What a Playdate backup actually contains
Playdate stores writable game data separately from each game’s installed application. The device’s top-level Data folder is the important backup target: it contains saved state, progress, and other data that games are allowed to write. Copying that folder preserves the information most likely to be lost during a reset or filesystem repair.

The Games folder has a different purpose. It contains installed game files, not the save data itself. A backup of only Games can leave you with the applications but none of your progress. For that reason, copy the complete Data folder rather than selecting individual files or subfolders.
| Folder | Role | What to back up |
|---|---|---|
| Data | Writable game state, saves, and other per-game data | Copy the entire folder |
| Games | Installed game files | Separate from the save backup |
Each game has a writable Data directory that is separate from its read-only application bundle. That separation is why reinstalling or replacing a game does not automatically amount to a save backup, and why copying Data is the safest general-purpose step before troubleshooting.

Prepare before entering Data Disk mode
Use a data-capable USB cable
You need a USB cable that carries data, not a charge-only cable, plus a computer with enough free space for the Data folder. A USB-C data cable is the key physical accessory for the current Playdate connection workflow. If the Playdate charges but never appears on the computer, the cable is the first thing to replace or test.
Choose a durable backup location
Create a clearly named folder on the computer before you connect the console. Include the device and date in the name, such as Playdate-Data-2026-10-19. After the copy finishes, you can place a second copy on external USB storage for protection against a computer failure. Keep the original computer copy until the second copy has been checked.
Do not modify the mounted filesystem
Data Disk mode exposes the Playdate’s files directly. Panic cautions that accessing files on the device incorrectly can break its software. Do not rename, edit, move, or delete unrelated files while the volume is mounted. The procedure below is a copy operation only; it is not an invitation to reorganize the console’s folders.

Step-by-step: back up Playdate saves and data
- Connect the Playdate to the computer. Use the data-capable USB cable and wait for the device to finish any normal connection activity.
- Open the Data Disk command on the Playdate. From the Playdate home screen, go to Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk. Confirm the command if the device asks you to.
- Wait for the volume to mount. The Playdate reboots into Data Disk mode and should appear as a disk on the computer. Open that mounted volume in your operating system’s file manager.
- Locate the Data folder. At the Playdate volume’s top level, find the folder named Data. Do not substitute the Games folder.
- Copy the entire Data folder. Drag or copy it into the dated backup location you prepared. Preserve the folder structure and filenames exactly as they are. Do not open files in an editor or make changes to the original volume.
- Wait for the copy to finish. For a large collection, the file manager may take time to calculate or transfer all contents. Do not disconnect the cable while a copy dialog is active.
- Verify the copy. Open the backup folder on the computer and confirm that it contains Data and the expected game-specific subfolders or files. Check that the backup is not empty and that its modified date matches the copy you just made.
- Eject the Playdate safely. Use your operating system’s Eject or Unmount command for the Playdate volume. Wait until it disappears from the file manager before unplugging the cable.
- Leave Data Disk mode. On the Playdate, press A to return from Data Disk mode to the settings menu. Only now should you disconnect the cable if it is still attached.
Do not reset, delete files, reinstall software, or attempt other filesystem troubleshooting until the backup has completed and you have verified it. The original Data folder on the Playdate is your source; the newly copied folder is the recovery copy.
How to verify that the backup is usable
A successful copy dialog alone is not a complete check. Use these practical checks before changing anything on the console:
- Open the destination folder and confirm the top-level folder is named Data.
- Confirm the folder contains content rather than a zero-byte or empty directory.
- Look for folders or files corresponding to the games whose progress matters to you.
- Check that the computer reports the copy as complete and shows a plausible total size.
- If you made a second copy on external storage, open that copy as well and confirm the same Data structure is present.
Do not use the backup’s apparent size as proof that every game is represented: a game may not create its own Data directory until it has been launched and has written save information. The important check is that the complete Data folder was copied without errors.

Restore progress to another Playdate
Panic documents moving Data folder contents to a new Playdate. The destination device must be placed in Data Disk mode, just as the original was for the backup.
- Make sure the destination Playdate is connected with a data-capable USB cable.
- On the destination, choose Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk.
- Open the newly mounted Playdate volume on the computer.
- Keep a copy of the destination’s existing Data folder before replacing or merging anything. This gives you a way back if the destination already has newer progress.
- Open your backup and copy the backed-up Data folder’s contents into the corresponding Data location on the destination Playdate. Preserve names and folder structure.
- Allow the transfer to finish, then eject or unmount the destination volume through the operating system.
- Press A on the Playdate to leave Data Disk mode, disconnect safely, and launch the games to check their progress.
Copying the Data contents does not install a game that is absent from the destination. Install or sideload the relevant game through the normal process first, then restore its saved data. If a game is not present, there may be no matching application for the restored files to use.
Sideloaded games: why a save folder may be missing
Sideloaded games can require an extra step. Launch a newly sideloaded copy at least once before expecting its Data directory to appear. Until the game runs and writes data, there may be no folder to inspect or restore into.

Be especially careful when replacing a sideloaded build. Panic notes that old and new builds can use different folder names. In that situation, the new game may start with no progress even though the old save still exists in the backup. Compare the old and new game folders and, when appropriate, copy the save contents manually from the old folder into the new folder. Do not rename unrelated directories or delete the old copy until the new build has successfully read the restored progress.
If both an old and a new sideloaded version remain installed, launch the intended version and check which folder it updates. Keeping duplicate builds can make it appear that a save vanished when the game is simply reading a different folder.

The Playdate does not appear as a disk
- Confirm that you selected Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk, rather than leaving the device in its normal operating mode.
- Try a different USB port and a known data-capable cable. Charging by itself does not prove that data lines work.
- Wait through the reboot, then check the computer’s file manager for a newly mounted volume.
- If the computer reports a disk error, do not initialize, format, or repair the Playdate volume. Disconnect only after the operating system has stopped attempting the failed operation, then retry with another cable or computer.
The Data folder is not where expected
Open the mounted Playdate volume’s top level, not a random subfolder. The target is the folder named Data; the Games folder is not a substitute. For a sideloaded title, launch it once on the relevant Playdate so it can create its writable data area.

The copy stops or reports an error
- Leave the Playdate connected and note which file caused the error, if the operating system identifies one.
- Retry the copy to a fresh destination folder rather than overwriting a partial backup.
- Check free space on the computer or external drive.
- Do not start deleting files from the Playdate to make the transfer fit; first secure whatever complete copy you can and then investigate the storage problem separately.
A restored game shows no progress
- Verify that the game is installed on the destination Playdate and has been launched at least once.
- Check that the restored folder name matches the build the game is actually running.
- For sideloaded games, compare old and new build folders and copy the saved contents manually when the names differ.
- Confirm that the destination Data transfer completed before you ejected the volume.
You disconnected without ejecting
Reconnect the Playdate, allow it to mount in Data Disk mode, and perform a normal eject before disconnecting again. Avoid making additional file changes until the volume has been safely unmounted. An interrupted write can leave the filesystem or a partially copied file in an uncertain state.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Backing up Games instead of Data: installed applications do not replace saved state.
- Copying only one visible save file: the complete Data folder may contain files a particular game needs in addition to the obvious progress file.
- Editing files while mounted: direct changes can break Playdate software or make a game unable to read its data.
- Unplugging during a copy: wait for the transfer to finish and eject the volume first.
- Restoring before installing the game: the destination needs the corresponding game to make use of restored data.
- Assuming every sideloaded build shares one folder: different builds can create different folder names and may require a manual save-content transfer.
- Keeping only one copy: retain the computer backup until any reset, repair, or migration has been completed and checked.
A safe order for reset or repair
- Connect the Playdate with a data-capable USB cable.
- Reboot to Data Disk from Settings > System.
- Copy the entire Data folder to a dated computer location.
- Open the copy and verify that it contains the expected content.
- Optionally create a second copy on external USB storage.
- Eject the Playdate volume and press A to leave Data Disk mode.
- Only then perform the reset, repair, reinstall, or other troubleshooting action.
- Afterward, restore Data to the same Playdate or another one by using Data Disk mode and copying the contents into the corresponding location.
This sequence separates the reversible step (making a copy) from the risky step (changing the console’s software or files). It also leaves you with a known restore path if troubleshooting removes local progress.
