How to Back Up Ubisoft Connect Save Files Before an Online Service Shuts Down

Back up your Ubisoft Connect PC saves by finishing an in-game save, disabling cloud-save synchronization, closing the game and launcher, and copying the complete game folder from C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames<account-ID> to a dated USB archive. Keep the original files untouched, verify the copy, and make a second copy elsewhere if the progress matters. A shutdown notice applies to specific games and platforms, so confirm Ubisoft’s notice for your title rather than assuming every game is affected in the same way.

What a Ubisoft Connect shutdown means for your saves

“Online service shutdown” does not automatically mean that every part of a game stops working. Ubisoft’s 27 October 2023 announcement scheduled additional service decommissions for 25 January 2024 and said they would “only affect certain online functionalities.” Ubisoft also stated that purchased games would remain playable. Those statements applied to the games and platforms listed in that notice, not to every Ubisoft title.

The practical risk is that a service may no longer synchronize cloud saves, authenticate an online feature, or provide account access needed by a particular game. Availability can therefore differ by title, edition and platform. Check the current Ubisoft notice and the game’s support page for your exact combination before attempting a restore or platform transfer.

Account access is a separate risk from a server shutdown. Ubisoft Terms of Use 5.0, section 8.3, states: “In the event of termination of your Account, you will no longer have access to your Account and you will lose all your save files and in-game progression related to the Services.” A local copy gives you a recoverable file set while you still have access to the PC and account; it does not preserve online entitlements or guarantee that a game will accept the files after a service change.

Where Ubisoft Connect stores PC saves

The default Ubisoft Connect PC save location is:

C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames<account-ID>

Inside the folder named for your Ubisoft account ID are game-specific subfolders, commonly identified by numeric folder names. The account folder can contain saves for more than one Ubisoft game, so do not assume that the first numeric folder you see is the title you want.

Identify the correct folder

  • Note the Ubisoft account currently used to launch the game.
  • Open the savegames folder and then the folder bearing that account’s ID.
  • Compare the numeric subfolders’ recent modified dates with the time you last saved in the game.
  • Use the title’s Ubisoft support instructions when the folder mapping is unclear; formats and locations can vary by game.

Do not change filenames, edit files, or move a folder while you are still trying to identify it. Preserve the original structure so that a later restore can put files back exactly where the game expects them.

What you need before starting

  • A Windows PC with the game installed and the Ubisoft Connect account that owns or launches it.
  • A USB flash drive or other removable drive with enough free space for the complete save folder.
  • A second destination, such as another drive or a cloud-storage account, if the progress is valuable.
  • The game’s title, edition, platform or store version, Ubisoft account, and the date of the backup.

A USB drive is useful because it is physically independent of Ubisoft’s servers and account synchronization. Cloud storage can provide a second location, but it should not be your only copy: access to it still depends on the storage provider and the account used to reach it.

Step-by-step: create a safe Ubisoft Connect PC backup

1. Finish a final in-game save

  1. Start the game from the Ubisoft Connect PC account that contains your progress.
  2. Save normally using the game’s own save command or checkpoint system.
  3. Wait for any save indicator to finish, then exit to the desktop and confirm that the game process has closed.

Saving before copying captures the latest deliberate progress instead of a partially written file. If the title has several save slots, decide whether you need the entire game folder or only a particular slot; copying the complete relevant folder is the safer default.

2. Disable cloud-save synchronization

In Ubisoft Connect PC, turn off cloud-save synchronization using Ubisoft’s current support procedure before you manipulate or replace local files. The exact label or menu placement can change between launcher versions, so follow the current Ubisoft instructions rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Disabling synchronization prevents a later launch from treating an older cloud copy as authoritative and overwriting the local files you intend to preserve. It also avoids a conflict while you are checking or restoring a backup. Leave synchronization disabled until you have finished testing a restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Close Ubisoft Connect completely

Exit the game first, then close Ubisoft Connect. If the launcher remains active in the Windows notification area, use its exit command as well. Copying while a game or launcher is writing a save can produce an incomplete or inconsistent archive.

4. Open the save directory

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames.
  3. Open the folder named for your Ubisoft account ID.
  4. Locate the game-specific numeric subfolder using recent modified dates and the game’s support documentation.

If Ubisoft Connect was installed in a non-default location, use the launcher’s documented installation path and search for its savegames directory. Do not create a replacement folder in a different location and expect the game to find it automatically.

5. Copy the complete folder to a dated USB archive

  1. Insert the USB flash drive and create a clearly named folder such as Ubisoft-Saves-2026-10-19.
  2. Copy the entire relevant account/game save folder into that dated folder. Copy rather than move.
  3. Wait for Windows to finish copying before disconnecting the drive.
  4. Keep the original save folder in its original location until verification is complete.

Copying preserves the source files and their format. A backup made by dragging a folder to the USB drive is preferable to opening files and exporting them, because many games expect their original directory structure and metadata.

6. Make an independent second copy

For high-value progress, duplicate the dated archive to another physical drive or to a cloud-storage account. Treat that second location as additional protection, not as a replacement for the offline copy. A single USB drive can be lost, damaged or accidentally reformatted; a single cloud account can become inaccessible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Verify the archive

  • Open the copied folder on the USB drive and confirm that it contains the same subfolders and files as the source.
  • Check that the newest files have modified dates corresponding to the final in-game save.
  • Confirm that the archive opens without copy errors and that its total size is plausible compared with the source.
  • Do not rename, edit or encrypt the files unless the game’s own support instructions specifically require it.

Verification is a file check, not a full restore test. If you have a spare Windows installation or another supported PC, you can test a restore there later, but do not risk replacing a working save until the backup has been preserved separately.

8. Document what the archive contains

Place a text note beside the copied folder recording the game title, edition, platform or store version, Ubisoft account used, backup date, original path, and any relevant save-slot detail. This information prevents confusion if you later own multiple editions or accounts, and it helps you follow the correct game-specific restore instructions.

Backup methods compared

Method Independence from Ubisoft services Copy and restore effort Portability to another Windows PC Main risk
USB flash drive High while the drive is available; no Ubisoft service is needed to read the files Simple folder copy; restore requires placing files in the expected path Good for the same title and compatible PC edition Loss, damage or accidental overwrite of the single drive
Second physical drive High and independent of Ubisoft account availability Similar to USB, with an additional duplicate to maintain Good, provided the game and edition use the same save format Both copies can be lost if stored together
Cloud-storage account Not independent of the storage provider or your account access Easy to duplicate, but downloading and account access are required later Good as a second location, not as the sole archive Provider outage, account loss or synchronization replacing the desired version
Ubisoft Connect cloud saves Dependent on Ubisoft services and account access Convenient when available; no independent file archive unless you copy it Useful within supported Ubisoft installations Service decommissioning, account termination or a cloud/local conflict

The strongest practical arrangement is a verified USB or other physical copy plus a second copy stored elsewhere. The key distinction is independence: a local archive remains available even when Ubisoft synchronization is unavailable, while a cloud-only method remains tied to service and account access.

How to restore a backed-up save later

Ubisoft’s PC restore guidance treats a backup as a way to restore an earlier local save. Restore only after confirming that the game and edition match the archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the game and Ubisoft Connect completely.
  2. Keep cloud-save synchronization disabled so the launcher cannot overwrite the restored files during startup.
  3. Preserve the current save folder by renaming it as a dated safety copy or copying it to another location.
  4. Place the backed-up account/game folder in the original savegames path, following the title-specific Ubisoft instructions for the exact folder.
  5. Launch the game and check that the expected save slots, progress and settings appear.
  6. Only after confirming the intended progress should you re-enable cloud synchronization. If prompted to choose between local and cloud data, select the verified version deliberately.

If the game does not recognize the files, stop and restore the safety copy. Common causes include using the wrong Ubisoft account ID, selecting a different numeric game folder, mixing editions or platforms, restoring while synchronization is active, or assuming that a PC save is compatible with a console or another store edition.

What a PC backup cannot do

  • It is not a universal cross-platform conversion. A PC folder is not automatically usable on PlayStation, Xbox, Mac, Steam or another edition. Save formats and paths can differ by title.
  • It does not preserve online functions. Multiplayer services, leaderboards, online inventories, authentication and other server-dependent features may still disappear when a service is decommissioned.
  • It does not restore a terminated account. Ubisoft’s Terms of Use warn that account termination removes access to save files and in-game progression related to the services.
  • It does not guarantee future compatibility. A later patch, launcher change or edition difference can alter how a game reads saves.

Before transferring a file to another platform or store version, consult the game-specific Ubisoft support page. Preserve the untouched original archive even if you create a converted or test copy.

Historical shutdown example and how to interpret notices

Ubisoft’s 27 October 2023 notice listed Assassin’s Creed II on Xbox 360, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood on Mac, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Assassin’s Creed Revelations on PC, Ghost Recon Future Soldier on PC, Heroes of Might and Magic VI on PC, NCIS on PC, R.U.S.E. on PC, Splinter Cell: Conviction on Xbox 360, and Trials Evolution on PC for services decommissioned on 25 January 2024.

The notice said the decommissioning would affect only certain online functionalities and that purchased games would remain playable. That historical example illustrates why you must read the title and platform list: the same franchise can have different behavior across PC, console, Mac and individual editions. Do not use the 25 January 2024 date as a prediction for another game; check the current notice for your title.

Troubleshooting checklist

The save folder is missing

  • Confirm that you are looking under the Ubisoft account ID used to launch the game.
  • Check whether Ubisoft Connect was installed outside the default Program Files (x86) path.
  • Launch the game, create or update a test save, exit completely, and look again for a newly modified folder.
  • Consult the title-specific Ubisoft support page because some games use additional or different locations.

The copied files have old dates

Cloud synchronization may have restored an older version, or the game may not have completed its final save. Re-enable the game only after deciding which version is authoritative, then repeat the save, shutdown, copy and verification sequence with synchronization disabled.

The launcher reports a cloud conflict

Do not choose a sync option hurriedly. Keep both the local folder and your verified USB archive intact, leave synchronization disabled, and identify which copy contains the desired progress. After a successful local test, re-enable synchronization and select the verified version when Ubisoft Connect asks.

The restore works on one PC but not another

Compare the Ubisoft account, game edition, platform or store version, launcher installation path and game updates. A copied PC save is not guaranteed to work across editions. Restore the original files if the second PC behaves unexpectedly and seek the game-specific support procedure before trying a conversion.

Final pre-shutdown checklist

  • Final in-game save completed and the game fully exited.
  • Ubisoft Connect cloud synchronization disabled.
  • Correct account-ID and game-specific folder identified.
  • Complete folder copied, not moved, to a dated USB archive.
  • Original files left untouched.
  • Copied files and recent modified dates verified.
  • Second copy stored independently.
  • Title, edition, platform, account, date and original path documented.
  • Current Ubisoft shutdown notice checked for the exact game and platform.
