Before installing a Fallout 4 update, make an untouched copy of your saves, mod files, mod-manager profile, load order, and custom configuration files. On Windows, Bethesda’s documented save location is C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves; on supported consoles, use the in-game Creations command Save Load Order to Bethesda.net. Keep the backup on a separate external drive, record exactly what was enabled, and do not overwrite it with post-update files.
What a useful Fallout 4 backup contains
Copying only the .fos save files protects your progress, but it does not preserve the environment that made those saves load correctly. A recoverable pre-update snapshot has several layers:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Save files: The characters and world states you intend to keep.
- Downloaded mod archives: The original files used to install each mod, not just the currently deployed files.
- Mod-manager profile data: Profiles, enabled/disabled states, virtual-file settings, and any profile-specific configuration.
- Plugin and load-order records: An export or text list of enabled plugins in their current order, plus screenshots if your tools do not export one.
- Custom configuration: Fallout 4 INI files, launcher settings, shader or rendering configuration, and other edits you made outside the default installation.
- A written snapshot: The game build, mod manager, date, and any notes about a character’s active mods or known warnings.
These items answer different recovery questions. A save tells you what progress existed; an archive lets you reinstall a mod; a profile restores the manager’s intended state; and a load-order record shows the sequence in which plugins were active. Preserve them together in a clearly named folder such as Fallout4-pre-update-2026-10-19, using the actual date of your backup.
Back up Fallout 4 saves on a Windows PC
1. Close the game and finish the copy from a stable state
Exit Fallout 4 completely before copying files. Also close the launcher and your mod manager so they cannot rewrite profiles or sort plugins while the backup is being made. If the game is frozen, end it and wait for disk activity to stop before proceeding. A copy made while files are changing can be incomplete.

2. Open the documented save directory
Bethesda Support gives this default Windows path:
C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves
The account name in the path will be different on your computer. In File Explorer, paste the path into the address bar and replace user.name with your Windows account name. Bethesda’s instructions are to navigate to this directory and copy the save files you want to back up; see the official PC save-backup instructions.
3. Copy every save you may need
Select the entire Saves folder unless you have a specific reason to archive only one character. Copy it to a new folder on another drive rather than moving it. Keeping all autosaves, quicksaves, manual saves, and character-specific files makes it easier to identify the last known-good state after an update. If you do select individual files, include several dated manual saves instead of relying on a single latest save.
4. Confirm that the copy is usable
Open the destination and verify that files are present and that their modified dates match the pre-update session. Do not edit or delete the original yet. If your external drive reports an error, eject it safely, reconnect it, and make a second copy before changing anything in the game installation.

Save the original mod archives
Locate the download or archive area used by your mod manager and copy the original ZIP, 7Z, or other installation packages into the backup. The deployed files inside the Fallout 4 installation are not a substitute: an update or reinstall can remove them, and an archive may contain version information or an installer structure needed to reproduce the setup. Keep the archive names intact so you can match them to your notes.

Copy the mod-manager profile
Use your manager’s own profile or instance controls to identify where it stores profiles, then copy the complete profile data to the backup. Preserve the profile that was active when you last played, not merely the manager’s default profile. Include profile-specific enabled states, overwrite or conflict data, deployment settings, and rules if the manager stores them separately. Because storage locations differ between managers and installation modes, do not assume that a folder called Mods contains the profile itself.
Export the plugin list and load order
Before the update, export a plain-text list of enabled plugins if your manager or load-order utility provides that function. If an export is unavailable, take readable screenshots of the full list and its ordering. Record whether each entry is an active plugin, a light plugin, or a resource-only mod when your tool distinguishes those categories. Store the export beside the save copy, using the same date in the filename.
Copy custom INI and launcher settings
Archive the Fallout 4 INI files you changed, including custom configuration files used by your mod setup. Also record display resolution, graphics preset, and any launcher or command-line options that matter to your installation. If you use a manager that generates profile-specific INIs, copy those generated files from the profile rather than only the global documents folder. This prevents a restoration from silently falling back to defaults.

Write a one-page pre-update record
Create a text file in the backup containing:
- Backup date and time.
- Fallout 4 build number shown by your launcher or platform.
- The mod manager and profile name.
- The last character and save you tested.
- The enabled plugin count or exported list filename.
- Any warnings, missing dependencies, or disabled mods already present.
This record gives you a reference point when an update changes the launcher, plugin list, or save visibility. It also prevents you from accidentally treating a later, partially repaired setup as the original baseline.

Save a console load order before the update
Console users cannot generally browse the Windows save directory or retain a local folder of mod archives in the same way a PC user can. For supported Creations workflows, Bethesda’s official notice says: “To avoid load order complications, please save your console load order prior to the May 27th 2026 Fallout 4 update.” The notice directs players to choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net; follow the current instructions in the Bethesda Fallout 4 Console Creations storage and load-order notice.
Console procedure
- Start Fallout 4 while the existing Creations setup is still intact.
- Open the Creations or mod-management screen and wait for your installed content and order to finish loading.
- Choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net.
- Wait for the save operation to complete, then note the date and the account or profile used.
- Capture screenshots of the visible order and enabled content as an additional record, because online behavior and menu labels can change with a platform update.
The exact archival behavior is platform- and update-dependent. Treat the Bethesda.net copy as an online load-order record, not as a guarantee that every mod archive, save, or local setting can be restored independently. If your console offers cloud-save management, ensure synchronization has completed before installing the patch, but do not delete local or cloud data to “clean up” space while troubleshooting.
Keep an independent backup copy
After creating the dated backup folder, copy it to a portable external SSD or HDD. This is a practical extension of Bethesda’s instruction to copy the files: it separates the recovery copy from the computer that will receive the update. A second cloud copy is useful when your service and storage policy support it, particularly for irreplaceable characters, but it should supplement rather than replace a local copy of large mod archives.
Use a simple layout so individual parts can be found without opening a manager:

Once the external copy is complete, open several files from it and check that the drive can read them. Eject the drive safely and leave the untouched copy disconnected while you test the updated game. Do not let a synchronization program replace the pre-update folder with newer files unless you deliberately create a separate post-update snapshot.
Control when the update installs
Automatic updates can replace the executable before you have recorded the old state. Pause automatic updates or use your platform’s delayed-update or offline option where supported. The exact controls vary by launcher and console, so verify the setting immediately before the announced release rather than assuming a previous preference still applies.
Update timing and compatibility information can change quickly. Check Bethesda announcements and the authors’ current compatibility notes immediately before installing. If a mod is known to depend on a particular game build, postpone the update until you have a verified plan, or make the backup first and test only after the external copy is safe.

| Area | Windows PC | Supported console Creations workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What you can copy locally | Save directory, downloaded mod archives, manager profiles, plugin exports, and custom INI files. | Local file access is limited; console cloud or platform save handling remains subject to the platform’s controls. |
| Load-order archival | Export a list or capture screenshots through the manager or utility you use. | Use Save Load Order to Bethesda.net when the current Creations interface supports it. |
| Restoration speed | Potentially fast after copying the folders back, provided the same manager and files are available. | Depends on Bethesda.net synchronization, platform services, storage limits, and the update’s behavior. |
| Mod-archive capacity | Can be stored on an external drive alongside saves and configuration. | Usually depends on the console’s allocated Creations storage and online availability; archive files are not exposed like PC downloads. |
| Online dependence | Local restoration can work offline once the files are archived, although activation or downloads may still require connectivity. | Load-order retrieval and Creations availability depend more heavily on account and platform services. |
This difference is why a PC backup should be a complete file snapshot, while a console backup should combine Bethesda.net load-order archival with screenshots and confirmed platform save synchronization.

Restore safely after a problematic patch
1. Preserve the post-update state first
If the patched game crashes, shows missing content, or presents an empty-looking save list, exit the game and preserve the current state before experimenting. Make a separate copy of any new saves, updated profiles, logs, or screenshots. This evidence can show which files the update changed and gives you a way back if a repair attempt makes the situation worse.
2. Separate game-version problems from file-loss problems
Confirm the installed game build and whether the launcher or platform has enabled, disabled, or reordered content. A save that was made with a newer executable or a different plugin set may not be safe to open with an older setup. Do not repeatedly load and resave a character while plugins are missing; that can turn a temporary visibility problem into a changed save.
3. Restore the PC profile and files as a unit
- Close Fallout 4, the launcher, and the mod manager.
- Rename the current saves, profile, and configuration folders instead of deleting them; include the update date in the names.
- Copy the untouched pre-update profile, load-order export, custom INI files, and mod archives back to their corresponding locations.
- Restore the backed-up
Savesfolder to the Windows path documented by Bethesda. - Reinstall or redeploy the archived mods using the recorded profile and load order.
- Start the manager, verify that the expected plugins are enabled and ordered correctly, and only then launch the game.
Keep the restored files on the same game build for which they were captured whenever possible. If the patch cannot be rolled back, use the backup to identify the previously working mod set and wait for compatible versions rather than forcing every old plugin into the new executable.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Check for saves that only appear to be missing
Bethesda notes that modded saves can appear missing. Their support guidance recommends checking profiles and viewing all saves; use the steps in Bethesda’s missing-modded-saves article before concluding that the files are gone. On PC, confirm that the manager is using the profile whose saves you backed up and that the restored files are in the expected Documents path. On console, verify the signed-in account and synchronization status before changing storage data.
5. Test with a copy, not your only original
Load a backed-up manual save first and inspect the character, inventory, settlement, and known mod-dependent areas. If it works, make a new test save under a clearly different name. Keep the original pre-update files untouched until the test session is stable; that gives you another recovery point if a delayed crash or missing dependency appears.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Only copying the newest save: Restore from an earlier manual save if the newest file was created after a failed update. Archive the whole save folder before patching.
- Saving a load order without the files: A plugin list cannot recreate an unavailable archive. Keep the downloaded mod packages and profile with the export.
- Overwriting the backup during troubleshooting: Use a new folder for every post-update attempt and keep the dated baseline read-only or disconnected.
- Forgetting custom INIs: A restored plugin set can still behave differently when configuration files revert to defaults. Include profile-specific and global INIs that you changed.
- Launching with missing plugins: Stop at the warning screen, close the game, and restore the recorded profile and dependencies before saving.
- Assuming console archival is permanent: Confirm that the Bethesda.net load-order save completed and retain screenshots; service behavior can depend on the platform and update.
- Updating before checking announcements: Compatibility information can change on release day. Delay installation when your platform allows it and read the latest Bethesda and mod-author notices first.
Final pre-update checklist
- Fallout 4 and the mod manager are closed.
- The complete Windows
Savesfolder is copied, or console saves are synchronized through the platform. - Downloaded mod archives are present in the backup.
- The active manager profile and enabled-plugin order are exported or captured.
- Custom INI files and launcher settings are included.
- The game build, manager, profile, date, and known warnings are written down.
- A second copy exists on an external drive, with an optional cloud copy.
- Automatic updating is paused or otherwise controlled where supported.
- The untouched backup is disconnected or protected from overwrite.
