1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBack up your PS5 before choosing Reset Your Console. A reset deletes all user data and returns the system to its original state; anything erased cannot be restored unless you copied it first. You can protect saves with PlayStation Plus cloud storage or make a broader backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. Trophies require a separate sync because they are not included in a USB backup.
Understand what a PS5 reset erases
Sony defines Reset PS5 as an operation that “deletes all user data and restores the PS5 console to its original state.” That includes locally stored PS5 and PS4 save files, installed games and applications, screenshots, video clips, accounts, settings and other user information. The deletion cannot be undone from the console, so create and verify a backup before opening the reset command.

A reset is different from Restore Default Settings in Safe Mode. Restore Default Settings returns system settings to their factory values but does not delete games, applications, captures or saved data on console storage. Use that less-destructive option when you are troubleshooting settings and do not intend to wipe the machine.

| Characteristic | USB backup | PlayStation Plus cloud storage |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | No PlayStation Plus subscription is required. | Requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. |
| What it protects | A full console backup can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips and settings. | Designed for saved data: up to 100 GB of PS5 saves and 100 GB of PS4 saves. |
| Storage requirement | A separate USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. | Available cloud capacity in your PlayStation Plus account. |
| Internet requirement | Not needed for the backup itself. | Internet access is needed to upload and download saves. |
| Portability | The backup travels with the USB drive and can be restored to a PS5. | Available after signing in to the same PlayStation Network account. |
| Main mistake to avoid | Do not select the USB extended-storage drive used for installed games; its format cannot store PS5 backup data. | Do not assume a save is protected until its upload or synchronization status has completed. |
If your immediate concern is losing saves, cloud storage is convenient when your subscription and internet connection are working. A USB backup is more comprehensive and does not depend on an online account, and it is the better choice when you also need settings, captures or a local recovery copy. You can use both methods for additional protection.

Prepare before backing up
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that owns the saves. Cloud saves belong to that account.
- Finish or pause downloads and close running games. A save made while a game is still writing data may not represent your latest progress.
- For USB backup, use a drive that the PS5 can format as FAT32 or exFAT. Back up files already on the drive elsewhere before formatting it.
- Disconnect other removable drives if you want to eliminate the chance of selecting the wrong device.
- Connect the console to reliable power. Never shut down the PS5 or remove the USB drive during a backup or restore.
- Synchronize trophies separately. Trophies are tied to your PlayStation Network profile but are not included in USB backup data.
Make a complete USB backup
1. Use a compatible USB drive
The backup drive must use FAT32 or exFAT. A USB extended-storage drive that holds installed PS4 or PS5 games is a different type of storage and cannot be used for PS5 backup data. If the console reports that the drive is unavailable, check its format on a computer and copy any important files off it before reformatting. Formatting erases the drive.
2. Open the backup utility
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose Back Up and Restore.
- Select Back Up Your PS5.
3. Select the drive and categories
If more than one compatible USB drive is connected, select the drive you intend to use. Choose the data categories to include, then select Next and Back Up. The categories Sony lists are games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. A full selection creates a broader recovery copy; selecting only saved data produces a smaller backup when space is limited.
4. Let the process finish
The PS5 restarts and begins copying data. Wait for the on-screen Backup complete message, select OK, and allow the console to restart again. Do not turn off the console, unplug it or remove the USB drive while the operation is running. An interruption can cause data loss or corruption and may damage the console or the drive.

5. Sync trophies separately
Open the Trophies screen while connected to PlayStation Network and allow synchronization to finish. Sony does not include trophies in USB backup data, so a completed console backup alone is not proof that your trophy history has been synchronized.

Know what the USB backup does and does not contain
A USB backup can include:
- PS5 and PS4 saved data stored on the console.
- Installed games and applications selected in the backup categories.
- Screenshots and video clips.
- System settings.
Games and applications installed on USB extended storage or on an M.2 SSD are not included in the console backup. Reconnect the extended-storage drive or reinstall the M.2 SSD after the reset. You may also need to reinstall software that was not part of the selected backup categories. A backup does not remove the need to sign in again or reauthorize content protected by an account.
Back up saves with PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Turn on automatic synchronization
Cloud synchronization can upload saved data automatically when a game closes or when the PS5 enters rest mode. Two settings must be enabled: automatic updates and Stay Connected to the Internet during rest mode.
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) for PS5 games or Saved Data (PS4) for PS4 games.
- For PS5 games, select Sync Saved Data and enable Auto-Sync Saved Data.
- For PS4 games, enable Auto-Upload.
After enabling these options, close each game normally and leave the console online long enough for synchronization to complete. A PS4 save and a PS5 save are handled under their respective categories, so check both if you play both versions of a title.

Upload saves manually before the reset
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
- Choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Select Upload to Cloud Storage.
- Select the games and saves to upload, then confirm and wait for completion.
PlayStation Plus cloud storage allows up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data. That capacity applies to the respective save categories, not to screenshots, video clips, settings or installed games. Cloud storage therefore protects progress but is not a replacement for a full USB console backup.

Verify the backup before erasing anything
Do not proceed to the reset screen merely because a backup command started. Confirm that the USB utility displayed Backup complete, or verify that the relevant cloud saves show a completed upload or synchronization status.
- For USB: keep the drive connected until the final restart has finished, then safely leave it labeled and stored where it will not be overwritten.
- For cloud: check both the PS5 and PS4 save sections if you use both generations of games, and make sure the latest play session has uploaded.
- For trophies: open the trophy list while online and wait for synchronization to finish independently of either backup method.
- If a backup reports insufficient space, remove unneeded captures from the selected backup or use a larger compatible drive; do not cancel halfway through and assume a partial copy is usable.
Reset the PS5 only after verification
For the normal wipe used before selling, giving away or starting over, open:
Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Reset Your Console
Read the confirmation screens carefully. This operation deletes the console’s settings and information and cannot be undone. Leave the console powered until the reset completes. If you selected Restore Default Settings instead, you have not performed the full data erasure; that option preserves content on console storage and is intended for settings troubleshooting.

Restore a USB backup after the reset
- Connect the USB drive containing the backup to the PS5.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.
- Select Restore Your PS5.
- Choose the backup you want to restore and confirm the operation.
- Keep the console and drive powered and connected until restoration and the required restart finish.
The PS5’s current system software must be the same version as, or newer than, the version installed when the backup was created. Update the console before attempting a restore if the utility reports a version mismatch. Restoring disables Console Sharing and Offline Play; re-enable that setting afterward if you rely on it for subscriptions or access to shared digital content.
Games and apps that were on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are handled separately. Reconnect the same storage device or reinstall the M.2 SSD after the system restore, then allow the console to rebuild its library and download any software that is still missing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Download cloud saves after the reset
- Sign in to the same PlayStation Network account used for the upload.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
- Select Download or Delete from Cloud Storage.
- Choose Download to Console Storage, select the games and saves, and confirm.
PS4 saves uploaded to cloud storage must be downloaded manually to PS5 console storage; they do not become local saves simply because you signed in. After downloading, start the relevant game and confirm that the expected progress appears before deleting any remaining cloud copy.
Fix common backup and reset problems
The PS5 does not offer the USB drive
Check that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT and connected directly to the console. Remove other USB drives and try again. If it is an extended-storage drive used for installed games, it is the wrong storage type for backup; copy its contents elsewhere and reformat only if you no longer need its game installation data.

The backup stops or reports an error
Keep the console powered, disconnect unnecessary USB devices, and retry with a healthy drive that has enough free space. A failed or interrupted operation should not be treated as a valid backup. Wait for the explicit completion message before resetting.
A recent save is missing from the cloud
Return to the game, save normally, close it, and keep the PS5 connected to the internet. Confirm that automatic synchronization or manual upload completes under the correct PS5 or PS4 save category. If the account has reached its cloud allowance, remove obsolete cloud saves only after preserving any local or USB copy you still need.
The restore option rejects the backup
Update the PS5 so its system software is at least as new as the version used to create the backup. Confirm that the selected USB drive contains the backup and has not been reformatted or altered. If the backup came from another console or account, sign in to the account associated with the saved data and follow the on-screen compatibility requirements.

Games or captures are missing after restoration
Check which categories were selected when the USB backup was made. Reconnect any USB extended-storage drive and reinstall the M.2 SSD that held games or applications, because those locations are excluded from the console backup. Captures and settings are also absent when they were not selected during backup.
Quick Recap
A safe sequence for the whole job
- Decide whether you need save-only protection or a full console copy.
- For USB, prepare a FAT32 or exFAT backup drive; for cloud, confirm PlayStation Plus and internet access.
- Close games and create the backup using the exact Settings path for your chosen method.
- Synchronize trophies separately.
- Verify the USB completion message or cloud upload status.
- Reset through Reset Options > Reset Your Console, not Restore Default Settings, when a complete wipe is intended.
- Restore from USB or download cloud saves after setup, then reconnect extended storage and re-enable Console Sharing and Offline Play if required.
