files to a separate drive or cloud location before resetting, restoring, or reinstalling Windows 11, then check that the copy opens and contains the folders you need. Recovery options do not all affect files the same way. If your PC uses BitLocker encryption, find its recovery key before you begin.
Back up first—and keep the copy separate
Microsoft warns that some Windows recovery options can cause data loss and advises backing up important files before proceeding. A backup on an external drive, USB flash drive, or cloud location gives you a separate copy if the recovery process removes or rolls back files. Microsoft’s recovery-options guide recommends backing up before recovery; its backup and recovery guidance explains available Windows tools.

Find every folder you need
Start with Documents, Pictures, and Desktop, but also include files you saved elsewhere—for example, a work folder on another drive or a project directory outside your user profile. Windows Backup can sync selected folders to OneDrive, while File History can save personal files to an external drive or network location.

Choose a destination Windows recovery will not erase
Use an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or cloud location such as OneDrive. Keep a physical backup disconnected from the PC once the copy is complete. If using OneDrive, confirm that the folders you need are selected, the files have finished syncing, and you can access the account. Microsoft says a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage; the allowance may change, so check the current account details if space is tight.

Verify the copy before proceeding
Open a few copied files from the destination and check that the expected folders and recent versions are there. For a cloud backup, confirm the files appear in OneDrive and are accessible through your account. This practical check can catch an incomplete copy before recovery starts.
Choose a backup method that fits your files
| Method | What it does | Check before recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Backup with OneDrive | Syncs selected folders to OneDrive so they can be accessed again by signing in. | Confirm the needed folders are selected, storage is sufficient, syncing is complete, and you can sign in. A free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage, according to Microsoft’s Windows Backup guidance. |
| File History | Saves personal files to an external drive or network location and can keep versions. | Make sure the destination is available, the relevant folders are covered, and you can access it if Windows will not start. |
| Manual copy to external USB storage | Copies chosen files to an external hard drive or USB flash drive. Microsoft lists these as backup destinations before reinstalling from installation media. | Choose enough space for the files, confirm the copy, and keep the device separate from the PC being recovered. |
| Recovery drive | Provides recovery files to help restore Windows; it does not contain your personal documents or photos. | Use it as recovery media only, alongside a separate personal-file backup. |
Microsoft does not prescribe a universal drive capacity for these backups. Choose a destination with enough room for the files you intend to protect.

- Keep my files: Reinstalls Windows while keeping personal files, but removes apps and settings. It is not a substitute for a separate backup.
- Remove everything: Removes personal files, apps, and settings.
The separate Cloud download and Local reinstall choices describe where Windows installation files come from: Cloud download fetches a fresh copy, while Local reinstall uses files already on the PC. They do not determine whether personal files are kept; that is controlled by the keep/remove choice. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC instructions.

Point-in-time restore
Restoring the PC to an earlier point can undo changes made afterward, including files created since that point. Microsoft says files stored in OneDrive or another cloud service are not affected by that rollback. Check Microsoft’s current recovery guidance for the option available on your device.
System Restore
System Restore rolls back system files and settings, rather than personal files. Even so, save important files separately before recovery so they are protected if you choose a different option or encounter another problem.

Reinstalling from installation media
Back up personal data you want to keep before reinstalling Windows from installation media. Microsoft’s instructions name an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or cloud location as possible destinations. See Microsoft’s installation-media reinstall guide.

Find your BitLocker recovery key before starting
An encrypted device may ask for its BitLocker recovery key during recovery. Locate the key and make sure you can access it from another device or a printed copy before starting; a key saved only on the PC you are recovering may not be available when needed. Microsoft’s recovery-options guidance and Reset your PC instructions note that an encrypted device may require this key.
