Before installing or updating any Gears of War: E-Day mod, close the game and copy the entire local save folder to a separate, dated location. For the Steam version, SteamDB lists %USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local/Microsoft\Gears of War E-Day\Saves\{64BitSteamID}, with *.sav files. Xbox App and Microsoft Store installations may use different locations, so do not apply the Steam path to those editions without first confirming where their local saves are stored.
Keep the original folder untouched, retain the dated copy until the modded game has loaded successfully, and preserve any mod-content folders separately when a mod manager or manual installation changes them.

Why a file backup matters before modding
A campaign save slot is not the same thing as an external backup. Official Gears of War support says the campaign allows up to five different playthroughs or states, but those slots remain inside the game’s save system. They do not give you a second copy of the files that a mod installation might replace or alter.
A separate copy gives you a known pre-mod state. If a mod causes the game to stop recognizing progress, you can remove the changed files, restore the dated copy, and test the unmodded or repaired installation. The safest rule is simple: no mod installation or update starts until the complete save directory has been copied elsewhere.

Epic Games Support describes the operation as making “a copy of a local save game.” That wording matters: copying is safer than moving, renaming, or overwriting the original. Leave the active folder in place until you have verified that the backup is complete.
First identify your storefront
E-Day can be installed through Steam, the Xbox App, or the Microsoft Store. The storefront is the first thing to establish because Windows save locations are not guaranteed to be identical between editions.

The manifest uses a *.sav pattern. The {64BitSteamID} portion represents the account-specific directory, so the folder name on your computer will be a numeric identifier rather than the literal text shown above.
Xbox App and Microsoft Store
There is no single official E-Day Windows path published for every Xbox App or Microsoft Store installation. Epic Games Support notes that games can use different save folders, and Unreal Engine documentation says that non-development platforms vary to accommodate their file systems. Treat any Steam path found online as Steam-specific unless the Xbox or Microsoft Store installation itself shows the same location.

If you are unsure which edition is installed, check the launcher you use to start E-Day and record it before browsing for files. Do not substitute a path from another Gears title or another Unreal Engine game.

Minimum: the complete E-Day save directory
For a save-protection backup, copy the entire E-Day save directory, not just one visible file. Include every .sav file and any subfolders that are present. Copying the folder preserves the account-specific directory structure and reduces the chance of omitting another campaign state.
Optional: mod and configuration files
A save backup protects campaign progress, but a mod installation can also add or replace content files. The E-Day Vortex extension documents two relevant operations for the Steam version: installing .sav files and placing Unreal Engine 4SS LogicMod packages under Paks/LogicMods. If you use that workflow, keep a separate record or copy of the pre-mod content folders and configuration files that the individual mod instructions identify. This is a broader backup than the save-folder copy and may require substantially more storage.
Do not assume that restoring a save folder also removes a mod. Save data and mod content are separate parts of the installation; restore both when troubleshooting requires it.
Step-by-step: create a pre-mod backup
1. Write down the edition and the planned change
Note whether you are using Steam, Xbox App, or Microsoft Store, and record the mod name and version you intend to install. This small record makes it easier to identify which files changed if you need to roll back. The path and file-handling steps below are written for a local Windows save; platform-specific storage can differ.
2. Exit E-Day completely
Close the game before copying. A running game can still be writing a save, and a copy made during that write may not represent a complete state. Return to the desktop and wait until the game’s process has closed before opening the save directory.

3. Open the Steam save location, if applicable
- Open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar and enter
%USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local/Microsoft\Gears of War E-Day\Saves\{64BitSteamID}, replacing the account-specific portion with the directory shown on your computer. - Look for the E-Day save folder and its
.savfiles.
The path above comes from SteamDB’s E-Day cloud-file manifest. It is a useful Steam discovery path, not a universal path for every storefront.
4. If the folder is missing, create a normal save first
Launch E-Day, create or load a campaign save, exit the game normally, and check the path again. This practical discovery step can reveal the folder after the game has generated its first local save. If no folder appears, do not create a random replacement directory based on another title; continue checking the edition-specific storage used by your launcher.
5. Inspect before copying
Confirm that the directory belongs to E-Day and contains the files you expect. The Steam manifest identifies *.sav files. Do not delete, rename, or open a save in an editor as part of this check. Your objective is only to identify the complete folder that the game currently uses.

6. Copy the entire folder
- Right-click the E-Day save directory and choose Copy.
- Navigate to a second location, such as a USB flash drive, external SSD, or a clearly separate folder on another drive.
- Choose Paste.
- Rename the pasted folder with the game, purpose, and date. For example:
E-Day-pre-mod-2026-10-19.
Keep the original save directory in its active location. A backup on the same physical drive is convenient, but a separate drive gives you protection if the original drive develops a problem. A removable drive is optional; the essential requirement is a distinct retained copy.
7. Check that the copy is complete
Open the dated backup and confirm that all of the original .sav files and subfolders are present. Compare the visible contents with the source folder. Do not delete the source to make the two locations “match”; the source is the live copy and the dated folder is the recovery copy.
8. Preserve the backup before every mod update
Make a new dated copy before installing a different mod, updating an existing mod, or replacing a save supplied by a mod. A single pre-mod copy is useful for one change, but separate dates let you return to the state immediately before a later change.

Save-folder backup versus a broader mod backup
Choose the smallest backup that still protects what you care about, but understand what each option can and cannot restore.

The first row is the non-negotiable step for protecting saves. The broader options add recovery coverage; they do not replace the need to preserve the complete save directory.
Install mods only after the copy exists
Steam save mods
The E-Day Vortex extension documents installation of .sav files for the Steam version. If a mod supplies a save, keep your dated pre-mod folder before allowing the tool to replace or add files. Read the extension’s instructions for the exact package operation, because a supplied save is not interchangeable with your existing campaign state.
LogicMod packages
The same extension documents placing UE4SS LogicMod packages under Paks/LogicMods. That is content installation, not a save backup. Retain the pre-mod save folder even when the mod appears to touch only the game content, and preserve the original content files or configuration locations identified by the mod’s instructions if you need a complete rollback.
Manual installation
For a manual mod, copy the save folder first, then follow the mod author’s file list exactly. Do not use a save backup as permission to overwrite unrelated directories. If the instructions call for replacing a file, keep the original in a separately named pre-mod location so you can undo that replacement.
How to restore a pre-mod save
Restore only after closing E-Day. Preserve the changed files before replacing them so you can diagnose the failure or return to the newer state later.

- Exit E-Day completely.
- Copy the current, changed save directory to a separate troubleshooting folder. Use a name such as
E-Day-after-mod-2026-10-19. - Open the active E-Day save location for your storefront.
- Move the changed active folder out of the way or rename it; do not delete it while you are still troubleshooting.
- Copy the dated pre-mod folder into the active location, preserving the original folder structure and account-specific directory name.
- Launch E-Day and check whether the expected campaign state is available.
- Keep the dated backup until the game has loaded the restored state successfully and you have confirmed that the result is usable.
This is a file-management recovery sequence, not a publisher-provided restore utility. If the game still does not recognize the progress, keep both the pre-mod and post-mod copies intact and troubleshoot the content changes separately.
Troubleshooting common backup problems
The Steam folder does not exist
First confirm that you are looking at the Steam installation and that the account-specific directory is correct. Create or load a campaign save, exit E-Day, and check the listed path again. If it remains absent, avoid guessing from another Gears game; the installed edition may use a different location.
You copied only one .sav file
Return to the source directory and copy the entire E-Day save folder, including every .sav file and subfolder. A single file may represent only one state and can omit other campaign playthroughs or supporting data.
The backup has the wrong date or an unclear name
Rename the retained copy to include the game, “pre-mod,” and the date. A name such as E-Day-pre-mod-2026-10-19 makes it clear which installation state it represents. If you made several copies on one day, add a time or mod version to distinguish them.
The game loses progress after a mod change
Do not immediately overwrite the changed folder with another copy. Close the game, preserve the changed folder, and then restore the dated pre-mod copy. If the restored save works, the next investigation should focus on the mod or content files that changed, not on deleting the only evidence of the failure.
You are using Xbox App or Microsoft Store
Do not rely on the SteamDB path. Epic Games Support and Unreal Engine documentation both indicate that save locations can vary by game and platform. Identify the local save location used by that installation before making any changes, and apply the same copy, date, separation, and restore principles once you have found it.
Important limits to keep in mind
- The five campaign slots documented by Gears of War support are useful for managing playthroughs, but they are not an external file backup.
- The Steam path listed by SteamDB is not evidence of a universal Xbox App or Microsoft Store path.
- A save-folder copy protects campaign files; it does not automatically preserve mod packages, configuration files, or other content folders.
- The E-Day Vortex extension’s documented
.savandPaks/LogicModsoperations apply to its stated Steam workflow. Follow the current instructions for the specific mod and edition you use. - Keep both the original active folder and the dated backup until the modded or restored game has been tested successfully.
A repeatable pre-mod routine
For every E-Day mod, use the same order: identify the storefront, close the game, locate the active save directory, copy the whole folder, store the copy separately under a dated name, preserve any relevant mod-content files, and only then install or update the mod. Before a later change, make another dated copy rather than reusing the first one. This routine turns a risky overwrite into a reversible file change without relying on the campaign’s five in-game slots.
