Back up a PC game in two separate layers: preserve the installed game and any lawful installer files, then copy saves, settings, mods, and other user data independently. Steam’s Backup Game Files tool does not necessarily include everything a game needs, and Steam Cloud is synchronization rather than a complete archive. Store the copies on an external drive, make a second copy, and test a restore while the original installation still works.
This process protects your files, not every future launch. Steam login, third-party digital-rights management (DRM), activation servers, patches, or always-online services can still block a delisted game even when its files are preserved.

What to preserve before a game disappears
A durable backup has more than one folder. Treat each item as a separate preservation job because different parts may live in different locations and have different restore requirements.

| Mods, custom maps, screenshots, and user-created content | Content that may sit outside the normal installation or save folders | Compatible mod loaders, subscriptions, and dependencies |
| Installer or redistributable files | Lawfully downloaded setup packages and required runtime components | Operating-system compatibility and any activation service required by the software |
Valve states that Steam’s tool supports only “games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam.” A title that uses a separate launcher, external installer, unusual patcher, or files outside Steam’s managed set may need a manual copy as well.

Before you copy anything
Launch once and close normally
Start the game, load the newest save, make a small change if appropriate, save, and exit through the game’s normal menu. This gives the title a chance to flush pending data to disk. Do not assume that a save made during a crash or forced shutdown has been written completely.
Record the identity of the installation
Create a plain-text note beside the backup. Record the game title and edition, Steam AppID if known, game version, installation path, owning Steam account, other launchers involved, installed redistributables, mods, and whether an internet connection or activation is required. Include the backup date and the drive location. This information prevents a future restore from becoming a search through unnamed folders.
Keep the original until verification is finished
Do not uninstall or overwrite the working copy until you have checked the backup and, ideally, started the game from a separate library or another PC. A backup is only useful once the files can be read and the game can load a recent save.
Use Steam’s Backup Game Files tool
For a fully Steam-managed installation, the supported workflow is:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Choose a destination with enough free space and note the destination folder and date.
The resulting backup is designed for restoration through Steam. It is not a universal disk image and should not be treated as a guarantee that saves, custom content, screenshots, or configuration files are included. Valve specifically notes that saved games and custom content may require separate copying.
If the game is not fully downloaded, installed, and patched through Steam, the option may not be available or may not capture the external components. Use the tool where it applies, then follow the manual-copy steps below for everything else.
Make a manual copy of the game and installers
Copy the complete installation directory
Locate the game’s Steam library folder and copy the entire title directory to an external hard drive or portable SSD. Copying the whole directory preserves files that a selective copy can miss, including patch data, language packs, and local assets.

When copying a Steam library manually, also retain the relevant appmanifest_*.acf file from the library’s steamapps folder. The manifest records Steam’s knowledge of the installation, but it does not make the files independent of Steam. Steam may still need to validate, reacquire, or download components when you point it at the restored library.
Preserve lawful installer files
If you lawfully downloaded an installer, patch package, offline runtime, or a publisher-provided setup file, copy it to the same backup set. Keep the original filename and, if available, its version information. Do not obtain replacement installers from “backup” download sites or unauthorized mirrors. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that uploading or downloading copyrighted software without the copyright owner’s authority can infringe the owner’s reproduction and distribution rights.
Keep launch requirements with the files
Write down which launcher starts the game, whether a separate account is needed, and which runtime packages were installed. A copied executable can fail on a new PC because a required runtime, launcher, registry entry, or service is missing even though the game directory itself is intact.
Find and back up saves, settings, and custom content
Save paths are title-specific. A developer’s support page is the best authority for a particular game, especially when it uses a custom launcher or stores data in an unusual location. On Windows, inspect the following locations in addition to the Steam installation folder:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems%USERPROFILE%Documents, including a game-specific folder orDocumentsMy Games.%APPDATA%(the roaming application-data folder).%LOCALAPPDATA%and%LOCALAPPDATA%Low(local and low-integrity application data).%USERPROFILE%Saved Games.- The game’s installation directory, where some older titles keep saves or configuration.
ProgramDatafor certain legacy or machine-wide data stores.
Steamworks documentation identifies Documents, AppData Local/LocalLow/Roaming, and Saved Games as common Windows roots. The equivalent roots differ on macOS and Linux, so do not transplant a Windows path assumption to another operating system. Search the title’s official support documentation for the platform you use.
Copy more than the main save
Include configuration files, controller profiles, custom maps, screenshots, replay files, mod folders, and locally created content that you would want after reinstalling. Some games keep these beside the executable; others place them under Documents or AppData. If a mod manager has its own profile or download directory, preserve that separately and record the mod versions.
Separate cloud data from local data
Steam Cloud synchronizes files between devices; it is not a complete historical archive. Conflicts can occur when local and cloud versions differ, and Steam Support says its ability to recover lost saves is limited. Keep a dated local copy outside the Steam userdata tree so that a synchronization event cannot silently replace every copy.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Compare the preservation options
No single method preserves every component. Use these comparisons to decide what belongs in your backup set:
| Method | Preserves | Main dependency | Restore confidence | Legal and practical note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Backup Game Files | Compatible Steam-managed game files | Steam client, account license, and possible DRM | Highest when restored and tested through Steam | Publisher/store-provided files; saves and custom content may be separate |
| Manual library copy | Installed executables, assets, patches, and local files | Steam metadata, validation, runtimes, and launch services | Good only after a test restore | Keep the matching appmanifest, but do not expect it to defeat platform checks |
| Save and settings copy | Progress, preferences, profiles, and user-created data | Exact title version and platform path | Easy to verify by loading a recent save | Store outside Steam userdata and date each copy |
| Cloud synchronization | Files selected by the game’s Steam Cloud configuration | Steam account and synchronization service | Not an archive; conflicts and loss are possible | Use as convenience, not as your only preservation layer |
| External hard drive or portable SSD | Whatever folders and installers you copy | Drive readability and a compatible future system | High when a second copy and restore test exist | Keep another physical copy and disconnect it when not in use |
The useful comparison is not simply “which drive is fastest.” Ask what is preserved, which services must still operate, whether you have actually restored the files, how portable and redundant the storage is, and whether every file came from a lawful publisher or store source.
Use a two-copy storage plan
Put the Steam backup, manual game directory, saves, configuration, custom content, installers, and your notes on an external hard drive or portable SSD. Then create a second copy on another physical medium or in another location. Two copies on different devices protect against a single drive failure; keeping one copy disconnected when not in use also reduces the risk of accidental deletion or malware.
Organize the drive with a predictable structure, for example:
Game-Title-Edition-YYYY-MM-DD/steam-backup/
Game-Title-Edition-YYYY-MM-DD/installed-files/
Game-Title-Edition-YYYY-MM-DD/saves/
Game-Title-Edition-YYYY-MM-DD/settings-and-mods/
Game-Title-Edition-YYYY-MM-DD/installers-and-runtimes/
Game-Title-Edition-YYYY-MM-DD/README.txt
Use the README file to record the version, paths, account and launcher requirements, activation status, and the date each folder was copied. The external drive stores your files; it cannot bypass DRM or revive an authentication service that has been shut down.

- Backing up only the Steam directory: saves may be in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, or another title-specific folder.
- Trusting Steam Cloud as the archive: synchronization can propagate the wrong version, and recovery support is limited.
- Copying while the game is running: the newest save or configuration may still be unwritten.
- Deleting the original immediately: a copied folder can be incomplete or unreadable even when the copy operation reports success.
- Ignoring custom content: mods, maps, screenshots, replays, and controller profiles may sit outside Steam’s normal backup set.
- Forgetting the appmanifest: a manual library copy is easier for Steam to recognize when the matching manifest is retained, although validation may still be required.
- Assuming files remove DRM: account checks, activation servers, and online services can remain mandatory.
- Using unauthorized download sites: replacement installers may infringe copyright and may contain altered or unsafe files.
Verify that the backup is usable
Check the copy itself
- Compare the copied folder sizes with the originals.
- Compare file counts and spot-check large archives, executables, and recent save files.
- Open several files from the external drive to confirm the drive is readable.
- Keep the original installation untouched until all checks pass.
Restore to a separate test location
Steam recommends testing backup media. Use a separate Steam library or another PC while the original still launches. Restore the Steam backup through Steam’s restore flow, or point Steam at the manually copied library and let it discover and verify the files. Do not test by deleting the only working installation.
Test the complete player experience
- Start the restored game and wait for the title screen.
- Confirm that required launchers, runtimes, and account sign-ins behave as expected.
- Copy the saved-game folder into the exact title-specific path.
- Load the newest save and confirm progress, settings, and controller mappings.
- Check that mods or custom maps load if they are part of your intended setup.
- If Steam displays a cloud conflict, compare the timestamps and contents of the local and cloud versions before choosing. Do not assume the cloud copy is newest or complete.
Record the result in the README, including the test PC or library, date, game version, and any missing dependency. A failed test is useful information: it tells you what must be preserved or installed before the store listing disappears.

Restore a delisted game later
When you have a Steam backup
Sign in to the same Steam account, open Steam’s restore-backup function, select the backup location, and follow the prompts. Restoration works only for compatible Steam-managed content and still may require Steam validation, account ownership, a third-party launcher, or an activation service.
When you have a manual library copy
- Install Steam and create or select the library location that will contain the game.
- Place the copied game directory in the expected
steamappscommonlocation. - Restore the matching
appmanifest_*.acffile when available. - Start Steam and allow it to discover or verify the files rather than forcing an overwrite.
- Install any recorded redistributables or required launcher.
- Restore saves, settings, and custom content to their title-specific paths.
A delisted title may remain downloadable to people who already own it, but availability is platform- and title-dependent. Keep the original account and library metadata, and do not treat ownership as a promise of indefinite redownload access.

Handle cloud conflicts deliberately
If Steam asks whether to use local or cloud data, stop and compare the dates and file contents. Choose the copy that contains the progress you intend to keep, then make another local backup before launching. A mistaken choice can cause synchronization to propagate the wrong version to other devices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know what a file backup cannot guarantee
Preserved files do not necessarily create a permanently playable game. Future launch can depend on:
- Steam client access and a valid account license.
- Third-party DRM or a separate publisher launcher.
- Activation servers that may be retired or require periodic checks.
- Always-online services, matchmaking, leaderboards, or server-hosted game logic.
- Operating-system support, graphics drivers, or runtimes that change over time.
- Updates or patches that are no longer available.
Describe your result accurately: you have preserved a lawful copy of files and user data, and you have tested the restoration to the extent possible. You have not eliminated platform dependencies or guaranteed that online features will continue.
A practical preservation checklist
- Launch the game and exit normally after saving.
- Run Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Backup game files when the title is compatible.
- Copy the complete installed directory and any lawful installer or runtime files.
- Retain the relevant Steam appmanifest when making a manual library copy.
- Find saves through the game’s official support page, then check Documents, DocumentsMy Games, AppData, Saved Games, the install directory, and (for some older titles) ProgramData.
- Copy settings, mods, custom maps, screenshots, replays, and controller profiles that matter to you.
- Store everything on an external hard drive or portable SSD and make a second physical copy.
- Keep a README with version, date, account, launcher, dependencies, and activation requirements.
- Compare sizes and file counts, then restore to a separate library or test PC.
- Confirm that the game starts, the latest save loads, and cloud conflicts are resolved intentionally.
- Keep the original installation until verification is complete.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I back up a Steam game before it is delisted?
Use Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Backup game files when the title is fully downloaded, installed, and patched through Steam. Also copy the complete installation directory, the matching appmanifest file, saves, settings, custom content, and any lawful installer or runtime files. Test the result before uninstalling.
Does Steam Backup include saves?
Not necessarily. Valve notes that saved games and custom content may require separate copying. Find the title’s supported save path, copy it outside the Steam userdata tree, and keep a dated local version.

Where are PC game save files?
The location varies by title and platform. On Windows, check Documents, DocumentsMy Games, %APPDATA%, %LOCALAPPDATA%, %LOCALAPPDATA%Low, %USERPROFILE%Saved Games, the installation directory, and sometimes ProgramData. The developer’s support page is the best authority.
Can I reinstall a delisted game later?
Possibly, but it depends on the store and title. A delisted game may remain downloadable to existing owners, yet Steam access, account ownership, third-party DRM, activation servers, or missing patches can still prevent installation or launch. Keep both the files and the account metadata.
Is Steam Cloud enough to preserve my progress?
No. Steam Cloud synchronizes selected files rather than providing a complete historical archive. Conflicts can occur, and Steam Support has limited ability to recover lost saves. Maintain dated local copies on separate physical storage.

How can I tell whether my backup really works?
Compare folder sizes and file counts, open files from the backup drive, then restore to a separate Steam library or another PC while the original remains intact. Start the game, load the newest save, check settings and custom content, and resolve any cloud prompt deliberately.
Is downloading a replacement installer from a backup site legal?
Do not rely on unauthorized mirrors or download sites. The U.S. Copyright Office states that uploading or downloading copyrighted software without the copyright owner’s authority can infringe reproduction or distribution rights. Preserve files you obtained lawfully from the publisher or store.
Will a copied game work without Steam or internet access?
Not necessarily. The restored game may still require Steam login, a publisher launcher, third-party DRM, periodic activation, an online service, or operating-system components. A file backup preserves data but cannot revive a closed authentication service or remove DRM.

The Bottom Line
Preserve a delisted PC game in layers: make Steam’s compatible backup, copy the complete installation and lawful installers, save user data separately, and keep a dated second copy on another physical drive. Test the restore on a separate library or PC before deleting anything. That gives you the best chance of recovering the game and your progress while being honest about the DRM, account, activation, and online-service dependencies that no file backup can remove.
