A USB backup is the broadest recovery copy, but it is not the same as copying one save file. PS5 saved data cannot be copied individually to USB. If PlayStation Plus is available, enable cloud synchronization as a second, separate copy and synchronize trophies before making any reset or restoration.

Sony documents backup and recovery but does not publish a PS5 homebrew installation or compatibility procedure. The steps below preserve recoverable data before an independently planned modification; they do not indicate that Sony supports or guarantees homebrew software.
What a PS5 backup protects
The built-in backup creates a console-level backup rather than a folder that you can selectively browse and restore. During the backup process, the PS5 lets you choose four categories:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Games and apps: installed game and application data selected for the backup.
- Saved data: local PS5 and PS4 saves stored on the console.
- Screenshots and video clips: captured media saved on the PS5.
- Settings: console configuration included by the backup tool.
Selecting all applicable categories gives you the widest recovery option before a system modification. You still need to synchronize trophies separately; Sony treats trophy synchronization as a distinct preparation step rather than part of the backup selection.
The backup protects the console’s current state, but a restoration is destructive: the PS5 erases data currently on the console before applying the backup. Treat the USB set as a recovery snapshot, not as a reversible “undo” button.
USB backup versus PlayStation Plus cloud storage
USB and cloud storage solve different problems. The USB process covers broad console data and can be performed without an internet connection. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is primarily a second location for saved data and depends on the account and internet synchronization.

| Consideration | USB PS5 backup | PlayStation Plus cloud storage |
|---|---|---|
| Data scope | Can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings selected in the backup screen. | Saved data synchronization; it is not a replacement for the full-console backup categories. |
| Connection requirement | USB drive connected directly to the PS5; the backup itself does not require an internet connection. | Internet access is required for synchronization. Automatic PS5 synchronization works when the console is online in rest mode and automatic sync is enabled. |
| Individual PS5 saves | PS5 saves cannot be copied one at a time to USB. | Provides the practical individual-save route when PlayStation Plus is available. |
| Restore risk | Restoring erases the data currently stored on the PS5. | Cloud synchronization gives you another copy, but downloading or syncing a save can still replace the local version for that game. |
| Account dependence | Backups are linked to the PlayStation account. A console that was never signed in has more limited restoration options. | Cloud saves are tied to the PlayStation account and PlayStation Plus access. |
| Published capacity | Capacity is limited by the free space on the compatible USB drive and the size of the selected backup. | Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current support documentation lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data. |
| Independent reuse | The drive can be stored as a separate recovery copy after it is safely disconnected. | The copy remains an online account service rather than a standalone physical archive. |
Using both methods is safer than choosing only one: the USB backup covers more types of data, while cloud synchronization gives individual saves a separate recovery path if the physical drive is lost or damaged.
Choose the correct USB drive and format
Use FAT32 or exFAT
Sony’s PS5 backup function supports USB storage formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Choose a drive that the operating system can format to one of those file systems and that has enough free space for every category you intend to include.

Back up any existing files on the drive before formatting it. Formatting normally removes the drive’s existing contents, and a drive that is already full cannot hold the PS5 backup. If the computer used to prepare the drive offers both formats, either FAT32 or exFAT is appropriate for the backup function; the important requirement is that the PS5 recognizes the resulting file system.
Do not confuse backup media with extended storage
PS5 extended USB storage for installed games is formatted for a different purpose. A drive configured as extended storage cannot also serve as the PS5 backup medium in that same configuration. Do not assume that a large game-storage drive is ready for backup simply because it plugs into the console.

| Drive use | What it is for | File-system or size detail |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 backup | Games and apps, saved data, captures, and settings selected in the backup tool. | FAT32 or exFAT; free space must cover the selected backup. |
| PS5 extended storage | Storing and running compatible installed games and apps. | Uses a different format. Sony’s published extended-storage guidance is 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum for game-storage use; that range does not define the requirements for a backup drive. |
For a purchase, the useful search description is “FAT32 exFAT USB flash drive for PS5 backup.” Confirm the drive can be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and size it for the categories you plan to select rather than relying on the capacity printed on the package.
Step-by-step: create the full PS5 backup
- Prepare the drive. Format the USB storage as FAT32 or exFAT and make sure it has enough free space. Remove it from any extended-storage configuration before using it for backup.
- Connect it directly to the PS5. Avoid routing the drive through a hub or adapter while creating the backup. The console needs to identify the storage as the connected backup destination.
- Open the backup utility. On the PS5, go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select the categories. Choose games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings as needed. For the most complete pre-modification snapshot, include every category the console offers and that you have room to store.
- Start the operation. Select Back Up. The PS5 restarts and performs the backup; do not disconnect the drive or interrupt power while this is happening.
- Wait for confirmation. Continue until the console displays Backup complete and completes the subsequent restart. A restart by itself is not confirmation that the backup finished successfully.
- Record what you made. Write down the backup date, the categories selected, and the PS5 on which it was created. This record helps you identify the correct snapshot if you keep more than one.
- Disconnect and protect the drive. After the console has finished, safely disconnect the drive and store it somewhere protected from accidental formatting, impact, moisture, and unauthorized use. Do not leave it attached while carrying out the modification.
The backup is a point-in-time copy. Any screenshots, settings, saves, or installed content created after it will not be present in that snapshot, so make the final backup after your last normal play session and configuration change.
Synchronize cloud saves as a second copy
If you have PlayStation Plus, use its cloud-save controls in addition to the USB backup. Sony documents automatic PS5 save synchronization when the console is connected to the internet in rest mode and automatic synchronization is enabled. Check that synchronization has completed before changing the system.

Sony’s current support documentation lists separate allowances of 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data. Those capacities apply to the cloud service, not to the physical USB backup and not to installed games.
PS5 saves cannot be copied individually from the console to a USB drive. For PS5 games, use the PS5 cloud-save synchronization controls to upload or synchronize the saves you need. PS4 saved data has a different rule: Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 transfer guidance allows PS4 saves to be copied to USB, and PS4 saves can also be manually uploaded or downloaded through cloud storage.
Cloud synchronization is account-based. Make sure the console is signed in to the PlayStation account that owns the relevant PlayStation Plus entitlement and that each important game has finished synchronizing. A cloud copy should supplement the physical backup, not replace it, because it does not preserve the full set of console categories.
Synchronize trophies separately
Trophies are not one of the selectable categories in the PS5 backup screen. Before any reset, restore, or modification, synchronize trophies through the console’s trophy feature while signed in to PlayStation services. Sony’s transfer checklist treats this as a separate action, so do not assume that a completed USB backup includes unsynchronized trophy progress.

- Synchronize trophies while signed in.
- Confirm PlayStation Plus cloud synchronization has completed, if you use it.
- Run Back Up Your PS5 and select the categories you want preserved.
- Wait for the Backup complete message and the following restart.
- Record the date and contents, then disconnect the drive.
- Store the drive separately from the console and keep it available for recovery.
This sequence gives you two different recovery paths for saves and one broad physical snapshot. It also leaves the original backup untouched if a later experiment changes or corrupts data on the console.

Restoration erases current console data
Sony states: “When restoring data, your PS5 console will erase all data saved on your console.” Any saves, captures, settings, games, or applications created after the backup and still on the PS5 can be removed by the restoration. Before selecting the restore command, copy or synchronize anything newer than the backup that you may want to keep.
The system-software version must be compatible
Sony’s PS5 backup guide states: “When you restore your PS5 console from a backup, the current system software version must be the same version or newer than the version on the PS5 console when the backup was made.” A console running an older system-software version than the one recorded with the backup cannot use that backup under this requirement. Check the version relationship before attempting recovery rather than treating a failed restore as evidence that the drive is empty.
Account and console limits apply
Backups are linked to the PlayStation account. If the original console was never signed in to PlayStation services, Sony limits restoration to that same console. Restoring to another PS5 requires the same PlayStation account associated with the backup. Keep the account credentials available and do not assume that a drive alone makes the data transferable to any console.

Console Sharing and Offline Play must be enabled again
Restoring a backup disables Console Sharing and Offline Play. If you use that feature, re-enable it after the restoration and after confirming that your games and saves are present. This setting change is an expected consequence of recovery, not an indication that the backup failed.

Recovery checklist after a modification
If you decide to return to the pre-modification state, use the restore function in the PS5’s Back Up and Restore area and select the backup created before the change. Before confirming, check three things:
- The PS5 system-software version meets Sony’s same-or-newer requirement.
- You have copied or synchronized any newer data that must survive, because restoration clears current console data.
- You are signed in with the account associated with the backup, especially if restoring to a different PS5.
After restoration completes, allow the console to restart fully, check the saved-data and settings categories you selected, and re-enable Console Sharing and Offline Play if required. Reconnect cloud synchronization only after you have decided which local and cloud versions should be retained; blindly syncing at the wrong time can replace the version you meant to preserve.
Troubleshooting common backup problems
The PS5 does not recognize the drive
Confirm that the drive is connected directly, is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and is not still configured as PS5 extended storage. Try preparing the drive again on a computer after copying off any files you need. Sony cautions that not every USB device works with every PS5, so a correct file system alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is not enough space
Reduce the selected categories only if you have deliberately decided what can be recreated later; otherwise use a drive with more free space. Installed games and apps can consume substantial capacity, while saved data and settings are usually more important to preserve before a system modification. Remember that the extended-storage capacity range published for game use does not tell you how large your backup will be.
A restore is refused because of the system version
Compare the PS5’s current system-software version with the version present when the backup was made. The current console must be on the same version or a newer one. If you have a newer backup, do not downgrade the console in an attempt to make the restore fit this rule.
A restore is being attempted on another console
Sign in with the PlayStation account associated with the backup. If the source console had never signed in to PlayStation services, Sony’s limitation means the backup can be restored only to that same console; a different PS5 is not an equivalent destination.
A save is missing from the USB workflow
Check whether it is a PS5 save that you expected to copy separately. Sony does not allow individual PS5 saves to be copied from the console to USB. Use the full-console backup or PlayStation Plus synchronization instead. Individual PS4 saves follow different rules and can be copied to USB or managed through cloud storage.
Quick Recap
Which backup plan should you use?
| Your situation | Recommended preparation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want the broadest rollback and have a compatible drive. | Create the full USB backup with every required category, synchronize trophies, and add cloud synchronization if available. | The USB snapshot covers more than saved data, while cloud storage supplies a separate copy. |
| You mainly need to protect a few PS5 saves and have PlayStation Plus. | Synchronize those saves to the cloud, then create a USB backup if you can. | PS5 saves cannot be copied individually to USB, so cloud storage is the individual-save route. |
| You have only a drive currently used as extended storage. | Move or preserve anything on it, reformat it as FAT32 or exFAT for backup, or use a different drive. | Extended storage and PS5 backup use different formats and roles. |
| You may need to restore to another PS5. | Ensure the backup is associated with a PlayStation account and keep that account available on the destination console. | Account linkage affects whether restoration to another console is allowed. |
| You cannot sign in to PlayStation services. | Rely on the same-console USB recovery path and do not assume the backup can be moved elsewhere. | Sony limits restoration of a never-signed-in console backup to that same console. |
Final pre-homebrew checklist
- USB drive is FAT32 or exFAT and has enough free space.
- Drive is not configured as PS5 extended storage.
- Backup was started from Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Saved data, settings, captures, and games or apps were selected intentionally.
- Backup complete appeared and the console finished restarting.
- Trophies were synchronized separately.
- PlayStation Plus cloud synchronization completed, if available.
- Backup date and contents were recorded.
- Drive was disconnected and stored safely.
- You understand that restoring erases current console data, requires a compatible system-software version, and can disable Console Sharing and Offline Play.
