To play downloaded PC games without an internet connection, keep more than the game folder: preserve the storefront’s backup or installer files, any required launcher and redistributables, downloadable content, and save data. Store those files on a separate external drive, then test every title while disconnected before you rely on it. Offline behavior is title-specific; an apparently complete copy can still fail because of an external launcher, third-party DRM, a pending update, or an online-only service.
What an offline-ready backup actually contains
A reliable backup has four parts. First are the game’s executable files and data. Second are the files needed to reinstall it, such as a storefront backup set, an offline installer, patches, and downloadable content. Third are dependencies: the launcher, account information, runtime packages, or publisher components the title expects. Fourth is your save data, kept separately so a damaged installation or a cloud conflict cannot erase your progress.

Storefronts do not provide the same kind of offline ownership. A self-contained installer can be copied to a replacement computer and run later. A client-managed installation may require the original launcher and an account even when the game itself is already on the disk. Some games also contact an external launcher or DRM service during startup. Treat each title as its own offline project rather than assuming one backup method works for the entire library.
- Game files: the installed directory or the files produced by an installer.
- Install media: every installer part, patch, and DLC package required for the version you intend to use.
- Launch requirements: storefront client, publisher launcher, activation details, and any documented third-party component.
- Save data: local saves and a separate copy of cloud-synchronized saves when available.
- Documentation: a text file recording storefront, version or download date, DLC, and launcher requirements.
Storefront differences at a glance
The following comparison describes the documented workflows, not a guarantee for every game. A title can impose stricter requirements than its storefront.

Step 1: Inventory every game before copying anything
Create a simple inventory in a spreadsheet or text file. Record the game name, storefront, installed version or download date, DLC, save location, and whether a separate publisher launcher appears at startup. Mark titles that are multiplayer-only, require an active connection, or display an activation prompt. Those entries need a different plan or may not be suitable for offline play at all.
Identify the storefront path
Separate Steam, GOG, Epic, and publisher-launcher titles into different folders on the backup drive. Do not merge files from different storefronts just because the game name is the same. Installation metadata, entitlements, and update channels can be incompatible.
Look for external dependencies
Start each game while online and note every window that appears before the main menu. An external launcher, one-time activation, or mandatory update is a warning that a raw directory copy may not be sufficient. Steam’s documentation specifically excludes many games that use third-party installers or downloaders from its Backup feature, and Steam Offline Mode excludes games requiring an active connection or external launcher.

Step 2: Create a platform-appropriate backup
Steam: use the built-in Backup feature where supported
- Connect the external drive and make a folder for the title, including its version or date.
- In the Steam client, open the Backup and Restore Games function and choose the installed title for backup.
- Write the resulting backup files to the title’s folder. Keep all parts together; do not rename individual files in a way that could break the restore process.
- Copy the game’s local save data to a separate
Savesfolder beside the Steam backup. - While still connected to the internet, launch the game and confirm that no installation or update prompt remains. Then enable or verify Steam Offline Mode and test the title after disconnecting.
Steam states that its Backup feature saves copies of game files and restores them from backup copies, but it also warns that many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with that feature. For those titles, preserve the original installer or publisher launcher process as well, and do not represent the Steam backup alone as a complete offline solution.
GOG: download every offline installer part
- Open the game’s account page and choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.
- Download every setup file listed for the game, including language packs, patches, and DLC that you plan to use.
- Place all parts in one folder named with the game and download date. Keep the files together; a missing part can prevent installation.
- Copy local saves separately and add a text note describing the intended installation order if patches are listed separately.
- On a test computer or a temporary folder, run the installer set while online, then disconnect and start the installed game executable.
GOG’s developer documentation says offline backup installers are generated automatically on its servers after a build is published to the Master branch. That page is dated 2021, so its statement about a queue that can delay availability by several hours is process documentation, not a promise that every current release will appear on a fixed schedule. If an installer is not visible immediately after a release, wait for it to become available before deleting the installed copy.
Epic Games Store: retain the installed game and launcher state
- Keep the installed game directory and the Epic Games Launcher installation available on the backup drive or in your recovery plan.
- While online, open the title through the launcher and verify that it reaches its menu without requiring an update or sign-in action that cannot be completed offline.
- Check whether the game is supported by Epic Offline Mode. Epic says Offline Mode is for supported single-player games already installed.
- Copy local saves separately. Do not treat cloud saves as an offline copy.
- Disconnect the network and launch the title through the launcher. Record the result in your inventory.
Epic says Offline Mode is enabled automatically when the device loses internet or the launcher starts offline. The mode does not provide online multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, or other online services, and it does not make an unsupported title launchable.
Step 3: Back up saves as a separate set
Installation files and progress files fail in different ways, so use separate folders and, if possible, separate backup dates. A practical layout is:

Steam Cloud is useful when connected but is not a substitute for a local save backup. Steam warns that Offline Mode delays synchronization. If you play on two computers and reconnect them later, the local and cloud versions can differ; accepting the wrong version can overwrite the progress you intended to keep. Before reconnecting, identify which machine contains the newest intentional save.
Step 4: Store the backup on external media
Use an external USB SSD or hard drive with enough free space for the largest installer set, patches, DLC, and save copies. The drive is a storage location, not a guarantee against failure: keep a second copy in another location when the library matters. The platform documentation establishes the value of backup copies but does not prescribe a particular drive brand, capacity, or redundancy scheme.

- Do not delete the original download until a disconnected installation or launch test succeeds.
Step 5: Perform a real offline launch test

- While online, launch the game and reach its main menu. Complete any first-run installation, runtime setup, or update.
- Exit normally so save data is written.
- Disconnect Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, or use the operating system’s network controls to disable every connection.
- Start the storefront client in its offline state, then launch the game.
- Load a save, create a small test save, and exit. Confirm that the game remains usable without network services.
- Reconnect only after recording the result and copying the test save if it is valuable.
Steam explicitly recommends launching the games you want to use offline and verifying that no further update or installation requirement remains. Epic’s restriction to supported, already-installed titles makes this test especially important for that storefront.

Steam restore
Install the Steam client, sign in when you have connectivity, and use its Backup and Restore Games function to point to the backup set. Restore the game, place the separately backed-up saves in the correct user-data location, and start the title online once to complete any required setup. Test Offline Mode before taking the computer away from the network. If the title invokes a third-party installer or launcher, follow that component’s activation and installation steps; a successful Steam restore does not override those requirements.
GOG restore
Copy the complete installer set to the replacement PC, run the setup files in the documented order, install the patches and DLC you saved, and then copy the saves into their game-specific location. Start the executable while connected if the title requires first-run configuration, then disconnect and repeat the launch test.

Epic restore
Install the Epic Games Launcher, restore or reinstall the game, and sign in while online so the launcher can establish its normal state. Verify Offline Mode eligibility, copy local saves, and perform the disconnected test. Do not expect cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer, or other online services to operate without a connection.

Troubleshooting an offline failure
The launcher demands an update
Reconnect, let the update finish, launch the game once, and repeat the offline test. If the game requires an active connection every time, it is not an offline-capable title under the documented storefront rules.
The game opens a second launcher
Identify that launcher in your notes and preserve its installation and account requirements. Steam specifically warns that third-party installers and downloaders can defeat its Backup feature; a copied game directory alone is not a fix.
The installer reports a missing file
Compare the backup folder with the original download, restore all numbered installer parts, and copy any listed language pack, patch, or DLC. Do not rename parts casually or delete the original until a complete installation succeeds.
The wrong save appears after reconnecting
Stop launching the game on multiple computers. Preserve both local and cloud versions, determine which contains the newest intentional progress, and then resolve the synchronization prompt in favor of that copy. Steam warns that unsynchronized changes can create conflicts and risk lost progress.
The game launches but online features are missing
This is expected for services that require a connection. Epic lists online multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online services as unavailable in Offline Mode. A successful menu launch does not imply that network-dependent features will function.
Maintain the library over time
Whenever you install a major patch, add DLC, or change storefront, create a new dated backup rather than silently overwriting the old one. Update the note beside the files and repeat the disconnected test. Keep at least one known-good version until the replacement has passed both installation and launch checks. This versioned approach lets you recover from a broken update without confusing an older save with a newer game build.
Finally, review the inventory periodically. Storefront policies, launcher behavior, and title support can change, and the cited platform pages do not establish a universal “works forever offline” guarantee. Your own recorded test, together with complete installers, documented dependencies, and independent save copies, is the strongest evidence that a particular game is ready for offline play.
