To set up an iPad (9th generation), connect it to Wi-Fi, choose whether to transfer data or start fresh, sign in with your Apple Account, secure it with a passcode and Touch ID, turn on Find My, and install the newest iPadOS version offered under Settings. The model has a Home button with Touch ID and a Lightning port, so check generation-specific compatibility before buying accessories.
What to prepare before you turn it on
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Your Apple Account credentials. Signing in lets you use services including the App Store, iCloud, and Messages; it does not require you to buy paid iCloud storage.
- If you are moving from another device, keep that device nearby or have the relevant backup available.
- If a school or employer manages the iPad, follow its enrollment instructions.
Apple lists a Lightning to USB-C cable and a 20W USB-C power adapter as included with the iPad (9th generation). The cable’s USB-C end plugs into the adapter, and its Lightning end plugs into the iPad. The tablet charges through Lightning. Check what came with your device before buying a replacement charger. Apple’s iPad (9th generation) technical specifications also list a 10.2-inch display and up to 10 hours of web use over Wi-Fi or video playback. That is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee of the runtime of an older individual iPad.

Choose how to transfer your data
Press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. During setup, decide how you want to move content before continuing past the transfer choices.

Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in
Join a Wi-Fi network when prompted, then sign in with your Apple Account. If this is a Wi-Fi + Cellular model, cellular service is a separate, optional setup choice that depends on a carrier plan and may involve fees; the model has a SIM tray. Review which iCloud features you want to use, such as syncing photos, files, and contacts. Syncing selected information is not the same as having a complete device backup, so check the backup settings separately rather than assuming one enabled sync option protects everything.
Set a passcode, Touch ID, and Find My
Secure access with Touch ID
Create a device passcode when prompted, then enroll fingerprints. The ninth-generation iPad uses Touch ID in its Home button, not Face ID. You can add or manage fingerprints later at Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. Apple says Touch ID can unlock the iPad, authenticate in supported apps, and authorize purchases; Touch ID data stays on the device. See Apple’s setup basics.

Enable Find My and choose iCloud features
In your Apple Account’s Find My settings, turn on Find My iPad. Apple explains: “When Find My iPad is on, you can locate your iPad if it’s ever lost or stolen.” Then select the iCloud features you want for your photos, files, contacts, and other important data. Review backup separately so your recovery plan matches what you need to keep.

Apple’s current iPadOS 27 compatibility list includes iPad (9th generation). To check what is available for your particular device, open Settings > General > Software Update. Install the newest version offered there; the version shown on the iPad is the practical guide to its available update. Apple’s iPadOS 27 compatibility guide lists supported models.

Before updating, connect to Wi-Fi, make sure there is enough free storage, and connect the iPad to power. If an update does not appear or fails, check storage and network access, then retry while connected to power. Apple also identifies compatibility, network or server issues, and incomplete downloads as possible causes. If wireless updating still fails, follow Apple’s computer-update instructions in its iPadOS update troubleshooting guide.
Make the iPad comfortable for everyday use
Once setup and updating are complete, tune the device for its main user: adjust text size and display settings, review notification and privacy permissions, and organize the Home Screen around frequently used apps. Accessibility options include VoiceOver, Zoom, spoken content, and Switch Control. During initial setup on a Home-button iPad, triple-clicking Home can turn on VoiceOver; a three-finger double-tap can turn on Zoom. Apple lists these setup options in its iPad setup guide.

Check compatibility before buying accessories
Apple Pencil (1st generation) for handwriting or drawing
Apple lists Apple Pencil (1st generation) as compatible with iPad (9th generation). To pair it, remove the Pencil’s cap, plug it into the iPad’s Lightning connector, and tap Pair when prompted. It is optional and sold separately. Confirm the generation on the product listing rather than choosing a Pencil based only on the iPad name. Smart Keyboard for sustained typing
Apple lists Smart Keyboard as compatible with iPad (9th generation). It attaches through the iPad’s Smart Connector and can be useful if you expect to write longer documents; it is not required for setup. Check the model name carefully when shopping.
