Make a fresh manual save, close the game normally, and wait until your platform confirms that the newest save has uploaded or backed up. Keep a second, dated copy whenever the platform allows it. Do not start the hard-mode attempt while a cloud warning, sync conflict, or stale timestamp remains.
Restoring is not a harmless “undo.” A Nintendo Switch cloud download replaces the console save, and a PS5 USB restore erases console data. Preserve any newer progress before restoring an older copy, and confirm whether the game stores its hard-mode unlock in the save, the player profile, or an online service.

What to do before you launch hard mode
The safest sequence is short but strict: create the save you want to preserve, make the platform finish writing it, verify the copy’s time, and only then change difficulty. A backup is useful only when it contains the pre-attempt state rather than an earlier checkpoint or a partially synchronized file.

- Reach a safe point. Finish the last checkpoint, then use the game’s manual-save command. If the game has several save slots, note the slot name or number.
- Exit through the game’s normal menu. Do not force-close the application, shut down the console during a write, or put a PC to sleep while the game is still saving.
- Wait for synchronization or backup to finish. Look for the platform’s completed-upload state, not merely an enabled cloud setting.
- Check the timestamp. It must be at or after the manual save you just made. If the time is older, make no difficulty change; repeat the save and synchronization process.
- Create a second copy when supported. A dated local copy is independent of a synchronization service and gives you another recovery route.
- Resolve every warning first. A Steam conflict, a console cloud error, or an interrupted backup means the state is uncertain. Choose deliberately between versions before opening the game again.
- Record what you are about to change. Write down the game, platform, user account, save slot, date, and the backup location. This prevents restoring the wrong profile later.
Do not assume that an unlockable difficulty is controlled solely by the save file. Some games keep progression in a profile or on a server, and no universal rule determines whether rolling back a save will remove, preserve, or duplicate a hard-mode unlock. Check the game’s own support documentation before relying on a rollback.

Backup methods compared
The methods below protect different things. Cloud services generally synchronize a supported save; they are not automatically an untouched second archive. A manually copied PC folder or a full console image is a separate artifact, but restoration can affect more data.

PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Upload a PS5 or PS4 save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage
PlayStation Plus cloud storage can upload and download saved data. On a PS5, use the system path below after closing the game or confirming that its manual save has completed:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS5) for a PS5 version, or Saved Data (PS4) for a PS4 version.
- Choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage, then Upload to Cloud Storage.
- Select the game and the save you just created, and wait for the upload to finish.
PS5 can enable automatic synchronization for PS5 games and automatic upload for PS4 games. Automatic settings are a convenience, not proof that the latest manual save is already online. Open the game’s sync status and confirm its time before starting hard mode.

Make a full PS5 USB backup
For a broader safety net, connect a compatible USB storage device and use Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5. The backup includes saved data along with the other console content covered by the system backup.
This is a console image, not a convenient way to export one PS5 game save. Sony’s transfer documentation states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive as an individual save-file workflow, while PS4 saves can be copied to USB: PlayStation’s PS4 and PS5 saved-data transfer guidance.

Do not turn off the PS5 while it is backing up or restoring. An interruption can cause loss or corruption. Before using a full restore, copy or synchronize any newer screenshots, games, settings, or saves you still need; restoring the image is not a merge operation.
PS4 USB saves and the version distinction
PS4 game saves can be copied to USB as individual saved-data files, which makes a dated pre-hard-mode copy practical when you have a suitable drive. Keep the console’s user account and the save-slot information with the copy. A PS5 save for the PS5 version of a game follows a different path and cannot be exported as an individual file by the same method.
Nintendo Switch
Back up a supported game
An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for Save Data Cloud. The game must also support the service; support is not universal.
- From the HOME Menu, highlight the game icon.
- Press + or –.
- Choose Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user profile that owns the save.
- Choose Back Up Save Data and wait for completion.
In the same screen, compare the local-save and cloud-save timestamps. The cloud time must be at or after the manual save you made immediately before attempting hard mode.
Use automatic backup carefully
Automatic backup can run after you close software or while the console sleeps when it is enabled. It can reduce routine work, but it does not remove the need to check the game’s support status and the displayed time before a risky experiment. If the game does not support Save Data Cloud, do not treat an active membership as a backup for that title.
Understand the replacement warning
Downloading a backup replaces the existing console save for that game. Nintendo states: “Save data downloaded from the backup will replace the existing save data on the console for that game.” Any progress made after the backup time is therefore at risk, and overwritten data cannot be recovered through that download command. If you need newer progress, preserve it by another supported method before downloading the older copy.

Steam on a Windows, macOS, or Linux PC
What Steam Cloud does—and does not—cover
Steam Cloud stores saves only when the game supports it, and the developer chooses which files are included. A game may omit configuration files, screenshots, or a particular profile even while its primary save synchronizes. Treat Steam Cloud as synchronization, not as an immutable archive.
Prepare the cloud copy
- Make the manual save and exit the game normally.
- Wait for Steam to finish syncing. Do not launch the game again while the status is pending.
- Open the game’s Steam library entry and confirm there is no cloud error or unresolved conflict.
- Note the local save location and copy the relevant Steam userdata folder to a separate, dated drive or folder.
Steam lists these common local cloud locations:
- Windows:

~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
The userdata directory can contain multiple accounts and games. Identify the folder associated with the correct account and title instead of replacing the entire directory indiscriminately. Preserve the original folder’s date and keep the copy disconnected from automatic synchronization until you are certain which version you want.
Handle a Steam conflict
A conflict means the cloud and local copies have different states. Compare their timestamps and, if available, the file details before choosing. Steam warns that ignoring the message and selecting “play game” can create a conflict between cloud and local files, resulting in lost data or progress. Do not click through the warning simply to reach the title screen.
If you choose the local pre-hard-mode state, keep the cloud copy untouched until you have made a separate archive. If you choose the cloud state, retain the local folder in case it contains the newer progress you actually wanted. After the correct version is selected, allow Steam to complete a fresh synchronization and verify the time again.
Xbox Series X|S
For Xbox Series X|S, the documented backup path is uploading save data to the Xbox service cloud. Because menu labels and game support vary, open the target game’s support information and wait for the console to finish syncing before changing difficulty.
Make the manual save, quit normally, leave the console online, and do not start the game on another Xbox or account until synchronization has completed. If the game reports a sync choice or an error, stop and determine which timestamp is the pre-hard-mode state. There is no universal per-game restore procedure exposed across all Xbox titles, so the game’s own support instructions control what can be recovered.

Verification checklist before starting
Use this checklist as a release gate. If any answer is “no” or “unknown,” postpone hard mode.
- The manual save was made after the last safe checkpoint.
- The game was closed through its normal exit command.
- The cloud or removable-media copy shows a timestamp at or after that save.
- The title supports the selected cloud service on this platform and edition.
- No Steam sync error, console cloud warning, or conflict dialog remains unresolved.
- The backup identifies the correct platform version, user profile, region or edition when those distinctions exist, and save slot.
- A second copy exists where the platform permits one, and it is stored separately from the live save.
- You know whether restoration replaces one game save or an entire console image.
- You have a plan for preserving newer progress before downloading or restoring the older state.
- You have checked the game’s documentation for how difficulty unlocks are stored.
Starting the hard-mode attempt safely
After verification, launch the game without changing the backup. Keep the pre-attempt copy dated and clearly named, such as a folder containing the game title, platform, user, save slot, and date. Do not overwrite that copy with a later automatic synchronization.
If the game offers separate save slots, use a new slot for the hard-mode experiment rather than replacing the slot you just archived. This is a game-level option, not a platform guarantee: some titles use one rolling file or a profile-wide progression record. When only one slot exists, rely on the verified external or cloud copy and avoid launching on a second device until the first session has synchronized deliberately.

First preserve the newer state
Before any restore command, exit the game and make a copy of the newer post-attempt state where the platform allows it. On Steam, copy the relevant local userdata folder again with a new date. On PS4, copy the newer individual save to USB if that workflow applies. On cloud-only console workflows, do not assume that downloading an older version leaves the newer one available.
Nintendo Switch restore
Open the game’s Save Data Cloud screen, select the user, and choose the download command only after checking the timestamps. The download replaces the console save for that game. A newer local save is overwritten, and Nintendo says overwritten data cannot be recovered. If preserving the newer state is impossible through a supported method, do not download until you accept that loss.

PS5 restore
A cloud saved-data download replaces the selected console save with the cloud version. A full USB restore is broader: it restores the PS5 backup image and erases console data in the process. Synchronize or otherwise preserve any newer data first, then use the restore path appropriate to the backup type. Never power off the console during the operation.

Steam restore
Temporarily prevent an unwanted cloud overwrite, preserve the current local folder, and replace only the game files you have identified as the pre-attempt save. The exact file set depends on the game’s implementation. Start the game only after the intended files are in place, then resolve Steam’s cloud prompt deliberately so the older local state is not silently replaced by the newer cloud state.
Xbox restore
Follow the game’s support procedure for its Xbox cloud save. Cloud synchronization may automatically select one state, and the available choices differ by title. If the game does not document a per-save rollback, assume that a download or resync can replace the current state and preserve any newer progress before proceeding.
Troubleshooting common failure modes
The timestamp is older than the manual save
Return to the game, make another manual save, exit normally, and wait again. Check that you are viewing the same user profile and game version. An old timestamp means the backup is not yet the state you intend to protect.
A cloud conflict appears
Do not launch the game. Compare local and cloud times, identify which one predates the hard-mode attempt, and keep both copies if possible. On Steam, ignoring the conflict can lead to lost progress; on consoles, follow the displayed choice only after you understand which side will replace the other.
The game is not eligible for cloud backup
Use a supported local or console-level method instead. Nintendo Save Data Cloud and Steam Cloud both have title-specific support limits, and PS5 does not provide an individual-save USB export workflow. If no independent method exists, make the safest available cloud copy and document its timestamp before proceeding.
The backup or restore was interrupted
Do not assume the result is usable. Sony warns that interrupting a PS5 backup or restore can cause loss or corruption. Reconnect the storage or network, restart the process from a stable system state, and verify the resulting timestamp or completion message before opening the game.
The unlock remains after restoring—or disappears unexpectedly
That behavior can be correct for the game’s design. The hard-mode flag may live in a profile, server account, or separate progression record rather than the save slot. Consult the title’s official support information; a save rollback alone cannot establish a universal result.
