What a durable game backup must contain
A launcher account is not a complete preservation plan. Access can depend on an account, a working launcher, a particular game build, third-party activation, or an online service. Separating the two things you need to preserve makes the recovery plan explicit.

| Preservation target | What to save | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Installable game | Installer files, numbered data parts, patches, DLC installers, language packs, and required extras | Lets you recreate the game files without downloading everything again |
| Playable state | Save games, profiles, settings, key bindings, and title-specific configuration | Lets you resume progress and restore a familiar setup |
| Recovery context | Storefront, edition, version, account requirement, activation key, launcher or DRM dependency, operating-system notes, and mod list | Explains how the files must be installed and which services may still be required |
Keep installers and saves in separate folders even when they are backed up to the same device. An installer archive can be replaced when a new build arrives; a save archive should retain dated snapshots so a damaged or overwritten save can be recovered.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Record the identity. Write the storefront, game title, edition, region if relevant, installed version, and whether the game uses a separate launcher or account.
- List additional content. Note every purchased or installed DLC package, expansion, language pack, patch, texture pack, and mod. An installer without a required expansion may not reproduce the state you are preserving.
- Locate the saves. Check the game’s documentation and settings first. Then inspect the user-profile folders described below. Do not assume the installation directory contains saves.
- Close the game and launcher. Copying while a game is writing a save can capture a partial file. Wait for cloud synchronization to finish if you use it, then exit cleanly.
- Record recovery requirements. Include the account email domain or account name (not the password), activation keys stored in a password manager, controller or input dependencies, and any operating-system or runtime requirement you know about.
Use a spreadsheet or plain text file beside the archive. A useful row has columns for Store, Edition, Version, Installer folder, Save folder, DLC, Mods, Account/DRM, and Last verified.
Steam: use Backup for eligible installations, but archive saves separately
What Steam Backup does
Steam Support describes its Backup feature as a way to save copies of game files and restore game files from backup copies. The feature applies to games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. A title that relies on another launcher, a separate installer, or unusual update handling may not be covered by this workflow.
How to create a Steam backup
- Open the Steam desktop client and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open the library, select the game, and use Steam’s backup option from the client’s game-management or library menus. The exact menu wording can vary by client release.
- Select the game and choose a destination with enough free space for the complete backup set.
- Let Steam finish writing every backup file. Do not rename, split, or delete individual files from the set.
- Create a folder beside the backup that records the title, edition, Steam app identity if shown by the client, installed version, and backup date.
- Copy the complete set to a second independent storage location and verify that both copies contain the same files and sizes.
Steam’s backup preserves Steam-managed files; it does not turn the game into a launcher-free installer. Recovery still depends on Steam and the owning account, and a title may still require an online check or a separate service.
Steam Cloud is a convenience layer, not your only archive
Steam says Cloud can store game settings, save games, profile statistics, and other user-specific data. That is useful when moving between computers, but it is synchronization rather than a dated, independent archive. Playing in Offline Mode prevents synchronization until you return online, which can produce a conflict between the local and cloud versions.

Copy the local save folder yourself. Keep dated versions such as SaveFiles/2026-10-19-before-upgrade and SaveFiles/2026-11-02-after-DLC. If Steam presents a cloud-conflict dialog during recovery, stop and compare the dates and file sizes before choosing which side to keep. Do not let a newer, empty, or damaged local folder overwrite the known-good archive.
GOG: preserve the offline installer set
Why GOG’s offline files are useful
GOG Support provides an “OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS” download option. These installers are intended to install a game without the GOG app, making them the most launcher-independent route in this comparison. Independence from the app does not necessarily remove account, activation, operating-system, or third-party requirements for every title.
Download every part
- Open the game in your GOG library and choose the offline backup installer downloads.
- Download the main executable and every numbered data file. Multi-file installers are a single set; one missing part can make installation fail.
- Download separately listed patches, language files, bonus content, and DLC installers that match the edition you own.
- Keep all parts together in one folder. Do not change filenames, extensions, or numbering.
- Record the build date or version shown in the library and the date you downloaded it.
- Copy the complete folder to your second backup location and check that the file count and total size match.
GOG’s developer documentation notes that an offline installer is generated after a build is published and may take several hours to appear in a game library. If a newly released build is not yet available, retain the existing installer set and check again later rather than deleting the working copy.

Save files still need their own archive
An offline installer does not automatically include your current progress. Copy the game’s save, profile, and configuration folders separately, and label them with the matching game version. If you use mods, preserve the mod files and load order in a separate folder; a save can depend on content that is absent from a clean installation.

Epic Games Store and other launchers: protect local saves before uninstalling
Do not assume Cloud Saves are available
Epic Games Support warns that when a game does not support Cloud Saves, uninstalling it can delete files in the installation location, including save files. Cloud-save support is title-dependent, so treat every local save as disposable until you have copied and opened it successfully elsewhere.
- Open the game’s support or documentation page and identify its save location.
- Exit the game and Epic Games Launcher completely.
- Copy the entire save folder, including subfolders and files whose names look like profiles, slots, settings, or checkpoints.
- Place the copy in a dated folder outside the installation directory.
- Only after the copy is verified should you uninstall, move, or repair the game.
Epic notes that games can store saves in different folders. If you cannot identify the location, consult the game developer’s documentation or support channel. Do not infer the path from another game, and do not assume that moving the installation folder moves the saves with it.
Other launchers
Apply the same rule to every launcher: identify whether the title uses cloud synchronization, locate the local files, preserve the installer or installation source, and document account or DRM requirements. A launcher’s library listing is not proof that an offline installer or local save copy exists.

There is no universal save directory. A title may use the installation folder, your Documents folder, a roaming profile, a local application-data folder, or a custom directory chosen by its developer.

Use the least-guesswork methods first
- Check in-game options. Some games display a profile or save path in settings, troubleshooting, or log screens.
- Read the developer’s support page. Search for the exact game and platform, not just a genre or engine.
- Inspect recently changed files. Make a test save, exit, and search Windows File Explorer for files and folders modified at that time. Repeat with a second test save to distinguish the active location from static installation data.
- Check common profile locations. Inspect
%USERPROFILE%Documents,%APPDATA%, and%LOCALAPPDATA%, including folders named for the publisher or game. These are places to look, not guaranteed paths. - Check for hidden folders. Enable hidden items in File Explorer when documentation points to a hidden location.
Copy the whole title-specific folder rather than individual files unless the documentation explicitly identifies a single file. Include timestamps, profile folders, screenshots if they are part of the game’s progression, and configuration files that affect input or accessibility.
Build a storage layout that can be understood years later
Use a predictable hierarchy so you can find a game without remembering which launcher you used:
Game-Archive/Store/Game-Name/Edition-Version/Installers/Game-Archive/Store/Game-Name/Edition-Version/SaveFiles/Game-Archive/Store/Game-Name/Edition-Version/Documentation/
Inside Documentation, save a plain-text manifest containing the backup date, installed build, DLC list, mod list, save path, launcher, account requirement, and restoration notes. Never store account passwords in this folder; use a password manager instead.
Use two independent copies
Keep the primary archive on an external hard drive or external SSD that is disconnected when you are not backing up. Make a second copy on another drive or an independent backup service. Two copies on the same constantly connected device do not protect against drive failure, accidental deletion, ransomware, or a faulty sync operation.

For a large library, size the device from the total installer archive plus room for dated save versions and future patches. Do not fill a drive to its limit; leave working space for temporary extraction and restoration tests.
Check large archives
For multi-file installers, retain a checksum manifest when practical. If you do not create checksums, at minimum record each file’s name, size, and count. After copying, compare the manifest with the destination. A matching file count alone cannot prove that contents are identical, but a mismatch is an immediate warning.

A backup is useful only if the files can be read and the recovery steps are known. Test one representative title from each storefront, and test any game that is especially difficult to replace.

- Install the game on another Windows installation or a separate test library using the archived installer or storefront workflow.
- Apply the archived patch and DLC versions documented in your manifest.
- Launch once, quit, and locate the newly created save folder.
- Replace or merge that folder with the archived save copy, preserving the original test files until the result is confirmed.
- Launch again and load the expected profile or save slot. Check progression, settings, and mod-dependent content.
- Record the result and any additional step, such as signing in, installing a runtime, or enabling a specific launcher.
For Steam, test restoration through Steam’s restore workflow and be prepared for a cloud-conflict prompt. For GOG, run the offline installer with every required data part present. For Epic, reinstall first and then copy the local saves; do not assume the launcher will recreate them.
Maintenance: when to refresh the archive
- After a major patch: retain the previous installer or patch when it is needed for an older save or mod setup, then archive the new build separately.
- After DLC or an edition change: add the new installers and update the manifest so the required content is unambiguous.
- After changing mods: preserve the mod files, load order, and a save made before the change. A modded save may not open correctly with a different load order.
- After meaningful progress: copy saves on a schedule that matches how much progress you can afford to lose. Keep several dated snapshots for important campaigns.
- During routine checks: open a sample installer or perform a test restore periodically. This is more informative than checking whether a drive merely appears in File Explorer.
- When hardware is replaced: migrate the archive to the new device, compare manifests, and keep the old copy until the new one has passed a restore test.
Common failures and the practical fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Installer says a data file is missing | A numbered part was not downloaded, renamed, or copied | Compare the folder with the manifest, restore the original filename, and obtain the missing part from the storefront. |
| Game starts with no progress | The save folder was not archived, the wrong profile was copied, or the game uses a different path | Repeat the test-save search, compare modification times, and copy the complete title-specific folder. |
| Cloud conflict appears | Offline play or a local restore created a version different from the cloud copy | Stop synchronization temporarily, compare dated archives, and choose the known-good files deliberately before resuming sync. |
| Uninstall removed saves | The title lacked cloud support or stored saves in its installation directory | Restore the separately archived save folder; do not rely on reinstalling the game to recreate it. |
| Restored save will not load | Game version, DLC, mods, profile identity, or operating-system dependency differs | Match the documented build and content, restore the mod setup, and test with the same account or profile. |
| Archive drive reports errors | Media degradation, an unsafe disconnect, or an incomplete copy | Stop using that copy as the sole source, recover from the independent copy, replace the drive, and recreate and verify the archive. |
| Installer completes but game requires sign-in | The archive preserves files, not ownership or online-service authorization | Use the documented account, activation key, or third-party launcher and record that dependency in the manifest. |
A storefront-by-storefront decision guide
| Storefront | Installer preservation | Save preservation | Main maintenance burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Use Steam Backup for titles that completely download, install, and patch through Steam; recovery remains tied to Steam. | Steam Cloud may synchronize supported data, but keep a separate local copy and watch for Offline Mode conflicts. | Retain complete backup sets and verify cloud-versus-local choices during restoration. |
| GOG | Download offline backup installers, every numbered data part, patches, DLC, and extras; the set is designed to install without the app. | Copy saves independently because the installer does not contain current progress. | Refresh manually after new builds; newly published offline installers may take several hours to appear. |
| Epic Games Store | Preserve the available installation source and document launcher or account requirements. | Cloud Saves depend on the title; local files may be deleted on uninstall when cloud support is absent. | Find and copy local saves before uninstalling or moving the game. |
| Other launchers | Check whether the launcher offers a complete backup or only redownloads files. | Confirm the exact save path with the developer and archive it separately. | Document unique DRM, patch, and account steps for each title. |
The long-term checklist
- Installer files and save files are in separate folders.
- The game title, edition, version, DLC, patches, and mods are recorded.
- Steam backup sets are complete, GOG installer parts are all present, and Epic saves were copied before uninstalling.
- One archive is stored locally and a second independent copy exists.
- Large sets have checksums or a file-count-and-size manifest.
- Account, activation, launcher, and operating-system dependencies are documented without storing passwords in plain text.
- At least one restoration has been completed successfully and dated.
- The archive is refreshed after major updates and checked periodically.
This arrangement gives you the best chance of reinstalling a PC game years later: a complete installer source, separately preserved progress, two independent copies, and notes that explain the dependencies a future you may no longer remember.
