PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart before the closure date: record every entitlement, download important games and updates through the official store while your account still works, copy saves separately, and keep two verified copies on different storage devices. A backup protects files you can legally obtain; it cannot preserve a game that depends on a server, launcher authentication, or a license check that later disappears.
Store closures usually remove purchases, code redemption, demos, and new downloads first. Existing purchases may remain downloadable for a while, but that is a policy decision rather than a permanent guarantee. Treat continued redownload access as a window for making your own archive, not as a substitute for one.

What a storefront shutdown actually changes
A storefront can stop accepting new purchases while leaving previously purchased software available temporarily. The exact result depends on the platform, region, account status, and the operator’s terms. A closure may disable:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- New game, expansion, and downloadable-content purchases.
- Redemption of new download codes.
- New demos, trials, free-to-play downloads, or free content claims.
- Updates, patches, or account services at a later date.
Previously bought software may continue to redownload, but the period is not necessarily permanent. Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS example illustrates the distinction. Nintendo ended purchases on March 27, 2023, at 5:00 PM Pacific Time. Its support FAQ says: “As of March 27, 2023 at 5:00 PM Pacific Time, it is no longer possible to make purchases in Nintendo eShop for the Wii U system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.” The same FAQ says: “For the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC and receive software updates on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems.”

That wording does not promise indefinite access. It means an account holder who already bought a title can still use the platform’s download path for now, while purchases and code redemption are closed. Make your first local copy while both the storefront and the account are functioning.
Do not assume that a family account, a physical disc, and a digital entitlement are interchangeable. A purchase may be tied to one account, region, platform generation, or edition. A disc may provide a license to use its own data but not grant a digital edition or downloadable expansion.
Separate the four things you are preserving
“Back up my games” can mean several different kinds of data. Preserve each one deliberately:
Recommended Free Tools
- Game data: the installed files, official installer, or platform backup archive.
- Save data: your progress, profiles, settings, and local world files.
- Entitlement evidence: account identity, receipts, product keys, and purchase history.
- Dependencies: patches, launchers, activation limits, controllers, and servers needed to run the title.
A copied game folder without its saves is not a complete personal archive. A save backup without a way to reinstall the game is equally incomplete. A receipt does not replace either file set, but it can help support staff recover an entitlement when an interface or account system changes.
Step 1: Inventory the library before downloading
Begin with an account-level inventory rather than browsing only the games currently installed. Export the purchase history if the service provides an export; otherwise record it manually and capture screenshots showing ownership.
Record these fields for every title
- Title and platform or console generation.
- Account email or account identifier used for the purchase.
- Country or region, language, and edition.
- Base game, season pass, expansions, and individual downloadable content.
- Physical-disc ownership, if relevant, separately from digital ownership.
- Purchase date, order number, receipt, and any product key.
- Installed version, latest available patch, and download date.
- Save location and whether saves are local, cloud-synchronized, or both.
- Required launcher, sign-in, digital-rights management, or activation limit.
- Whether the game is offline-capable, intermittently authenticated, or online-service-dependent.
Use a spreadsheet and a folder of screenshots or exported receipts. Keep a plain-text manifest with each archive. A useful filename pattern is Platform_Title_Edition_Region_Version_Date; avoid relying only on a storefront’s current display name, which can change.

Step 2: Download while the account still works
Install each high-value game at least once before the shutdown. This confirms that the entitlement is usable on the current hardware and reveals where the platform stores the files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Sign in to the account that owns the game and verify the region and edition.
- Install the title and every owned expansion or downloadable-content item you want to preserve.
- Apply the newest official update available before the closure. Record the version number and date.
- Locate the resulting files, installer, or platform backup archive. Use the platform’s official backup, transfer, or offline-installer function first when one exists.
- Copy the files into a clearly named archive folder and add a manifest containing title, platform, edition, region, version, date downloaded, and dependencies.
- Keep the original account and receipt information with the archive; do not remove the account from the device until the copy has been checked.
Do not wait for a final day announcement. A server outage, account lock, expired payment method, failed console, or overloaded download service can remove your practical access before the published date. Nintendo’s post-closure policy shows why the order matters: purchasing and code redemption ended even though prior purchases remained redownloadable for a period.
Step 3: Back up saves independently
Save data is often stored separately from the main game and may not be included in an installer or platform backup. Use the platform’s own transfer and cloud-save features where available, then retain a second local copy when the platform permits it.
Console and account features
Follow the exact transfer procedure for the console generation. Nintendo documents account-linked purchase transfer separately from its Save Data Cloud feature for Nintendo Switch Online members. Moving purchases to another console does not automatically mean that every save has been copied, and a cloud save is not the same thing as a local game archive.
PC saves
Locate the title’s save directory, which may be in a user profile, a documents folder, an application-data directory, or a game-specific folder. Copy saves while the game is closed so that synchronization does not overwrite the newest file. If a launcher synchronizes saves, allow it to finish, then retain a dated local snapshot.
Protect save versions
- Keep at least one dated save snapshot before major updates or migrations.
- Do not overwrite the only copy with a newly synchronized, empty, or corrupted profile.
- For games with separate profiles or worlds, verify that each appears in the backup.
- Document whether the save requires a particular game version or downloadable content.
Step 4: Keep two independent copies
Use the three-part pattern of a working copy plus two backups, with the backups on different devices. A practical arrangement is an external HDD or SSD as the primary local archive and a second drive or reputable cloud backup as the second copy. Disconnect one local copy after the backup finishes or store it in another location so a surge, theft, malware infection, or accidental deletion cannot reach both copies.

Plan capacity from the actual installed library, not from the number of titles. Add the space used by updates, expansions, installers, save snapshots, manifests, and future downloads, then leave spare capacity for temporary restore operations. If the archive nearly fills a drive, maintenance and verification become harder.
External HDD versus USB SSD
| Characteristic | External HDD | USB SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity per dollar | Usually better for large libraries | Usually costs more for the same capacity |
| Speed | Slower copying and restoring | Faster copying and restoring |
| Noise and vibration | Has moving parts and may be audible | Silent and resistant to mechanical shock |
| Portability | Suitable for storage, but handle carefully while operating | Convenient for frequent transport |
| Best use | Large, infrequently accessed archive | Frequent restores, travel, or a compact second copy |
Neither type is automatically permanent. Drives can fail, cables can be lost, and an unverified copy can contain silent corruption. Choose a drive size that accommodates the complete archive with headroom, and label each device with its role and the date of the latest successful verification.
Local and cloud second copies
| Option | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Second local drive | No recurring provider access is needed and restores are fast | Both devices can be lost in the same fire, theft, or flood unless stored separately |
| Cloud backup | Provides geographic redundancy | Requires an active provider account, sufficient upload bandwidth, and continued access under that provider’s terms |
A cloud copy is not a replacement for account entitlement. It stores the bytes you upload; it does not guarantee that a platform will accept an old license, installer, or save format later.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Installer archives and platform backups are not identical
| Archive type | What it preserves | What may still be required |
|---|---|---|
| Official installer or portable installation files | Potentially a more self-contained copy that can survive a client interface change | Account authentication, activation, patches, a compatible operating system, or a product key |
| Platform backup or console transfer archive | Platform-specific files, metadata, and sometimes account relationships | The original console ecosystem, account, client, hardware, or transfer procedure |
Use an official method whenever possible. Do not assume that copying an installed directory creates a portable installer. Some clients store licenses, encryption keys, or configuration outside the game folder.
Step 5: Verify that the archive can be restored
Copying without testing is only an assumption. Verification should be part of the backup, not an optional final check.
- Compare file counts and total sizes between the source and each destination. For a stronger check, generate and compare cryptographic checksums for the archive files.
- Safely eject the drive, reconnect it, and open the manifest from the reconnected device.
- Restore one small representative game, installer, and save set to a test location rather than overwriting the working installation.
- Launch the restored game offline where the title supports offline play. Confirm that the expected save, profile, downloadable content, and language appear.
- Record the restore date, result, required sign-in, and any missing dependency in the manifest.
Repeat a restore test after replacing hardware, changing operating systems, migrating to a new console, or making a large archive update. If checksums differ, recopy from the known-good source and investigate the drive, cable, or file system before deleting anything.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Step 6: Record dependencies and classify risk
For each title, write down what must still exist for the backed-up files to run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Offline-capable: starts and loads a local save without a continuing network connection after legitimate installation and activation.
- Intermittently authenticated: may run offline but periodically requires a launcher sign-in, license refresh, or activation check.
- Online-service-dependent: requires a live multiplayer, matchmaking, account, or content server.
Also record controller middleware, operating-system requirements, graphics or runtime dependencies, activation limits, region restrictions, required patches, and whether downloadable content is needed for a save to load correctly.
A local archive preserves bytes, not services. If a game requires a server that is shut down, a launcher that no longer authenticates, or a license check whose service has disappeared, restoring the files may not make the game playable. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission notes that digital-store terms may allow access to be severed and that online support for older games may be withdrawn. Treat online-only titles as a separate preservation problem: document the service dependency and preserve any lawful offline mode, configuration, or local content while it remains available.

When redownloads remain available after closure
Download the most important titles first even if the operator says redownloads will continue “for the foreseeable future.” Prioritize games that are large, delisted, dependent on a single account, or difficult to replace. Keep receipts and screenshots because a changed store interface may make an old entitlement harder to find.
When a launcher is required
Preserve the installer or platform archive, the account identifier, product key, activation details, and the last working launcher version if the platform’s terms and software permit retaining it. Mark the title as intermittently authenticated unless you have verified that it runs without a network check.
When a console uses removable storage
Use only the removable-storage backup or transfer method documented for that console. A raw card copy may be encrypted, account-bound, or unusable in another device. Keep the card as one copy only; add a second independent device and test a restore.

Legal and practical boundaries
Back up files obtained through your own account, official downloads, or lawful physical media. Platform terms, regional law, and copyright exceptions vary, so do not assume that every personal-copy method is permitted everywhere.
Nintendo identifies its eShop and website as authorized download channels and states: “Uploading or downloading pirated copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” Do not download ROMs or unauthorized copies to fill gaps in an archive. If you cannot obtain a title through an authorized channel, record the ownership evidence and dependency information rather than substituting an unlicensed download.
Failure modes and recovery steps
The download button is gone
Check the original account, region, purchase history, and platform generation. A title may be delisted, hidden from search, or owned by a different account. Use saved receipts and screenshots when contacting official support. Do not treat a family member’s account as proof that your own account owns the game.
The copied game will not launch
Compare the manifest with the restored files, reinstall the documented patch, and check for a launcher, activation, runtime, or region requirement. If the error is a server or license check, label the title online-dependent rather than repeatedly copying the same files.
The save is missing or appears empty
Close the game and synchronization client, restore the dated save snapshot to the documented location, and confirm that the profile and downloadable content match the saved game. Keep the original save untouched until the restored copy loads correctly.
The drive is full or unreliable
Remove duplicate installers only after verifying that another copy exists. Replace a drive that disconnects, reports errors, or fails checksum comparisons; never make it the only archive while troubleshooting.
Maintain the archive after the shutdown
Update the inventory whenever you buy a game, expansion, or product key. Add the new files to both backup destinations, verify them, and record the version and date. Once or twice a year, reconnect the disconnected copy, open its manifest, check available capacity, and restore a small title or installer. Keep one copy disconnected again after testing.
Prioritize future work by risk: titles with no replacement store, a single account owner, large or rare downloadable content, expiring activation, or online services that are already being wound down deserve earlier verification than easily replaced games.
