Close the game, synchronize its latest save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, and—if you want a second, local copy—make a full PS5 backup to a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Use Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5 for the USB backup. A normal system update is separate from Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software); the reset option deletes user data.
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is the most targeted way to protect saves. A USB backup also includes broader console data, but restoring it erases the data currently on the console. The safest preparation is therefore cloud synchronization plus a USB backup when you need an offline recovery copy.

Will a normal PS5 system update delete your saves?
Sony distinguishes an ordinary system software update from Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). The normal update is reached through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. The destructive reset is a separate option and deletes all user data, so do not select it when you only intend to install a routine update.

An update can be interrupted by a power or storage problem, and a backup gives you a recovery path if something goes wrong. Sony’s published guidance reviewed for this guide does not include a named independent statistic measuring save loss during routine PS5 updates. The practical protection is to have a current cloud copy, with a USB backup as a second layer.

Choose the right backup method
| Method | What it protects | Requirements | Recovery behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Saved data for PS5 and PS4 games | PlayStation Plus and an internet connection | Download a selected save to console storage; it is more targeted than a full restore |
| USB full-console backup | Games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings | A USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT | Restoring erases data currently saved on the console |
Use cloud synchronization when you mainly need protection for game saves and want automatic updates. Use the USB method when you want an offline copy or need to preserve a wider set of console data. A USB backup is not an alternative way to copy an individual PS5 save file; Sony’s PS4-style USB save-transfer workflow does not support individual PS5 saves.
Prepare the console before backing up
Close the game and allow the final save to finish
Exit the game before starting either backup method. Closing it prevents you from backing up while a final checkpoint or settings change is still being written. If the game has an in-game save command, use it first, wait for the game to finish saving, and then return to the PS5 home screen.
Keep the console online for automatic synchronization
For automatic cloud synchronization in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Stay Connected to the Internet and enable the option. The console must be connected to the internet, and your account must have the applicable PlayStation Plus access for cloud storage.

Check which save type you are protecting
PS5 games and PS4 games use separate saved-data controls. In Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, choose Saved Data (PS5) for native PS5 games or Saved Data (PS4) for PS4 games running on the console. Selecting the wrong category can make a save appear to be missing even though it is stored under the other game-generation menu.
Back up PS5 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Enable automatic cloud synchronization for PS5 games
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS5).
- Open Sync Saved Data.
- Enable Auto-Sync Saved Data.
With the console online, automatic synchronization can run while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, provided Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled. Leave the console connected long enough for the synchronization to complete before beginning the system update.

Enable automatic uploads for PS4 games
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS4).
- Choose Auto-Upload and enable the feature.
PS4 saves use the Auto-Upload control rather than the PS5 game menu’s Auto-Sync Saved Data label. This difference matters if the title you are protecting is a PS4 game installed on your PS5.
Run a manual cloud operation before the update
Automatic synchronization is convenient, but a manual check is useful immediately before maintenance. The PS5 provides Upload or Delete from Console Storage for sending local saves to the cloud and Download or Delete from Cloud Storage for bringing a cloud copy back to the console. Open the appropriate PS5 or PS4 saved-data category, select the upload control, and confirm the game’s current local save is the one being uploaded. Do not delete a local or cloud save while trying to synchronize it.

Sony’s current PlayStation Plus support guidance reports storage of up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data, with up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Those are service limits, not a guarantee that every account has unused capacity. If your account is near a limit, remove only obsolete copies after confirming that the remaining cloud save is current.
Make a full PS5 backup to a USB drive
Use a backup-compatible format
Sony supports USB drives formatted as FAT32 or exFAT for PS5 backup data. A drive configured as USB extended storage for installed games uses a different format and cannot be used for this backup. Do not assume that a drive holding PS5 games can also hold a console backup; the two uses are not interchangeable.
Use a separate FAT32- or exFAT-compatible USB flash drive or other USB storage device for the backup. If you reformat a drive to meet the requirement, copy anything you need from it first because formatting changes the drive’s existing contents.

Start the backup
- Connect the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive directly to the PS5.
- From the home screen, open Settings.
- Go to System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.
- Select Back Up Your PS5.
- Select the data categories you want included.
- Choose Next, review the selection, and select Back Up.
- Allow the console to restart and remain on until it reports Backup complete.
The backup can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. The category-selection screen lets you limit the copy to what you actually need, but a full selection provides the broadest recovery option.
Do not interrupt the process
Sony’s backup documentation warns: “Don’t turn off your PS5® console while backing up or restoring data.” Keep the USB drive connected and leave the console powered until the completion message appears. Disconnecting the drive or shutting down during the operation can leave the backup incomplete.
What a USB backup does not include
Trophies require a separate synchronization
Trophies are not included in the full-console USB backup. Synchronize trophies separately before updating if your recent achievements matter. Treat trophy synchronization and saved-data backup as two different tasks: completing one does not complete the other.
Individual PS5 saves cannot be copied like PS4 saves
Sony’s transfer guidance provides a USB route for PS4 game saves. It does not provide the same individual-file USB workflow for PS5 saves. For a PS5 title, use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or the full-console Back Up Your PS5 function. A USB drive that is recognized as extended storage for games will not bypass this limitation.
Install the system software update safely
Use the normal update menu
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Select System Software Update and Settings.
- Choose the available update and follow the on-screen instructions.
Safe Mode also offers Update System Software, but it is still an update operation, not a request to erase the console. If you install through a USB-based procedure, use only the official update file and follow Sony’s required file and folder instructions. Do not substitute a backup drive’s contents for an update file.

Do not choose the reinstall option by mistake
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is not the routine update path. Sony identifies it as a destructive operation that deletes all user data. If the menu presents reset or reinstall choices when your goal is simply to apply an update, stop and return to System Software Update and Settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Restore after an update or on another PS5
Cloud restore is selective
To retrieve a cloud copy, use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), and open Download or Delete from Cloud Storage. Download the save for the relevant game rather than deleting unrelated cloud data. This approach replaces or supplements the selected local save without requiring a full-console wipe.
USB restore replaces current console data
A USB restore is broader and more destructive. Sony warns that restoring a backup erases all data currently saved on the console, and erased data cannot be restored. Before restoring, copy or synchronize any newer saves, screenshots, clips, or settings that you still need. Do not treat a restore as a way to merge two consoles; it replaces the destination’s current data with the backup’s contents.
Use the same PlayStation account
Backup data is linked to the PlayStation account. Restoring to another console requires signing in with the same account associated with the backup. A different account cannot use the backup as though it owned it.
Check the system software version
The destination console’s current system software must be the same as or newer than the version installed when the backup was made. If the destination is on an older version, update it first, then attempt the restore. This requirement applies even when the USB drive and backup files are otherwise intact.

Cloud versus USB: which should you use before an update?
| Question | Cloud storage | USB full backup |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Protecting saves quickly and restoring one game | Keeping an offline copy of wider console data |
| Internet needed | Yes, for synchronization and download | No after the backup is created |
| PlayStation Plus needed | Yes | No membership is specified for the USB operation |
| PS5 individual-save USB copy | Not applicable; cloud is the supported targeted method | Not supported as an individual-file transfer |
| Drive format | None | FAT32 or exFAT; not the extended-storage format |
| Recovery scope | Selected saved data | Games and apps, saved data, screenshots, clips, and settings |
| Risk during recovery | Download targets the selected saved data | Restore erases all data currently on the console |
For most update preparations, enable cloud synchronization and perform a manual upload. Add the USB procedure when you need an offline copy, are changing consoles, or want to preserve screenshots, clips, settings, games, and apps in addition to saves.
Troubleshoot common backup problems
The PS5 does not accept the USB drive
- Confirm the drive is formatted FAT32 or exFAT.
- Confirm it is not configured as USB extended storage for installed games.
- Reconnect the drive and reopen Back Up and Restore.
- If the drive contains important files, preserve them elsewhere before reformatting.
The latest save is not in the cloud
- Confirm the console is connected to the internet.
- Check that Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled for Rest Mode.
- Open the correct category: Saved Data (PS5) for a PS5 game or Saved Data (PS4) for a PS4 game.
- Use Upload or Delete from Console Storage to perform a manual upload before updating.
You cannot find a PS5 save-transfer option
That is expected when you are looking for the PS4-style USB workflow. Individual PS5 saves are not copied to USB through that transfer path. Use cloud storage or Back Up Your PS5 instead.
The restore option warns that data will be erased
The warning applies to the full USB restore. Stop if the destination contains newer data, synchronize those saves to cloud storage first, and copy any irreplaceable media elsewhere. Proceed only when replacing the destination console’s contents is acceptable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The backup or restore appears to stop
Do not power off the PS5 while the operation is active. Wait for the completion message or an explicit error. If the operation fails, reconnect the correctly formatted drive and start the backup again; keep the console and drive connected for the entire attempt.
Quick Recap
