Back up Xbox saves and captures as two separate jobs. Supported game saves are stored on the console and synchronized with Xbox cloud storage when the console is online. Screenshots and video clips are managed in the Captures app; copy anything important to OneDrive or a USB external storage device because captures kept on the Xbox network are subject to a 90-day deletion policy.
This guide explains what is protected automatically, what you must export yourself, how to move your data to another console, and how to avoid the common account and synchronization mistakes that can overwrite progress.

What is backed up automatically—and what is not
| Data | Where it lives | Your action | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supported game saves | Local console storage plus Xbox cloud synchronization | Keep the console online and use the same Microsoft/Xbox account on the other console | Conflicts can occur when local and cloud copies both changed |
| Screenshots and video captures | Captures app and, when uploaded, the Xbox network | Export or move them from the Captures app to OneDrive or an external storage device | Xbox announced that captures stored on the Xbox network are deleted after 90 days |
The save system is designed for continuity between consoles, while captures are media files that need an explicit backup destination. Treating a clip as if it were a cloud-synchronized save is the easiest way to lose it.

Microsoft describes Game Saves as local-first storage with cloud synchronization. While you play, the console writes progress locally. When it has a connection, it can upload newer local data, download newer cloud data, or ask you to resolve a conflict if both copies changed. If you play offline, progress remains local until the connection is restored.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cloud synchronization applies to supported titles. It is not a general-purpose file backup for every folder on the console, and it does not replace an export of screenshots or clips.
What happens when you change consoles
On a replacement console, sign in with the same Microsoft/Xbox account and launch the game while connected to the internet. The system compares the local data on that console with the cloud copy and synchronizes the appropriate version. Allow the process to finish before starting a long play session or turning the console off.
Why the account matters
Cloud saves are associated with the account that created them. Signing in with a different account can make a game appear to have no progress even when the original data is still associated with the original account. Verify the account before troubleshooting the save itself.

Back up and move game saves safely
- Connect the console to the internet. A connection gives Xbox the opportunity to upload newer local progress and obtain the cloud copy needed on another console.
- Sign in to the account that owns the save. Use the same Microsoft/Xbox account on the destination console.
- Open the game and wait for synchronization to complete. Do not switch consoles while a synchronization message is still active. The exact wording and timing can vary by title and console state.
- Exit the game normally. This gives the console a clear point at which the latest local changes can be synchronized.
- On the destination console, launch the same title while online. Let Xbox compare local and cloud data before playing far enough to create a competing save.
- Confirm the expected progress. Check the character, chapter, level, or other in-game marker that matters to you before continuing.
There is no separate “export save to USB” procedure described for this cloud-synchronized system in the cited Microsoft documentation. The practical protection is a completed local-to-cloud synchronization followed by the same-account sign-in on the other console.

Resolve a game-save conflict without losing progress
A conflict means Xbox found meaningful changes in both the local and cloud copies. The system cannot safely guess which one you intended to keep, so it presents a choice.
Before choosing a copy
- Stop playing on both consoles. Continuing can create additional changes and make the choice harder.
- Note the last known play session, chapter, level, or achievement on each console.
- Compare the timestamps or progress indicators shown in the conflict dialog.
- Decide which copy represents the progress you actually want, not merely which device is newer.
Choose deliberately
Select the local or cloud version only after comparing those details. Microsoft’s sync-flow guidance warns that the newest device is not automatically the correct choice: a newer timestamp can represent an unwanted test session, an incomplete load, or progress made on the wrong console.
If you are unsure
Do not confirm a destructive choice just to dismiss the dialog. Record what each copy contains, cancel if the interface permits it, and seek help through Xbox support with the account and title information. The documented sync flow does not promise a third recoverable version after one copy is replaced.
What happens when you play offline
Offline play keeps changes on the console. Those changes are waiting to be synchronized when the connection returns; they are not automatically available on another console while the first console remains offline.

Back up screenshots and clips before the 90-day deadline
Xbox announced on September 27, 2023, that “Game captures stored on the Xbox network will be deleted after 90 days.” The announcement also says you can move, manage, and bulk-upload captures from the Captures app and back up media you want to keep indefinitely.
The 90-day rule concerns captures stored on the Xbox network. It does not turn your local media library, a OneDrive copy, or a copy on an external storage device into a 90-day archive. Export important media instead of relying on the network copy as permanent storage.
Export captures from the Xbox Captures app
Xbox’s documented navigation path is:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open My games & apps.
- Select See all.
- Open Apps.
- Choose Captures.
From the Captures app, use its backup or management flow to select individual items or handle media in bulk. Xbox identifies two supported destinations: OneDrive and an external storage device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a small number of files
- Open the item in Captures.
- Choose the available move, copy, or upload action.
- Select OneDrive or the connected external storage destination.
- Wait for the operation to finish before deleting the Xbox-network copy.
- Check the destination from another device when the media is irreplaceable.
For a large library
- Use the Captures app’s bulk-management or bulk-upload controls rather than opening every clip individually.
- Group the work by date, game, or event so you can see what has been exported.
- Keep the console connected until the bulk operation completes.
- Verify that the destination contains the expected files before treating the Xbox-network copy as disposable.
Automatic OneDrive backup for future captures
Xbox’s announcement says the Captures app can enable automatic OneDrive backup for future captures. Configure that option from the Xbox Captures app, not from a general Windows or OneDrive screenshot setting. Automatic backup is useful for new media, but it does not remove the need to review older captures already in the library.

Use OneDrive correctly for Xbox captures
OneDrive is the official cloud destination highlighted by Xbox for capture backups. It is convenient when you want an off-console copy that can be reached from other devices and when you prefer an automatic workflow for future captures.
There is an important naming trap. A separate Microsoft Support article says the general OneDrive setting called “Save screenshots to OneDrive” is no longer available and advises ensuring that the Pictures folder is included in OneDrive for that workflow. That guidance concerns OneDrive’s general screenshot-folder behavior; Xbox capture backup is configured in the Xbox Captures app. Do not expect the missing general setting to control Xbox clips.
OneDrive verification checklist
- Configure the backup from Xbox button → My games & apps → See all → Apps → Captures.
- Confirm that the correct Microsoft account is active.
- After an upload, check OneDrive from another device or its web interface.
- Keep the original capture until you have confirmed the uploaded copy opens correctly.
Use a USB external storage device for an offline copy
Xbox explicitly names an external storage device as a capture-backup destination. This is the direct option for readers who want a physical copy that does not depend on an internet connection to view later.

The cited Xbox material does not specify a current retail model, filesystem, or minimum capacity for this capture workflow. Before buying, verify the drive listing against your console, the connection it supports, and the amount of video you intend to keep. Capacity needs vary substantially with clip length and resolution, so no single minimum can be inferred from the documentation.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Practical external-drive workflow
- Connect a compatible USB external storage device to the console.
- Open Xbox button → My games & apps → See all → Apps → Captures.
- Choose the media-management or backup action and select the external device.
- Move or copy a small test batch first.
- Disconnect only after the operation reports completion.
- Open the files on a computer or another compatible device before deleting the Xbox-network versions.
An external drive is an offline copy, not an automatic second cloud. Protect it from loss, damage, and accidental deletion, and consider keeping especially valuable clips in a second location.
OneDrive or external storage: which fits your backup plan?
| Decision factor | OneDrive | External storage device |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing cost and capacity | Not stated in the Xbox documentation cited here; depends on your OneDrive arrangement | One-time hardware purchase; capacity and model are not specified by the cited Xbox material |
| Internet dependence | Requires a connection to upload and access the cloud copy | Useful as an offline copy after the transfer completes |
| Automatic future uploads | Xbox offers automatic OneDrive backup for future captures through the Captures app | Automatic behavior is not stated; use the Captures app’s move or copy workflow |
| Best fit | People who want cloud access across devices and less manual handling | People who want a physical archive or a copy independent of cloud access |
| Verification | Check the uploaded item from another device | Open the transferred files on another device before erasing the source |
You can use both: OneDrive for convenient ongoing uploads and an external device for a periodic offline archive. The Xbox documentation names both as destinations but does not prescribe a particular retention schedule beyond the 90-day Xbox-network warning.
A maintenance routine that prevents surprises
After important game sessions
- Reconnect the console if you played offline.
- Let the game-save synchronization finish before switching consoles.
- Resolve any conflict while you still know which session contains the desired progress.
After recording important media
- Open Captures and upload or move irreplaceable clips and screenshots.
- Use bulk tools for a group of files rather than leaving the entire library on the Xbox network.
- Confirm the destination copy before deleting anything.
Before selling, repairing, or resetting a console
- Sign in with the account that owns the game saves and synchronize while online.
- Check a replacement console with the same account before wiping the old one.
- Export captures to OneDrive or external storage and verify them independently.
Troubleshooting common backup failures
The new console shows no save
First check the account, then the internet connection, then whether the original console completed synchronization. A game played offline may still have its newest progress only locally. Reconnect the original console, launch the title, and allow synchronization to finish before trying the destination console again.
A sync-conflict dialog appears
Stop playing, compare timestamps and in-game progress, and choose the copy you intend to keep. Do not select a version solely because it is on the newer console.
A screenshot or clip is missing from the backup
Return to the Captures app and confirm that the item was actually selected for upload or move. Check the destination account and open the destination folder from another device. A capture that remains only on the Xbox network is exposed to the announced 90-day deletion policy.
Automatic OneDrive backup is not doing what you expect
Check the setting in the Xbox Captures app. The general OneDrive “Save screenshots to OneDrive” setting is a separate workflow and is no longer available according to Microsoft Support. For that general workflow, Microsoft advises including the Pictures folder in OneDrive; that advice does not configure Xbox Captures.
The external drive is not suitable
The cited Xbox announcement does not provide a universal model, filesystem, or capacity requirement. Verify the drive’s compatibility with your console and intended capture volume before relying on it, and test with a small transfer first.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Supported Xbox game saves use local storage plus cloud synchronization; keep the console online and use the same account on the replacement console.
- Captures are handled separately in the Captures app.
- Xbox-network captures are subject to a 90-day deletion policy announced in 2023.
- OneDrive and an external storage device are the official capture-backup destinations identified by Xbox.
- When local and cloud saves conflict, compare progress and timestamps and choose intentionally.
