Before updating a mod or the game, make separate backups of your Fallout 4 save files and mod-manager profile on PC. On console, use the in-game Creations load-order archive when the relevant update notice calls for it. A save backup protects the copy of the file; it does not guarantee that a save will remain compatible if you change or remove mods.
What to back up—and which steps apply to your platform

These instructions are specifically for Fallout 4. PC save-file copying and console load-order archiving are different workflows, and a backup of one does not preserve the other.

Back up Fallout 4 saves on PC
Bethesda Support recommends backing up Fallout 4 saves before installing a new mod. Its stated default folder is C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves. The user-folder name and Windows document location vary, so verify the active path on your PC rather than assuming this exact example is yours.

- Find the active save folder. Check the stated default location, and confirm any profile or changed Windows folder settings that could redirect saves.
- Check for modded saves if a character seems missing. Bethesda explains that modded and non-modded saves may appear in separate profiles. From the game’s load menu, switch profiles or view all saves on the machine. See Bethesda’s explanation of where modded saves appear.
- Copy the relevant save files. Bethesda suggests creating a
Save backupsfolder insideSavesand copying the files there. For an additional copy away from the PC, you can also copy that folder to separate storage; Bethesda does not prescribe a particular device or capacity. - Leave the backup unchanged while testing. To restore a copied save, move it back into its home directory, as Bethesda’s instructions describe.
Preserve the PC mod list and profile too
Save files alone cannot record every part of a modded setup. Keep the manager and profile name with the backup, and use that manager’s current instructions to preserve its profile and configuration. Manager data is not interchangeable with a copy of the game’s saves folder.

Mod Organizer 2
The Mod Organizer 2 project’s profile description identifies profile-specific enabled mods and installation order, enabled plugins and plugin load order, a copy of the game INI, and an optional save-game filter. Back up the profile data using instructions for the version you use; this source describes what a profile can contain, not a single universal backup path.
Downloaded archives and a setup note
- If you want to avoid downloading files again, include your downloaded mod archives in your backup. Folder locations vary by manager, and the sources cited here do not establish one archive folder that covers all managers.
- Make a dated note of the Fallout 4 version, manager and profile name, and essential dependencies. The note can help identify the setup later, but it cannot recreate missing files or configuration by itself.
Archive a console load order through Creations
Bethesda’s November 21, 2025 notice about a specific Fallout 4 console update described a load-order reset associated with the May 27, 2026 update. For that update, the notice gave this route:

- Select Load Order Archive.
- Choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net and confirm.
- Wait for the success message and data-file reload before leaving the menu.
The notice said console players with saves older than November 10, 2025 were expected to be impacted, and also said a fresh save for an ongoing playthrough could preserve the load order. Those dates and directions belong to that notice and update, not to every future patch. Before another update, check its current notice and the options actually shown in your game menu.
What a backup can—and cannot—recover
A separate copy gives you a way to restore the files or load-order record that you preserved. It does not establish that a save remains compatible after mods are updated, removed, or reordered. Bethesda’s cited pages do not quantify mod-related save failures or guarantee a successful recovery for every setup, so keep the untouched backup as a fallback rather than treating it as proof that a changed playthrough will load correctly.
