Your game’s physical or digital format usually does not determine how its saves are backed up. Saves normally live in the console’s internal storage and, where supported, an account-linked cloud service. Use the platform’s official cloud feature for the most convenient protection, and add a local copy when the platform supports one. Always check which save is newest before restoring: some restore actions replace the console copy permanently.
What physical and digital games actually change
A cartridge, disc or download is the way the console receives the game software and verifies your licence. It is not normally the place where progress is stored. On Nintendo Switch, save data is stored in system memory whether you play from a game card or a download. On PlayStation, saves are kept in console storage or in PlayStation’s online storage, independent of whether the game was purchased on disc or downloaded.

That means the same backup questions apply to both formats: does the title support the platform’s cloud service, is the save tied to the correct user account, and can the platform create a local copy? Physical media can still matter when you move to another console because you need the disc or cartridge, or a valid digital licence, to launch the game. A save may also depend on the same game edition, region, generation or user profile.
Where saves live on each platform
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo states that save data is stored in the console’s system memory. It is associated with the individual user who created it, not with the game card. A microSD card can hold downloaded software and screenshots, but it cannot be used as a direct save-data backup. Nintendo’s official position is that “Local save data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.”

For compatible games, Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud provides the supported backup route. Compatibility is not universal, so check the game’s eShop listing, Nintendo Store product information or the software’s options menu before assuming a cloud copy exists.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
PlayStation saves are stored on the console and can be copied to PlayStation Plus online storage when the game and account support the relevant feature. PlayStation Plus publishes separate quotas of 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data, with room for up to 1,000 PS4 save files.
Generation matters. PS4 saved data can be copied to a USB drive and imported to a PS5. Individual PS5 game saves cannot be exported from the PS5 to USB. For those saves, use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or the PS5’s complete system-backup function.

Back up Nintendo Switch saves
1. Confirm that the game supports cloud backup
Open the game’s listing in the eShop or Nintendo Store, or inspect the game’s software menu on the console. Look for Save Data Cloud support. Some games omit the feature because of their online design or other title-specific rules. Do this check for every important game rather than assuming that one supported title means all titles are supported.

2. Use the account and membership that own the save
Sign in to the Nintendo Account used by the player profile containing the progress. Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for Save Data Cloud. If several people use the console, each user’s save is handled separately; backing up one profile does not back up another profile’s progress.
3. Start a manual backup from the HOME menu
- From HOME, highlight the game.
- Press the + or − button.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user whose save you want to protect.
- Select Back Up Save Data and wait for the completion message.
You can reach the same controls through System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud. Leave the console connected until the upload finishes; interrupting the process can leave you without a current cloud copy.
4. Configure automatic backups
For compatible software, automatic backup is enabled by default when Nintendo Switch Online membership begins. Settings can be changed for each game and user. Automatic download is a separate choice and must be enabled on each console where you want a cloud save to be downloaded automatically. If you use more than one Switch-family console, review this setting on every device instead of assuming a change propagated everywhere.

Before selecting a cloud download, compare the cloud backup date and the local save’s progress. Nintendo warns that downloading a backup replaces the existing console save for that game, and the overwritten data cannot be recovered. If the local file contains newer progress, do not download the older cloud copy. When you are unsure, stop and determine which console and user last played the game.

What happens if membership expires
Nintendo’s current Switch Online FAQ says that resubscribing can restore access to Nintendo cloud backups within 180 days. Treat that as a service rule, not a substitute for an active backup routine: while membership is inactive, you cannot rely on cloud access for an urgent restore, and a title’s compatibility still applies.
Back up PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 saves to the cloud
Enable cloud protection in the saved-data settings
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose the saved-data controls for PS5 or PS4, depending on the game you are protecting.
- For PS5 games, enable automatic synchronization when the console presents the option.
- For PS4 saves, enable automatic upload and verify that the upload has completed before shutting down after an important session.
Automatic synchronization and upload are account services, so confirm that the console is signed in to the PlayStation Network account that owns the progress. A different local user can have a completely separate save even when both users play the same disc or download.
Upload or download manually when timing matters
Use the same saved-data area to select a game and start an upload or download manually. Manual control is useful before replacing a console, changing a drive, joining a beta or attempting a risky in-game transfer. Check the timestamp after the upload. When restoring, download only after comparing the cloud copy with the console copy; selecting the wrong direction can replace the version you meant to keep.

PlayStation’s current support documentation lists 100 GB of cloud storage for PS5 saved data and another 100 GB for PS4 saved data. PS4 online storage supports up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are service limits, not a guarantee that every game uses the same file structure or that a save from one generation will load in another.

Make a local PlayStation backup
Copy PS4 saves to a USB drive
- Connect a USB storage device to the PS4.
- Open the saved-data management area in Settings.
- Choose the option to copy saved data to a USB storage device.
- Select the user and the PS4 games to copy, then confirm.
- Safely remove the USB device only after the copy has completed.
The resulting PS4 save files can be imported to a PS5 through its saved-data controls. This is an individual-save method, so select every user and game whose progress you need; copying one profile does not include another profile automatically.
Use the PS5 system-backup workflow for PS5 data
Sony does not support copying individual PS5 game saves from the console to a USB drive. Instead, use the PS5’s full system-backup and restore settings with a USB storage device. This protects data at the console level rather than creating a conveniently movable file for one game. Follow the on-screen backup-and-restore workflow and allow it to finish before disconnecting the drive.
Do not confuse a USB device used for PS5 extended game storage with one used for system backup. The console formats and manages these functions differently, and a device configured as extended game storage cannot simply be treated as a system-backup disk. If you need both functions, plan separate storage or reformat only after confirming that you have copied anything you still need.
Streaming and downloading can use different save stores
PlayStation Plus game streaming does not necessarily use the same save path as a downloaded installation. PlayStation says that streamed PlayStation Plus games keep their saves with PlayStation, while downloaded games keep saves on console storage and use cloud-storage copying for transfer.

When a title has been streamed, follow the separate streamed-game save-copy controls shown by the service. For a downloaded game, use the PS4 or PS5 saved-data upload and download controls. If you switch between streaming and downloading, verify the save location and timestamp before launching the game, because the newest progress may not be in the store you expect.
Moving a save to another console
Keep the user account consistent
Cloud saves are linked to the platform account and usually to the user profile that created them. Sign in with that same account on the destination console. A cartridge, disc or digital licence alone does not grant access to another person’s profile save.
Match the game and generation
A PS4 save may be transferable to PS5 through Sony’s supported import methods, but a PS5 save cannot be assumed to work on PS4. Games with separate PS4 and PS5 versions may have their own conversion or transfer rules. Region, edition, downloadable content and game updates can also affect whether a destination system recognizes a save.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not erase the source too soon
Keep the original console, USB copy or cloud version until the destination game has launched and loaded the expected progress. Check multiple save slots, inventory and recent milestones rather than relying only on a file name. Once you confirm the transfer, make a fresh backup from the destination console.
How to avoid the most common backup failures
- Assuming every Switch game supports cloud backup: verify Save Data Cloud support in the eShop, product information or software menu first.
- Looking for Switch saves on a microSD card: Switch save data is in system memory and cannot be copied to microSD as a local backup.
- Restoring without checking dates: Nintendo’s download action overwrites the console save and the replaced data cannot be recovered.
- Expecting a PS5 save on a USB stick: individual PS5 saves require PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a full PS5 system backup.
- Using the wrong PlayStation user: a cloud account can be correct while the selected local profile is wrong. Check the user before uploading or downloading.
- Confusing extended storage with backup storage: PS5 extended game storage and system-backup media are separate uses with different formatting requirements.
- Assuming automatic backup means immediate backup: wait for synchronization or upload to complete after a major milestone, then check the recorded time.
- Deleting the source before testing: launch the game on the new console and verify the actual progress before wiping the old copy.
A reliable routine for important saves
- After finishing a significant session, close or suspend the game according to the platform’s normal save process.
- Confirm that the cloud upload or synchronization timestamp has advanced.
- For PS4, periodically copy critical saves to a USB device as a second, local layer.
- For PS5, schedule complete system backups when you are preparing for a console replacement or storage change.
- Before restoring anything, write down which console has the newest progress and compare timestamps on both copies.
- After a transfer, open the game, load the save and verify recent progress before deleting the original.
Which approach should you use?
Use Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup for supported Switch and Switch 2 games because Nintendo does not provide a local microSD save-copy method. Enable automatic backup but make a manual backup before a console move or an important system change.
On PS4, combine PlayStation Plus automatic upload with occasional USB copies for saves that would be difficult to recreate. On PS5, rely on PlayStation Plus for individual game saves and use the system-backup workflow when you need a broader local recovery point. In every case, the safest restore is the one made after identifying the newest copy, the correct user and the exact game version.
