Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Back up before the shutdown date, and make two kinds of copies when possible: upload saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage and keep a local archive. On PS4, that archive can be a USB backup. On PS5, Sony does not allow an individual PS5 save to be copied directly to USB, so use the console’s full Back Up and Restore process. These copies protect locally stored progress only; they cannot recreate an online account, matchmaking service, server inventory, rankings, user-generated content, or virtual currency that the publisher keeps online.
- PS4: sync trophies, then use Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up with a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. Sony says the drive needs at least twice the space of the backup file.
- PS5: enable automatic cloud sync for both PS5 and PS4 saved data under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. PlayStation Plus provides up to 100 GB for PS5 saves and 100 GB for PS4 saves.
- Check the game’s shutdown notice: an offline campaign may remain playable, while an online-only game can become unusable. Capture anything that cannot be exported, such as online inventories, rankings, or creations.
First determine what kind of progress the game stores
A console backup is useful only for data that exists on the console. Many games combine a local save with a publisher account and live services, so a successful restore does not guarantee that every part of your profile will return.

Local data a backup can preserve
- Story or campaign progression saved on the PS4 or PS5.
- Locally stored settings, unlock flags, and other data included in the game’s save files.
- PS4 saved data that can be uploaded to PlayStation Plus or included in a PS4 USB backup.
- PS5 saved data included in a full PS5 console backup.
Online data a backup cannot recreate
- Publisher account records, matchmaking services, leaderboards, or rankings.
- Server-hosted inventories, seasons, live events, and user-generated-content servers.
- Cloud-only characters or progression that the game never writes to console storage.
- Purchased or earned virtual currency after the game’s online service ends. PlayStation Network terms state that "VC will not be usable after a game’s online servers are shutdown."
Read the publisher’s end-of-service notice for the specific title. Shutdowns are not equivalent: some games retain offline modes, some lose only online features, and online-only games may stop launching or connecting entirely.
Make this pre-shutdown checklist
- Find the exact deadline. Record the date, time, and time zone in the publisher’s notice. A final login, sync, or transfer performed after the cutoff may fail.
- Identify the service model. Confirm whether the game is online-only, whether an offline mode remains, and whether the publisher promises a migration tool or offline patch.
- Sign in to the correct account. Cloud uploads and console transfers are tied to the account currently signed in. Verify the account before starting.
- Sync trophies while the service is available. On PS4, open the function screen, choose Trophies, press OPTIONS, and select Sync Trophies.
- Make a local backup. Use the PS4 USB procedure below or the PS5 full-console backup procedure.
- Upload to PlayStation Plus. Enable automatic sync and confirm that the upload timestamp is current. Download one test save where practical to verify that the account can retrieve it.
- Keep the game installed. Download required patches and updates before delisting or service removal. An offline mode may depend on a final update.
- Document server-side items. Save screenshots or video of online inventories, rankings, character builds, or creations that the game does not export.
- Store copies separately. Keep the USB drive away from the console and maintain a second copy for irreplaceable progress.
Back up PS4 saves to a USB drive
A PS4 can create a local backup containing saved data and other selected console content. This is the most direct physical archive for PS4 saves.

Prepare the drive
- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Ensure it has at least twice the free space required by the PS4 backup file. Sony’s PS4 backup guidance specifies this two-times requirement.
- Copy anything important off the drive first. The PS4 backup workflow may require formatting or otherwise changing the drive.
- Do not confuse a backup drive with USB extended storage used for installing games.
Create the backup
- On the PS4, sync trophies: open the function screen, select Trophies, press OPTIONS, then choose Sync Trophies.
- Insert the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
- Choose the categories to include and make sure Saved Data is selected.
- Name the backup so you can identify the account, console, and date later.
- Start the backup and leave the console powered until the process completes.
- Use the system’s safe-removal instruction before disconnecting the drive, then label it with the PSN account, console, game set, and backup date.
Restore a PS4 backup
To restore a complete PS4 backup, connect the archive drive and open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore PS4 (the exact wording can vary slightly with system software). Restoration is a console-level operation, so read the on-screen warning about data that will be replaced before confirming. Keep the drive connected until the PS4 reports completion.
Copy individual PS4 saves with PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Cloud storage is useful when you want a save-level copy instead of a full-console archive. It requires an active PlayStation Plus entitlement and the same account used to create the save.
Upload a selected save manually
- Highlight the game in the PS4 Library.
- Press OPTIONS.
- Choose Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Select the local save and upload it to PlayStation Plus online storage.
- Check the resulting upload time in the cloud-data screen.
Download the save later
- Highlight the same game in the PS4 Library and press OPTIONS.
- Open Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Choose the download option and select the cloud save.
- Confirm any overwrite prompt only after checking which local file is newer.
Cloud storage and USB backups serve different purposes. Cloud copies are convenient and can be synchronized automatically, while a USB archive remains independent of the subscription and the online service. Keeping both protects against a failed drive, an outdated upload, or loss of account access.

Back up PS5 and PS4 saves to PlayStation Plus
On PS5, cloud controls for both generations are in Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Sony’s current support documentation lists up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data in cloud storage.
Upload PS5 saved data
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS5).
- Open the cloud upload/download controls.
- Choose the game and save files to upload, then confirm.
Upload PS4 saved data from a PS5
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS4).
- Open the cloud upload/download controls.
- Select the PS4 save files and upload them.
Turn on automatic synchronization
- In Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, open the automatic-sync settings.
- Enable Auto-Sync Saved Data for PS5 games.
- Enable Auto-Upload for PS4 games.
- Leave the PS5 connected to the internet in Rest Mode so synchronization can run.
After enabling these settings, check the cloud timestamp rather than assuming a save has uploaded. A console that is offline, powered down completely, or signed into another account cannot complete the expected sync.
Use a PS5 local archive correctly
Sony explicitly does not allow an individual PS5 save to be copied from the PS5 console directly to a USB drive. The local alternative is a full-console backup through the PS5 Back Up and Restore workflow.

Create the PS5 backup
- Connect a USB drive with sufficient free space and copy any unrelated files elsewhere first.
- Open the PS5 system settings and choose the current Back Up and Restore menu.
- Select Back Up Your PS5 (the label can vary with system software).
- Include saved data and any other categories you need, then start the backup.
- Keep the console powered and the drive connected until the completion message appears.
- Label the drive with the account, console, and date, and store it separately.
Because this is a full-console archive rather than a single-save export, plan for more storage and more restoration time than a PS4 save copy. Follow the menu’s warning about data replacement when restoring.
Transfer saves between PS4 and PS5
PS4 to PS5
A PS4 save can be copied from a USB device to a PS5, or moved with Sony’s console-transfer tool. The USB route is useful when the PS4 is no longer available on the same network.
- On the PS4, create the backup or save copy while signed into the account that owns the save.
- Connect the USB device to the PS5.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, choose Saved Data (PS4), and select the USB option.
- Choose the game and save, then copy it to PS5 console storage.
- Launch the compatible PS5 or PS4 version and verify the save appears before deleting anything from the source.
PS5 to PS5
Sony’s transfer tool can move compatible saved data between two PS5 consoles when both use the same account and are connected to the same network. Keep both consoles on during the transfer and do not interrupt the network connection. If the source PS5 is unavailable, use the full-console backup instead.

Compatibility warnings
- A PS4 save is not automatically a PS5 save. The game must support importing or reading the older format.
- Some games use separate PS4 and PS5 save systems. Confirm the publisher’s migration instructions before overwriting a newer file.
- A transfer moves console data; it does not move server-side inventories, rankings, or virtual currency that the service controls.
Do not mistake extended storage for save backup
USB extended storage is designed primarily for installing and moving game applications, not for exporting individual saves. Sony lists a 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum for compatible PS5 and PS4 extended storage. PS5 games stored there must be copied back to console storage before they can be played.
| Option | What it stores | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 USB backup | Selected PS4 console data, including saved data | Offline archive independent of a subscription | Drive must be FAT32 or exFAT and have at least twice the backup file’s required space |
| PS4 cloud copy | Individual PS4 saves | Quick upload and restore of selected files | Requires PlayStation Plus and account access |
| PS5 cloud storage | PS5 and PS4 saved data | Automatic synchronization and recovery | Capacity is up to 100 GB for PS5 saves and 100 GB for PS4 saves |
| PS5 full-console backup | Saved data and other selected PS5 console content | Local PS5 archive | Individual PS5 saves cannot be exported directly to USB |
| USB extended storage | Installed game applications | Freeing internal storage and moving games | It is not an individual-save backup; PS5 games must be copied back before play |
What a shutdown may leave playable
The result depends on how the game was designed. Sony’s decommissioned-server examples illustrate three different outcomes.
Recommended Free Tools
| Game example | After online service ends | What the example teaches |
|---|---|---|
| inFAMOUS 2 | User-generated-content access ends, while the offline campaign remains playable | A server feature can disappear without removing local story progress |
| GUNS UP! | The game becomes unplayable because it requires online access | A local backup cannot make an online-only title work offline |
| Gran Turismo Sport | Community, Open Lobby, Sport Mode, online features, and online items end; offline portions remain | Some local gameplay can survive even when substantial online functionality does not |
Polyphony Digital’s end-of-service notice for Gran Turismo Sport states that "all gameplay progression will continue to be saved through Saved Data on the PlayStation®4 system." That distinction—local saved data versus server-held services—is the model to look for in any shutdown notice.

Verify and protect your archive
Check the upload or backup date
Open the cloud-management screen after uploading and confirm the timestamp is newer than your final play session. For a USB archive, reconnect the drive and confirm that the console recognizes the backup before putting it away.
Test a second copy when possible
Download one cloud save to a spare console or another compatible installation only when you can avoid overwriting a newer local file. A test confirms account access, cloud visibility, and basic file integrity.
Label and separate the media
Write the PSN account, console model, games included, and backup date on the drive label. Keep the drive in a different location from the console, and make a second USB copy for especially valuable saves.

Troubleshoot common backup failures
The PS4 rejects the USB drive
- Confirm the drive is formatted FAT32 or exFAT.
- Check that the free space is at least twice the size required by the backup.
- Copy valuable files elsewhere before reformatting, then retry the backup.
- Try a different USB port or a different drive if the console still cannot detect it.
The PS5 cloud save is not current
- Check that the console is signed into the account that owns the save.
- Confirm the PS5 is online and that automatic synchronization is enabled for the correct PS5 or PS4 category.
- Leave the console connected to the internet in Rest Mode, then check the cloud timestamp again.
- Upload manually from the saved-data settings if automatic sync remains pending.
A transferred save does not appear in the game
- Verify that the game version supports importing the save format.
- Check that the destination console uses the same account.
- Look for an in-game import or continue option rather than expecting the save to appear automatically.
- Do not delete the source copy until the destination loads the expected progress.
The restored game still shows no online inventory
This usually indicates server-side data rather than a failed save restore. A console backup cannot recreate a publisher account, live inventory, ranking, user-generated-content server, or virtual currency after shutdown.
Recommended backup plan by console
| Your setup | Minimum action | More resilient plan |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 only | Sync trophies and create a USB backup with saved data | Add a PlayStation Plus upload and retain two labeled USB copies |
| PS5 only | Upload PS5 saves to PlayStation Plus | Enable automatic sync and create a full PS5 USB backup |
| PS4 game played on PS5 | Upload or copy the PS4 save and confirm compatibility | Keep the original PS4 copy, a cloud copy, and a verified PS5 copy |
| Online-only game | Save screenshots or video and read the shutdown notice | Keep any local data, but plan on the online service and server account becoming unavailable |
The safest practical combination is a current cloud copy plus a local archive, completed before the publisher’s deadline. It preserves everything the console actually owns while making the limits of server-dependent progress explicit.
