Keep that pre-choice checkpoint until you have seen the consequences and are certain you will not want to return.
Automatic cloud saving is helpful, but it is not proof that the right moment was preserved. A cloud copy only provides a rollback if it predates the choice. Sync conflicts can also replace the copy you wanted, so compare timestamps and protect local files before selecting an option.

Why a pre-choice checkpoint is different from an ordinary save
Many games let you replay a scene, but a major decision can permanently alter quests, companions, achievements, romance paths, faction relationships, or the ending. An autosave made after the conversation may already contain the new branch. A manual save made at the last safe point gives you a known state to which you can return.

The useful backup is therefore defined by three facts: it was created before the choice, it belongs to the correct character and slot, and it can still be restored without destroying the only current copy. A cloud service that silently synchronized the post-choice state is not a time machine.

The repeatable backup procedure
- Reach the last safe point. Stop before the dialogue option, mission confirmation, point-of-no-return warning, or other action that can alter the story.
- Create a fresh manual save. Choose a new slot rather than overwriting an older checkpoint if the game permits it. Use a slot name or note that identifies the character and decision.
- Leave the game in a stable state. Finish the save operation, then pause at a menu or close the game. Do not force a shutdown while an icon indicates writing or syncing.
- Wait for synchronization. Give the platform time to report that the save is uploaded or synchronized. A recently saved file that is still pending upload is not yet a dependable cloud backup.
- Make a second copy. Use the platform’s cloud feature, a USB or external-drive backup where supported, or a dated copy of the PC save folder. Two independent copies protect you from a failed upload or an accidental overwrite.
- Record what the copy contains. Include the game, character or profile, slot number, and timestamp in a folder name or note. For example:
GameName_Slot03_BeforeCouncil_2026-10-19_2130. - Make the choice and retain the checkpoint. Do not delete or overwrite the pre-choice copy until the consequences are clear. If you later roll back, first preserve the current post-choice save.
PlayStation save backups
PS5: uploading PS4-format saves
Sony’s current support path for PS4-format saves on PS5 is Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage. Select the game and the pre-choice save, then wait for the upload to finish before launching the decision.
This route applies to PS4-format save data. The available menus and handling for a particular PS5-native title can differ, so check the title’s current support information before assuming that a PS4 procedure applies to it.
PS4: upload a selected save
On PS4, highlight the game in the Library, press OPTIONS, choose Upload/Download Saved Data, and select Upload. Upload the newly created slot rather than relying on an older automatic copy. Online storage requires a PlayStation Plus membership.
PS4: create a physical console backup
Sony also documents a full-console backup to a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The drive must have at least twice the storage space required by the backup file. This is a broader console backup rather than a simple single-slot export, and restoration follows Sony’s console-backup rules.
A USB flash drive or portable external drive is useful here because you can retain a dated physical copy outside the console. Label the drive or its backup folder with the date and decision point, and do not format or reuse it until you have finished with the checkpoint.

Xbox cloud saves
Xbox’s cloud storage is the normal save-backup route identified in Capcom’s all-platform support guidance. The exact menu labels and the behavior used to restore a save can vary by game and by service state. Before making an irreversible choice, confirm that the title has finished syncing, then consult that game’s current Xbox support page for the final button path and any title-specific restrictions.
Because the service normally keeps the platform copy synchronized, an Xbox cloud save is safe only when synchronization completed while the game was still at the pre-choice state. If you have played past the decision, do not assume that opening the game on another console will reveal the earlier version; it may download the newest synchronized state instead.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 Save Data Cloud
Back up from the HOME Menu
Nintendo’s documented procedure is:
- From the HOME Menu, highlight the game.
- Press – or +.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user profile.
- Select Back Up Save Data.
You can reach the same function through System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud. Run the backup after creating the in-game checkpoint, and verify the displayed backup time before selecting the story option.
Check compatibility and the one-copy limitation
Save Data Cloud support is not universal. Nintendo warns that some software displays “Save Data Cloud backup is not supported for this software.” Check the individual game before depending on the cloud as your only copy.
Nintendo’s support guidance also describes scenarios in which only one save-data backup per game can be stored in the cloud. That means a later backup can replace the earlier checkpoint. If you need several decision points, keep the older ones in separate in-game slots when available and preserve another copy through a method the title and console support.

Download cautiously
When moving between consoles, download the newest backup before playing on the other system. A download can replace the save currently on that console. Nintendo states: “Overwritten save data cannot be recovered.” Before downloading, preserve the current save when the game or your workflow gives you a way to do so, and compare the backup timestamp with the decision you intend to undo.
Steam Cloud and manual PC copies
Confirm that the game uses Steam Cloud
Steam Cloud stores save games and other user-specific data when a game supports the feature. Check the game’s Steam store page or its properties for Cloud support before treating synchronization as a backup. Games that do not participate in Steam Cloud require a manual copy of their save files.
Finish syncing before you play
Make the in-game save, exit or suspend long enough for Steam to complete synchronization, and confirm that the client no longer shows a pending sync. If you launch the game on another computer before this finishes, the newer or older local state can become the version Steam offers to upload.
Handle a cloud/local conflict deliberately
Steam may show a conflict between cloud data and local files. Do not click through reflexively. Steam warns that ignoring the message and selecting “play game” could create a conflict between cloud and local files, resulting in lost data or progress.
First preserve the local save folder by copying it to a dated folder or another drive. Then compare the timestamps and identify which copy is the pre-choice state. Choose the cloud or local option that contains that state, not simply the option presented first. If the timestamps are ambiguous, keep both copies and resolve them outside the game rather than overwriting either one.

Make a dated folder copy
For durable protection, copy the game’s save folder to another drive before launching the game again. Locations differ by title and publisher: some games use a folder under the user profile, while others store saves in a game-specific directory. Use the game’s documentation or the files created after a known save to identify the correct folder. Include the game, profile, slot, and timestamp in the destination folder name.

The safest arrangement is a fresh in-game slot plus a platform copy and, when supported, a separately retained local or physical copy. Automatic synchronization is convenient; a manually named second copy gives you clearer control over what existed before the decision.
How to roll back without losing the current outcome
- Stop playing immediately. Close the game normally so it does not write another autosave over the state you want.
- Protect the current save. Upload or copy the post-choice state, or create a new in-game slot if the title allows it. This preserves the outcome in case you change your mind.
- Identify the pre-choice copy. Use the slot label, folder name, and platform timestamp. Confirm that it predates the decision.
- Restore through the platform’s supported path. On cloud systems, download or select the desired copy only after checking which local data it will replace. On PC, place the preserved save folder back in the game’s expected location while the game is closed.
- Verify before continuing. Launch the game, check the character, location, quest state, and save timestamp, then make a new manual save in a different slot before progressing.
Common failure modes and fixes
The cloud timestamp is newer than the decision
The post-choice state has probably synchronized. Do not overwrite it with another save while searching. Look for the in-game slot, USB backup, or dated PC folder created before the choice. If no pre-choice copy exists, the cloud cannot recreate it.
A conflict prompt appears
Preserve local files first, then compare the cloud and local timestamps. Select deliberately; do not choose “play game” merely to dismiss the prompt. Keep the unselected copy until the restored game opens correctly.
The game has no manual-save option
Use the last automatic save that occurs before the decision, if the title exposes it, and pause or close the game before the next save event. Create a platform or file-level copy immediately after reaching that point. If the game offers no accessible save export or backup route, its autosave design may prevent a reliable rollback.

The backup is unsupported
Nintendo may explicitly report that Save Data Cloud backup is unsupported for a title. Steam Cloud is likewise limited to participating games. Treat that message as a compatibility boundary and use a supported in-game slot or another documented copy method instead of assuming the service will retain the save.
A restore would overwrite the only current copy
That is why the post-choice state must be protected first. Keep both versions under distinct names or slots, and restore only while the game is closed. Nintendo’s warning that overwritten save data cannot be recovered makes this precaution especially important.
What to keep for a second copy
For PC saves and supported PS4 console backups, a USB flash drive or portable external drive can hold dated copies. On PS4, use FAT32 or exFAT formatting and ensure the drive has at least twice the space required by the full backup file. Do not assume the same USB workflow works for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series consoles, or PS5-native saves; the cited procedures do not establish that.

A final pre-choice checklist
- Manual save or new slot created before the irreversible prompt.
- Correct game, profile, character, and slot identified.
- Platform synchronization completed and timestamp checked.
- Second copy retained on cloud, USB, external drive, or a dated PC folder as supported.
- Current pre-choice copy protected from automatic overwrite.
- After the choice, post-choice progress preserved before any rollback.
Following these checks turns an irreversible story decision into a reversible experiment: you can see the consequences while retaining a verified path back to the exact state that existed before you chose.
